My major experience has been in trading plants, can that be done here and would it be a separate site? I have spiderwort and others that are waiting to go elsewhere after the 3 foot of snow melts. Marcia
What about trading plants?
Plant trades are very welcome here. Use the "Trading" forum.
Most traders here deal in seeds, I know that there are some who like trading plants. When you post your message, make sure to be clear when you specify that you want to trade plants - not seeds.

Marcia, I traded plants at gardenweb.com. I mailed out some ajuga and some Black-eyed Stella daylillies. I also recently got some purple oxalis bulbs. I have also received brugmansia cuttings which puts you on teh road to blooms a year faster than just seeds..Good luck
Hi Marcia,
You're talking my talk, now! Check out my will-have list. These will be small divisions, for trade. I love trading plants!
Kim, have a look! Whatcha got??

I have a question. How do you mail plants?
Jan
Marcia,
I'm a plant-trade person too. Not much into seeds yet, though I suspect I soon will be.
Jan,
Depends on the plant. Mostly, it's best to wash off all or most of the soil from the rootball, wrap the rootball in papertowels or newspaper (keeping the newspaper - which I prefer using - moist). Then enclose the newspaper-wrapped portion in plastic. Plastic baggies work great. I usually secure the plastic baggie with a rubberband or with twine. Just so it's water-tight and doesn't leak all over the package. Lastly, write the name of the plant on a note or on a plant label, stick it in the box, slap the address on the outside of the box and, if I may be ethnic vocabulary-wise, "schlep" it to the Post office and you're done.
Have fun!
Mike
Plants! Yippee! Count me in! I have some (like my oriental wisteria) that will not bloom from seeds. (go figure) but cuttings work great. And I get lots of requests for them every spring. So cuttings are the only successful way of passing on my wisteria.
And houseplants?? I have no more room... so Id love to trade anyone looking for houeplants... for some outdoor vibrant perennials/shrubs/trees.
Maybe a dumb question but how does the shipping(costs)work on sending plants?I'd love to get in on this but have been a little scared to try.Daisylou:)
Daisylou,
You just put your plants in the box and ship them. Whatever the post office makes you pay, you pay. A good way to avoid high cost is not to send soil with your plant roots, or ver little. If you do shake off the soil, it is important to wrap the roots with moist paper towels or newspaper and then stick it in a plastic bag to prevent leakage.
Have fun!
Mike
daisylou, most people ship plants by priority mail, the boxes are free at the p.o. The rate is now $3.50 for up to 1lb.; $3.95 for 2lbs. Here's a link to the USPS. Hope this helps.

I too luv to trade plants-its such a jump start in your garden. Packing depends mainly on the plant-sometimes i send more soil with a plant that doesnt like its roots disturbed. I wrap the roots in damp paper towel or newspaper. Wrap it in a saran wrap and duct tape it shut!
then i like to enclose it in a couple plastic grocery bags or wrap it in newspaper-especially in the cold months.
I have recieved plants with popscicle sticks with plants name taped to them-VERY nice. I like to send mine 2-3day priority,so that the plant is not in the mailstream long!
Bulbs and tubers can go cheaper routes!
Im going to have to get a list started of plants for spring trades! Hope to trade with everyone soon!
