here's one with GrannyLois and me (that painting in the background is one of my Father's of a village in Turkey))
another one from Vancouver
I'm back! Just got in about an hour ago. Sure did enjoy meeting Pebble and her family and seeing her yard and plants. She fixed us a delicious breakfast, yummy Turkish tea, and some of the best coffee David said he ever tasted. Pebble has an artistic eye which is evident inside the house and outside.
Pebble's the 3rd davesgarden person I've met. Last year I met Darius and earlier this year I met Calalily. I had a nice talk with a traveler who loves gardening at the Portland airport, and I feel sure she will join the garden here. She wanted the name Azalea, but I told her it was already taken. I hope she lets me know if she reads this.
Gotta go - have to check my plants outside. I wonder how they've been doing the past 7 days...
Good to see ya back GL!!! Will be even better to get to meet you........sure wish ya coulda stuffed Pebble into one of yer carry on bags!!!
"eyes"
GrannyLois, It was such a pleasure to meet you and your sisters, and have you over, and what a treat to have dave join us. I wish we could have timed it so that we could have had a turkish dinner, I do much better on dinners, much bigger choice of foods....
As I told you, I won't count this visit, I hope to see you again real soon.
I hope the gardner you met at the airport joins, was she from portland? or just traveling into portland?
I am glad you are back home safe and sound.
Eyes, I would have looked pretty funny hanging out of her bags....I wish I coulda snuk into one though....can you imagine the cricks inyour nexk after a 5 hour flight....egads....
I also wish we had timed it for a turkish dinner. As I said at breakfast, Turkish food is my favorite foods - living in Germany all I ate were Doner Kebabs for lunch and usually for dinner, too! :)
It was a real pleasure meeting you, your husband, and your son. Your son impressed me with how mature, intelligent, and polite he was, and you and your husband made us feel very welcome in your home.
dave
Dave, thank you. It was our pleasure to entertain our gardening friends from across the country. (and thank you for the compliments to my son...)
Dave, there is a new development about a mile from our house, and several restaurants are going in, one of them just knocked us for a loop "doner Haus" does that sound like a Turkish living in Germany has come over here?
we are just so excited to have a turkish restaurant in the same city, the closest one is in Seattle, and we have on occasion driven up for lunch, but it's a long drive for one meal.
Next time you come Dave, please time it for a dinner, we love to entertain...Our dinners last for hours and hours and hours.
I sure enjoyed your company even thought it was sooo brief...and I hope next time around your family will be with you :)
You could count on it, Pebble!!
Trish
Pebble, the woman I talked to at the airport lives in Vancouver, Washington (not Canada, for the benefit of other readers). I gave her the website URL and your name and mine. Hopefully we'll see her on here soon and she will tell us that she's the one I met.
Pebble, your father is an awesome artist! That painting reminds me of Escher's work with its shadows, subject & feel. Does he have an online gallery? Just amazing work!
GL, I hope you friend from the airport finds DGs! It makes me think how small the world is when you meet people & then they meet someone and next you know, you all know each other...
After all this talk of Turkish foods, I'm going to have to find a restaurant and try it! Not sure if the mid-west has picked up on this cuisine yet, but I'll look for it! So much I learn here :)
Morph, It's very easy to cook....
My father has passed away over 16 years ago, none of his work is online, he used to sell thru some galleries here in oregon years and years ago.
Well, I'm not much for being able to appreciate art. What I do do is volunteer to present a "Masterwork" artist each month during the school year to several elementary classes. This is how I've learned a little about some artists.
One thing I've learned is that more artists than I thought have not been as famous while doing their work as much as they have after they've left this world.
How many pieces did your dad create? Did he just stick to canvas or did he do other work as well? Did he prefer oils, pastels, pencils on canvas? I'm not trying to be nosy, I'm just curious because if I were to start, I wondered which was more likely to provide encouraging results rather than frustrating flops!
He painted thousands of paintings, he gave a lot away, and recently some of my relatives has given some back to me, which was great, becaue when I moved back to turkey I took all his best works, and when I returned to the US I had to leave everything behind...(serves me right for being greedy with his paintings...)
he worked with oils mainly, it is the most forgiving medium, and watercolors is the least forgiving. I prefer oils, he did a lot in watercolors too. If youare serious, I would start out with either oils or acrylic, the advantage of acryclic is that is has the feel of oil, dries faster, but you can also use it like a watercolor, you water it down. you only need 5 tubes of paint, red, blue, yellow, white and black, jsut buy some cheap ones and try your hand at it, you have absolutely nothing to loose. Once you get into it, you can try oils, or watercolors, or stick with acrylic.
I love the smell of linseed oil and turpentine, nothing takes me back to my childhood than a whiff of linseed oil...
One of my relatives recently gave me two boxes of books that were my fathers, if you are truly interested, I can send you one or two, he collected a lot of books for beginners, he taught me how to paint at a very early age, I think I still have my first painting, an oil landscape, that I made in three steps, following dirrections from a book. let me know..
Pebble, I am very interested! But, I've also just given my two week notice at work after nine years! I've a lot on my mind right now & lot's of emotions ~ it's been a choice I've been considering/debating for about a year now.
I've so many interetst that I'm not sure which ones will stick & which may not. May I take a rain check and see where my life leads me over the next few months? You're very generous to offer, but I wouldn't want to accept until I've gotten myself successfully transitioned to my new routine. I do think that if I procede with this, it may help be improve my presentations to my classes during the school year.
Thanks so much for offering :)
Morph, any time, just let me know. good luck with your transition, I hope you find your niche in life....
