A Rose by What Name?

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Because of the sheer number of different plants being bred, naming new varieties has become a major challenger. "Already there are about 100,000 day lilies with names," says The Wall Street Journal, " at least that many roses and more than 14,000 dahlias. All the obvious poetic nouns and adjectives, such as beauty, blush, delight, dream, glory, queen, sunrise, sunset, velvet, fragrant, delight and magic, have been appropriated - and registered -in virtualy every possible combination. Today, plant names are being driven to new heights -and depths - of commercial nomenclature. " For example, "at gardening stores these days,"says the Journal, "you can buy a Taco Supreme iris, a Macho Man rose, an Abba Dabba Do hosta, a Primal Scream day lily or Kung Fu dahlia. " You can even have flower named after yourself - for a price. A compnay in California allows you to name a rose for $10,000, providing the name is in good taste. Another charge $75,000 but throws in a few extras, including a weekend in Los Angeles.

Thanks, I believe I shall pass on the ego trip and just settle for ditch lilies and wildflowers. If I did have that kind of dough, I would spend it making more plants and gardens, not on immortalizing myself. I can hear it now, "that Aimée lily sure looks puny today. Looks like she might have a bug. And look at the Aimée iris, it's just not very tall compared to the others, is it? Oh, and I have been meaning to feed the Aimée rose for some time, it's really becoming an underachiever."

At least with some of the uncommon names I tend to remember better what I bought if I lose the tag.
No way would I need a flower of any kind named after me.
