Dunno what Cielito is, but Lindo means beautiful, describing Cielito.

(Usually the suffix "ito" means a diminitive of a verb, in this case, something like cielir. So someone is performing the action of something and being beautiful while doing it. :)

Sorry that my year of Spanish in high school isn't up the task. ;-)

I thought 'ito' meant little. Ok, you Texans, can you translate for us?

GL: Yep, ito means little. I just said it in a fancy way. :)

Don't know what Cielito translates into, but I'm pretty sure Lindo is Pretty.

Oh, there's a site where you can look things like this up. I think I have it in my favorites.

Yep, here it is

Cielo in Italian is sky, cielito in spanish would be little sky... How's that for logic?

So then it obviously means: pretty little ciel. :-)
P. S. What's a ciel?

Little sky? Perhaps it's supposed to mean that the flower represents a small portion of the big blue sky.

And, judging by the beautiful shot mark posted, the flower is well named.

There is an old Spanish song, 'Cielito Lindo' that says "Ai, ai, ai ai, canta y no llores", roughly translated as "oh no! sing and don't cry" Used to sing it in HS Spanish class. Stop laughing at me :)

Around here, Cielito Lindo translates pretty close to the word sweetheart. "Mi cielo" means "my lover".

Literally means "Beautiful little sky".

Yes, the ending "ito" in any spanish word, denotes affection, love, care and tenderness, also little.
Cielo means sky but also heaven; so in this case the nuances of the wording is for "beautiful little sky" because when you look at the flower it occupied all the visual scope of your vision.

Muy Bien, Cristina. Gracias.
Now that's the extent of my Spanish.

P. S. The first part of our word 'ceiling' is similar to ciel :: interesting.

Google just added a translation page to their site: http://www.google.com/language_tools?q=%22Benjamin+Thompson%22&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8

It's in beta form now, but it's pretty slick, like most everything Google offers. :)

Thanks cristina, I think the reference to the sky is probably what was more in mind with the flower. I only know only a bit of tex-mex spanish, most of it slang, but it's a neat thought that "mi cielo" which I think of as meaning "my lover" could also mean "my heaven". Hmm... maybe my high school boyfriends were more enamored of me that I thought they were, LOL!

Mark, when I discussed this with family , they agreed that the proper meaning is "cielito lindo = (my) beautiful little heaven".

So, I can say that all in DG are my "cielitos lindos",
the s is for plural.

Love to all !
