Soap Bar?

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

What kind you like to use? I love smell soap is Zest > scent is "Rush" and Irish Spring > scent is "Sports" both is New come out, loves it... it take last longer smell good all day and all night.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

We use 'Whitewater Fresh' Zest because DH and DS favor that, but I sometimes buy Safeguard because I love the smell it leaves in the bathroom! When I feel like treating myself to my own special bar of soap, I'll buy a bar of Caress. I LOVE THAT ONE!!! LOL I don't get it often though, because I think it's a waste to buy a bar of soap just for me, and it's too flowery smelling to suit the guys here.

I just realized that I'm bummed that the girls all grew up and moved out. Now I'm the only one who likes the flowery smelly stuff so I don't get it anymore.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Joan, it's just a bar of soap. Treat yourself!!!! I like cocoa butter soap, my skin is dry as an alligator.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

You're right tiG, I think I'll put that on my shopping list just for me. :)

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I use English Lavender. I love that one.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I like Dove.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I love the soap "fa" it used to be available here in the US, this is the soap that I used in Turkey, and I can smell it and instantly it takes me back to my childhood. I think it might be a european bran. it used to always be just green, then there came a blue one and a pink one which I have seen in the US.
Another soap is the pure olive soap famous in turkey, it is an olive green bar, and it is simply called "green" soap, this is the purest of all soaps, and can be used to wash your skin, hair, clothes dishes etc.,

Dove...bc DH has skin problems and is allergic to everything else. I keep a stash of Calgon take me away types when I want something different. I love anything with a lavendar fragrance too.

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

I am allergic to almost all soap, can only use pure glycerine with herbs for general bathing.

The best for cleaning my hands after a wonderful day out in the garden is from Russia. No clue what it is, my nieces gave me about 10 huge bars last Christmas, does a magnificent job getting every last speck of grime off in one easy swipe.

My only concern is, when it is gone, how will I get more?

Hi everyone,

Haven't posted in a while, but I just have to comment on soap. I love fruit scented soaps. Crabtree and Evelyn Lemon Glycerine is my favorite, but they've discontinued it. I bought 16 bars just before they stopped selling it and will be quite sad when it runs out. Trying to find a new favorite isn't going to be easy.

Their Patchouli smells great, too.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

tiG, where do you find cocoa butter soap? I'd have a contest with you on dry skin. And, Pebble, do you know who makes "fa"? I'd like to try that one, too. I've been using mostly Dove myself, but always looking for something to help my dry skin ESPECIALLY in winter!!!

This is a little pricey, but since I wash my hands all the time, I started putting the Dove liquid soap as refills in my pump soap dispensers. It's much better for my hands than what is actually sold in those containers. I think the liquid hand soap is focused on germ killing which kills my skin!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

A great place to find botanical soaps at decent prices is drugstore.com at http://www.drugstore.com Right now they have a special going on, with free shipping on your first non-prescription order of $10 or more. I found Avalon Organic Botanicals shampoos and conditioners for the same price as they're available for locally, only I got free shipping and no tax. If you don't have a lot of sources for organic and various toiletries, this place has a good selection, good service and decent prices. :)

Homemade lye soap.

Morph, here has good Cocoa Butter soap smell good also.

Pioneer, CA

I use Chandrika soap from India. A shop here was going out of business and we bought all they had and now it's almost gone. I've found it on the web and have to order some, it is so nice! Made from vegetable oils with no animal products at all.The fragrance is "herby" and it makes you feel so clean and fresh.( I sound like a commercial) It must be something like the ones Pebble is talking about.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

the "green soap" from turkey was very very cheap, maybe like 5-10 cents a bar, I'm sure it still is. It is a huge bar, and it is pure soap and olive oil or olive extracts, Turkey is really big into the production of olive oil, and i think this is a byproduct.....and it literally is used for everything.
I dont remember the manufacturer of FA, i think it was a european brand, but once I found them at Target, and they were on clearence....so I bought all that I could afford at the time, they might still carry it, havent checked in a while.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Since I have dry skin and am sensitive to the heavy fragrances in most soaps, I switched to gels a number of years ago. But the manufacturers keep changing them, so what was nice last month might be horrid the next time I buy it. The stores here stopped carrying the last one I liked when a new line came out, so I went to drugstore.com and found a supply. Like Pebble, I bought all I could afford at the time. And I was wary of how it might change if I stored a lot of it. I think I have two tubes left, and then I will have to start searching and experimenting all over again. If I could afford it, I would just use Shalimar Bath Gel, followed by Shalimar Body Lotion and topped off with a spritz of Shalimar Perfume, bought in Europe since it's not as diluted as the ones reblended in New York. I was formerly able to substitute Coty Emeraude and be satisfied, but that has changed. Chanel 22 is non-existent, I guess, as I never find it anymore, but it was delicious in a bath oil. I have just as much trouble with laundry soap, the smells are disgusting, strong and pushy, green, cheap.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Aimee, you remind me of myself...although, do you know how strong the scent would be layering the gel, lotion and then european blended perfume.....wowo.......
I have been wearing Chanel's newest perfume "Allure" hubby got me perfume and lotion for mother's day, so I feel i have to wear it. I prefer este's "white linen" in the summer as it is so light an breezy smelling. When I lived in Turkey where it is soooo hot, I used to keep my perfume in the fridge, and spritz on me in the hottest part of the day...oh wow - talk about going to heaven....In the winter I wear Joy, but I find it too strong for summer.

Aimee, I hope you find a soap that will work for you. I have some here that my MIL brought back from Turkey, I asked for the Old green soap...she brought the "new and improved" green soap that has been altered, it is in a glycerin base. also, she brough some chamomile soap....in a glycerine base. I will send them to you to try out...

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Pebble, I would hate to take your soap, since I have such lousy luck with soaps anyway. It's a long way to Turkey for more! There is a little business about 20 miles from me that makes soap, and they have a lot of the glycerine based ones. I used some several years ago, and actually don't remember why I stopped. This is a young family business, and they made some of those fancy clear and white bars for Elizabeth Arden. I was fortunate to get to be in their test marketing, using those bars that later sold for about $14. I think most people think that soap is imported, but it is really subbed out to numerous small manufacturers scattered all over the country. But it must not have been impressive stuff, as I never felt tempted to use the freebie certificates they gave with the test bars. BTW, when I use the bath oil, lotion and perfume, I don't put it all on at once. The oil is soothing and full bodied for several hours. I find the lotion goes away fairly soon, but feels sooooo nice. The perfume is just about right for a light spritz right after lunch, when the oil is quite weakened. Shalimar is so delicate anyway, which is why I like it. Well, one reason. It's my summer favorite of what is available, and I like Balenciaga LeDix for winter, but never found a wide enough range of products, and I have to order the stuff from a NY broker. Mexico has a lot of good perfumes that haven't been diluted to death, but I never found LeDix there. Don't you hate being so far away from the things you love to use? I often read your posts and think of all you must miss.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I would like to try it if can... if not it is ok no problem at all. =)

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Aimee, for some reason I havent used these soaps, they have been sitting here for at least a year...
When I was in Mexico, I bought perfumes for myself and hubby, I thought it was quite a buy. When I use to travel a lot, I would buy my perfumes in Hong kong, but since I havent been traveling for a year or so, I just buy locally. Aimee, try keepin a bottle of perfume in the fridge and pritz yourself in the heat of the day, I know you live in Texas where the heat is intense....
There are many things that I miss from Turkey, some of the oddest things though...Like pickles from street vendors, sold by the glass and you get pickle juice, and that is the best part, you drink the pickle juice then eat the pickle. It is ice cold....It isnt at all like american pickles though. Very refreshing on a hot day also. When I was in junior high, there was a cholera outbreak in turkey and at school for vegetable we were served pickled veggies (somthing about pickles preventing cholera? maybe the process of pickling kills microbes??) anyway, I love any kind of pickled vegetable, but here the picling process is so different, rather the ingredients...we dont use dill, and never sugar.
but thi is the basic ingredients for pickle: water, lemon, garlic, vinegar, salt, garbanzo beanz (to ferment) then the vegetables, we like, cabbage, carrots, green tomatoes, cukes of course, cauliflower, eggplant, and many more.
did I go off on a tangent or what?????
sorry

Well,I usually don't use bar soap but when I do,I use Nuetrigina bar soap, other wise I use the Moisturizing Bath and Shower Gels. Right now I'm using the vanilla scent by Spa Therapies.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Camay...........all the way, baby!!!

"eyes"

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

If you aren't going to use them, I accept with thanks! I will send the postage, email me about what it will be. Yes, the perfumes in Mexico are way cheaper than the department stores here, and they are still sealed from their home country instead of reblended. But there is less variety, as they usually only carry what will sell fast. I used to go there several times a year to pick up things like that, but haven't been for a number of years. I bought one medicine I used a lot for my stomach, at a tenth of the US price, and it was twice as strong so I only used one tablet instead of two. But I have learned that the strength isn't always consistent, so I don't buy drugs there anymore. If you know of specific things you would buy there, let me know and I can have friends get it. There are a number of Mexican people who go about every other month and will bring what I ask for if it's available.

I was only in the Middle East a short time, but in Iran I ate some potato chips that spoiled me forever. I never liked them here, but those were almost sweet, and so crispy. And the pastries and cakes there, oh, my! Never got to Turkey, dang it!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Iran was quite a modern country during the Shah's reign, and actually a hot spot for jet setters. it's a shame what has happend there.

I did buy some drugs in Mexico, as I recall I bought some Retin-a for a friend..I can't think of anything off hand.
I also go to canada to buy aspirin with codeine in it about once every 2 years.
Drugs cost so much less inother countries.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I was in Iran just before the Shah fled, and it was indeed humming. I can't bear to think of the people who were so kind to this American woman and the fate some of them met. I was in Baghdad a couple of years later, and it was not at all the same. I liked both countries as far as the topography, and was fascinated by the antiquity all around me, but the politics are so unfortunate. Since I didn't speak either Arabic or Farsi, I had to depend on my driver to communicate, and you would have laughed your buns off to see me trying to gather supplies to make cookies. I had to get vanilla from a pharmacist. Took me two days to figure it out.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Aimee, what were you doing over there?
I know that vanilla is sold as a powder in turkey, was it the same in Iran? and they say the flavor is more intense.
Oh - I did buy vanilla in Mexico too. the pure stuff.

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

Pebble: Fa is a German soap brand, but it is now a subsidiary to the big great chemical God in the sky called ICI.

We use Nivea soap, cos it's not to perfumy, but the main reason is that it gets you clean.... easy peasy ;-)

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, Pebble, I was going to save the women of the Middle East! I was in medical records, and the Shah was in the process of setting up a national health system, which would have been such an improvement for women since they hadn't even been officially acknowledged at birth in the past. A number of companies with international interests had become involved, and were sponsoring "sample" trips for potential staff. But when I went to Iraq, it was actually just because I had a connection and could, and I was curious. Much water under the bridges between the two trips. Obviously, my trip to Iran was cut short by the unrest that ended with the cinema and other businesses being bombed in Abadan and Khorramshahr, the airport being closed and our embassy seized, hostages taken, all that mess. All that we were hoping to build was destroyed.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

It is a shame isnt it Aimee? Did you by any chance see the tv special about IRAQ's internal war, rather they were using chemichal weapons on their own people? (mostly kurds) entire villages that were wiped out, and the people that werent wiped out were pathetic. what a tragedy, that is what scares me about that lunatic over there, he doesnt mind killing his own people, women, children - they are all the same to him, and maiming them to such a degree....he will stop at nothing for the rest of the world. he is one lunatic we should be afraid of. he is worse than hitler. you mark my words, when all is said and done, his name will be said in the same way as hitler's name is said.
The main person doing the show was a british doctor, and she was appalled. and so was I

Wintermoor, I thought it might have been German. I love that smell...

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, Pebble, I don't think I could have watched that show. I feel so helpless and frustrated. Yet, in Iran and Iraq both, the women were often hotly defensive of the very practices that keep them in a second class or worse position. I guess it reminds me of an old saying I heard long ago. The worm in a rotten apple thinks it's the sweetest place in the world, because it's all he has ever known. And they are told that we have a worse lifestyle, that the homes and things seen in movies or on tv aren't really for the people but are props for propaganda. When I saw the mud huts and pathetic conditions, I wondered how a person could want to keep his people in such dire need.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Aimee, it is indeed sad to know what conditions these people live in. They were defensive because of their ignorance, and they felt threatened of their way of life which is all they knew, and could not even fathom a better world.....
It is just a shame!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Wow lot here and enjoy to read all of you post here so intresting something new to me about the Soap. =)

Pioneer, CA

Have any of you tried Emu soap? It is a bit pricey, but it's good and I doubt that if you have allergies it would hurt you at all. I use it for face soap because it's so mild, and I can't use any soap or cosmetic that isn't pure because I have porphoria.

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

THE BAR SOAP WE USE IS LEVER, AND LAVA FOR DH. I USE THE SOFT SOAP DISPENSERS. AT X-MAS I GET ALL KINDS OF GOOD SMELLING TOILETRIES, AND IT TAKES ME ALL YEAR TO USE THEM UP, SO I HARDLY EVER BUY ANY MYSELF.I SOMETIMES PUT ESSENTIAL OIL ,(A DROP OR TWO) IN MY DISPENSER TO OVERIDE SOMETHING I'M NOT FOND OF. I LIKE THE FLORALS,JASMINE,HONEYSUCKLE,LAVENDER,LILAC,ROSE,GARDINIA,MIXED BOUQUETS.
