Memberlist by U.S. State

When I was on the phone with Mark a couple weeks ago, he asked for a clickable map of the United States.

Once again, in an unprecedented showing of excellent customer service and response to member feedback :) I have achieved the impossible by linking a map of the United States to our memberlist.

Click on Memberlist (in the menu) and scroll down the see the map. Click on the state you want, and it will list the members who indicated that they live there. You can also click on the "City" header to sort by the city.

Fun fun fun!

Dave

great addition Dave.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Hey, that's pretty cool. But my mom must have moved again - I couldn't find her in Kansas OR Nebraska. Has anyone seen my mother???? (LOLOLOL)

They have to enter a "NE" or "KS" as the state in their membership, otherwise they don't show up.

Also, Notice that weezin' lives in Alaska and has "Alaska" as the state, but doesn't show up because it's not the 2 letter abbreviation.

One day I may further refine this to fix that.

Actually, what I need to do is force people into abbreviations by giving them pull downs instead of free form fields for state.

I'm the homeless one in Canada. It's interesting looking at your map of how so many members are located on the coasts.

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Liz, more than half the US population lives within 50 miles of the coasts! Weird but true!

Antrim, Northern Ire, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

thanks Dave

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

oh wow Dave, arent you just incredible?????

thanks - you are doing a superb job!

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Love ya Dave.......only wish I'd opened my mouth before I spent two days going through zones 6-9 for Texas members...LOL. Need to learn to hollar for help more often!!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Dave - I clicked on Maine .... and I'm not there!! How come? Maybe cuz I didn't spell out the state?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Sue, try abbreviating it, and see what happens.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Okay - I'm there now =]

Brooklet, GA(Zone 8a)

great dave you never cease to amaze us!

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

Dave how do we get our names on.. neither Greenwood or I show for FL.
Sugar_fl & Greenwood

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I didn't show up in North Dakota either, and I was giddy with excitement thinking I had moved or something , but, alas, it was just a simple matter of abbreiviating North Dakota to ND that put me on the map.

If I would have put AL, or MS or FL or CA in there, do you think I would have warped to a warmer climate?

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Excuse me, but I have to interject here. Dave has done lots of cool things, but I was disappointed when I looked up Alaska and found two people listed, neither subscribing members, and Ceeads and I were not included... we're both subscribers. For the most part, we Alaskans always use the complete word, rather than the abreviation because everybody assumes we are from Arkansas. It's a bit irritating after awhile, so we make the distinction. It it is necessary to change it, I have no objection, but I guarantee you folks will think we are from the south.

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

weezie just go to...ABOUT YOU.. then preferences... change Alaska to AK & you will be there... it works I KNOW :)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Yes, I understand, but from that point on, whenever I post to a thread, my address will appear as AK, which many people assume to be Arkansas. Our planting requirements are so different from others, it's helpful to have it understood, or I'm prefacing every entry with "We Alaskans" which is pretty irritating after awhile. I guess the issue is only important if I want to appear on the map. Just wanted to have my say.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I totally understand Carol. I had reservations about abrieviating North Dakota too, because in the past I've had people think I was at Notre Dame. Not at this site though.

I think if we leave our zone info in tact, they will put two and two together.

AK = Alaska?
AZ = Arizona?
AR = Arkansas?
AL = Alabama?

Is this right? I'm trying to learn this in my old age when I could have learned it when I was younger if I'd have just tried.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

One would think people could make the connection, Joan, I have to admit that I don't always know all the state abbreviations, and am unsure where someone is from by their postings, so I'm not trying to insult anyone.

I've just dealt with this error before. We've received calls from businesses back East in the wee hours of the morning because they think they are calling Arkansas. It seems like Alaska doesn't exist for much of the lower 48 states.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Weezin, you *could* put "Seward, Alaska" in your city field, and AK in the state. (You might give it a shot and see how it looks...)

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

Great feature, Dave. It's much easier than looking through all of the member lists, one by one. Thanks for all of your hard work putting it together.

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Will you get any more maps in the future? :D

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Rapid City, SD(Zone 5b)

Nice job Dave! Love it! - hey Evert did I hear you volunteering to do a map of all of Europe? You go boy!!!

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Hmm... I bet Dave finds better maps somewhere ;)

Jerome, MI(Zone 5b)

Oh dear, Michigan is missing lots....sniff sniff. We are here anyway....Guess we are just hiding..!!!! Diana

Mason, MI

Diana: aka Wantabegardener,
Go to About You and click on Preferences
(on the side menu on this page)...
change your state to MI (instead of spelling out Michigan)
and see what happens. :-)
There are a bunch of us in MI,
although a couple of us weren't on the new map...
We should have some sort of a Michigan get-together sometime!
Melissa ;-)

P.S. Thanks Dave, for such a cool, new, feature!

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

whizzie, My DH has lots of family in Alaska. He has been there a few times to visit. I wish some day I could make the trip but doubt I will ever get too. He has told me a lot of stories about his trips. One of his younger cousins flew his own plane down & came to see us too. He showed us a lot of pictures. It would be a great place to visit but think I'd rather live in sunny FL :)

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank You Dave! I was one of those that wanted a map a while ago. It is even better than I had hoped for.. what a joy it is to be a part of this great family of friends! Yahhoo..

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Imagine my surprise when I clicked Ohio and found a DG user from Granville, the town right next to us here in Ohio! The person isn't a subscriber, but I dropped him/her and e-mail and said hello.

What happens if an e-mail we send through the site bounces? Do you get the notification, then notify us? Otherwise, it's hard to know whether the person just didn't reply, or if there was a problem in sending.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

If the email bounces, you'll never know. Bounced emails happen all of the time, and we only bother to go through them once in a blue moon. Just too much trouble.

Trish

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Okey dokey, question answered. Thanks Trish. :)

Good idea, Go_vols. Maybe I'll try the abbreviation, and if it causes confusion, I'll try it your way.

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Think Evert's map of europe idea would be great if you ever get the time Dave..........
Just as i'd no idea of where the different states are and who lives where, i'm sure a lot of DGers have no idea of how we europeans are distributed. We have trouble ourselves a lot of the time LOL

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Yes, quite true, Philomel.
