Bananas: Banana pups

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I have pups on both of my bananas. On the one, the pup is at least 6" from the main trunk, but not on the other, it's much closer. I'd love to share these if it's possible to take them out now without hurting my plant. So is it possible?

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Tig, from all I've heard and read, I think that is how they are divided. If you do manage to divide it and are going to put it on the trading block, keep me in mind - ok? unless you've already earmarked it for someone else...

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

no, sweetie, haven't got them down for anyone, just know that someone could be enjoying one like I am. I'll put you down, red or green?

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

hmmm red would be a good accent color.....
thank you - let me know when you're ready.

tIG .... Use a flat spade and slide it directly down the side of the trunk between the pup and the trunk then carefully dig up the pup..the main trunk will recover quickly...let the pup dry a little for a couple of days then water as usual. Works for me. :-)

thanks much Kyle!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

do you have red left for me? LMK

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

mini, i only had one red, but this fall may have more. remind me in sept. and i'll see.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Sure tig.. no problem.. :)

woohoo tig
i just planted mine in the yard yesterday and saw that shoots were forming already and it is only about 2 feet tall

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

okay, are all shoots besides the main trunk pups? the ones on my red are sooooooo close, I'm just terrified to try anything, I'm afraid of damaging it. these things really do grow as fast as people say. lots of food and water, that's all there is to it.

tig,oh tig.......keep me in mind as well if you would please.
I will pay you for green one now and maybe a red later????
Please,pretty please,with bananna on top.

Hey tiG... do you rember the name of the banana. that we bought at earls I am thinking its a dwarf but not sure

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

no that one, and he didn't have a name for his, just yellow dwarf. Mine is only a foot or so tall, I guess it's really a dwarf!!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

How often are they supposed to be fed? I bought the fertilizer for bananas and it just came in a plastic bag with no information. I do know how to mix it, because I wrote and asked but forgot to ask how often. Thanks!!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I've read they like a lot of food and a lot of water. that's what I'm doing.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

How often? How much?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I used osmocoate heavy, like on a brug. and MG once a week or so. My red is 6' tall, and it was about a foot in March at the FL swap.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Okay, I'm going to go do a little digging around it and lay in some Osmocote. I have been using the banana fertilizer one time each week. I just got mine a couple weeks ago and it has put on three new leaves. Jim says with our heat now, it will really start growing. Thanks Bonnie.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Wow, TIG - I got my little red on at the same time & it's still only about a foot high - must need lots more H20 & fert!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

PJ, it's huge, taller than me today!! I just love it, it's putting out stalks on every side. it's in the ground, is yours?

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Yes, and it does have 4 or 5 little shoots, but you are making me feel inadequate!! I have a dwarf for sure, LOl!

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Hey Bonnie,if it is bigger than you that still ain't very big, lol, so PJ you shouldn't feel inadequate.

Irish and Bonnie, if I am not mistaken didn't you guys get the 'Chinese Yellow' that Earl had. If so that is the Musella Lasiocarpa.

I didnt' remember the Chinese part Dee, but from what I can find on the web, it sounds the same. When you get here Friday, you can tell me if my red is ready to take a baby from.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Is there a special fertilizer you guys are using?
Tig, sound like yours is a jack in the beanstalk, or would that be bob in the banana stalk????

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I put down Osmocoate and use MG when I feed the brugs in the same bed. Just lucky here, this is the first time I've ever had luck with one. I have a green in a pot and it isn't doing nearly as well, but it's growing at least! oh, I did put manure in the hole.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm switching. I bought the banana plant fertilizer from Merry Gardens, but if tiG's is that big, it must not be a potent as MG. I want it to get some size to it this year. Would love to see a picture of yours, tiG. I can honestly say that I've never seen one before. Mine is only over a foot tall and looks like a canna at this point.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Tig, yeah, post a picture......pretty please....

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I'll take a picture tomorrow, I'm very proud of it. can't grow a marigold worth a toot, but :)
oh, and mine was only a foot or so in the middle of March, so it will grow and fast!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

tig, we both posted at the same time....I am looking forward to seeing the picture of your banana

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I will and dee is going to look at her Friday to see if it's ready to take a pup. if it is, I'm letting her do it!!!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

lol tig, you're a brave one.....

Every Winter, my bananas die back and looks like I have had a nuclear accident, so I cut them to the ground and they come back in multiples. Even the dead tops that I throw over in the woods come up and I have bananas growing in the woods. I think it is the warm long growing season we have here plus it never stays below freezing very long. It is real hard to get rid of the durn thing if you ever want to dig it up forever. I just throw some 8-8-8 on mine and water, water, water. The good part is that I have them planted by my deck, so they get watered every time I clean off the deck.

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Plus they stay clean Roz, lol. My mother cusses these things, she has some growing in her yard that were there before she moved in and has been trying to get rid of them. I think they are neat looking. Hers had little banana's last year.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Our trees have had bananas several years, but really, they are not the same as you get in the store.
