poppies for Dave

These are the poppies that were in bud form when you saw them. Shall I save some seeds for you???

Wow, those are just awesome. Definitely save some seed for me - that'd be great! (I'm looking around my desk for seeds you might want. ) :)

I just love these, you simply cant beat a red poppy with this kind of magnificence, can you? ohhh well, let's see now, maybe a red brugmansia with this intense red???

A B. sanguinea, eh? :) Mine is about 5 feet tall and no sign of blooms... yet.

I can't wait to grow those red poppies myself. C'mon Spring 2003. :)

Dave, I will send you seeds as soon as they are ready - still a month away at least.....the worst part is that these lovely poppies look pretty scraggly when waiting for the seeds to set, and wouldnt you know it, right smack dab out front......

Don't the petals fall off and reveal the blue seed pod? I think poppy seed pods are beautiful and at least as interesting as the blooms themselves.

You're right, the pods look cool, but foliage looks [deleted]. And arent these the pods that are prized for dried flower arrangements? I think so...

Yep Trish dries dozens of them.

Regarding bad foliage... they can't be as bad as the oriental poppies, which truly are downright ugly at this time of year.

Dave, I cut the oriental poppy foliage to the ground when it starts to look ugly. No sign of plant deterioration after 3 years of doing so, either; can't be bad. Better than looking at the ugly hairy leaves slowly dying...

Dave, after she gets the seeds right?

Last year, we had so many poppies (actually, that you gave us, pebble), that I was in absolutely no danger of a poppy seed deficit :) As soon as the little head opens up, I shake out a bunch of seeds, then hang them upside down to dry. A year later, I can still shake those dried seed pods, and seeds will come out. It never fails to amaze me how many seeds come from just one poppy flower.

Those are incredible, Pebble! I'm very excited to add them to our gardens next year! Thanks for thinking of us!!

My pleasure Trish, I always enjoy sharing my favorite flower seeds with my favorite people....

I might just dry some and use them as decorations myself. did you let them get brown before hanging them upside down?

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

I've done it both ways, and they came out equally fine. Generally, they dry more on the stem before I pick them, but not because of the drying- just because I usually don't get around to it until the very last possible minute :)
