Wouldn't you know it, GrannyLois is coming to Portland today, and she is bringing her hot weather with her....
We are expected to reach 90 degrees today, the hospital emergency rooms are gearing up for heat related emergencies. radios and TV are cautioning us to stay indoors, drink lots of fluids and take care of our elderly, tots and pets....
when I left the house this morning it was 61 at 7:30 am
just on monday at that time we were still at 49
over the weekend, I dont think it hit 65 in the hottest part of the day....
I think my brugs will grow a foot!
Heat wave in portland/vancouver
Pebble, up here west of Seattle and across the Sound, it is going to get to 90, and I am dreading it like crazy!! Garter snakes everywhere, and drying winds. YUCK! Amazing how we freak out in the Pacific NW when it gets over 80 around here, huh? But this time of year, when we have a heat wave, I long for the cool, clean air of Alaska again. I am NOT a heat person! Hope you are staying cool. Drink a lot of water.
Penny, here too we are not used to this type of weather, and the emergency rooms reflect this. Heat related incidents etc., besides which, it seems that when it gets this hot, road rage takes on a whole new meaning......
We are lucky, I work in an office with A/C, and my husband insisted on putting in A/c into our house about 4 years ago, and I gave him a real hard time about it saying it was silly to put that kind of money into something that we may use 3 or 4 times a year.....
the other thing is that we have to water the lawn to keep it green when it gets hot like this.....
try to say cool up there...have you heard how long it's going to last? the weather report before this one said that we would be back to cloudy and 60 for the weekend....
Yeah, that's what I heard, too. Supposed to be hot for two days and then start cooling, with clouds by the weekend.
I have to go to town this afternoon, and I am dreading it. Like you said, road rage in the heat is just amazing! At least I don't have to go to Seattle, just to Bremerton and Silverdale. But it is still too crowded and crazy, especially with the heat.
We have a well, so watering isn't too big of a problem. I tend to let the grass go "pale green" when the hubby is gone, so it won't grow as fast, thus less mowing. When he gets home in 15 days, the watering will begin in earnest! He will water anything, as long as he doesn't have to weed. :) I watered the veggies in the raised beds very deeply last night after the sun set. So they should do fine. I have soaker hoses in the flower beds. The little rose bed will need a drink today, and so will the hops and all the containers.
Today, I would love to have A/C !! What a nice treat that would be. I already have all the fans going, so that helps. At least the truck has A/C, so the drive to town will be refreshing.
Penny
I just went home for lunch, the thermometer in my car registered 99......
Well, I'm tired of it already. It is supposed to be 5 degrees hotter tomorrow! My house has a big southern exposure, so I have all my drapes closed, and all the fans on, and it is still too hot!! The wind is blowing here from the north, so that feels good - but it isn't constant. I don't know how the folks in the East and Southwest can do it!!
we just do :) it's all in what you get used to. heat index the other day was 105 and it's only early June. it's hard for me to fathom someone not having a/c. we tried living without it last year and nearly died. lost tons of things in the house due to mildew.
Well, I can tell you one thing, your body acclamates itself to the climate you're in. And for us here in the NW, we are used to a gradual increase to the heat, this going from the 50's to the 90's wrecks havoc with our system (not to mention our gardens...)
It wasnt too bad yesterday, although we had an awards ceremony at school that took place in the gym, crowded no ventilation and of course no A/C.... we certainly felt the heat...
I am not going to complain about the heat though...
HIGH 90'S HERE.
pebble, that's usually how we go from winter to spring. 50 one day then 90 and then it stays for a bit, then up and down and then just up and up. but you're right of course, we are used to it. well, as used to it as you can get. somedays there just isn't enough deoderant if you want to work outside;)
No use in complaining, especially since it is only supposed to last through today, and then go back to the 70s. This isn't as bad as it could be, since the breeze is blowing here. My poor pea plants are grumpy, though! :( That's right, pebble, we usually we don't get high heat this early in the season. Tends to wait until August and September to raise much above 80. Sort of a shock to the system this early! :)
I lived in southern Indiana for a while and I never could get used to not getting dry after a shower, or waking to beads of moisture on my car, when there has been no rain or fog! HA! I seem to do better in dry heat, like in Arizona. I think I have so much intollerance because I'm large...so chaffing is a problem! ;O Not enough baby powder in the world!!!
Boy, A/C would sure be nice! DH called and told me to buy a window version, but I figure the heat will be over with before I figure out how to install the thing! HA!
lol Penny, I'd say come down to vancouver, I have an extra room...but egads, the mess it's in! and besides, by the time you make it here, it will cool off anyway.
Or, just get in your car right now and start driving down 1-5, then take the mill plain exit....you might be here by 4 or 5....
so funny, pebble! My exra bedroom is a "storage bin" too!! The other bedroom is the office now. I am tempted to go out to our travel trailer and stay the day, since it has a nice fat air conditioner in it.
By golly, the next time we head south, you just might hear from us. Would be great to meet! I promise not to make you clean your guest room! HA!
Right now, the news is all focused on A) the baby orca rescue; and b) the heat. Have you heard of the Canadian Orca which got seperated from its pod, and is hanging out trying to "play" with the huge ferries crossing at Vashon Island and vicinity! Well, they are moving it today to a wildlife holding area to check it for disease, and then back to its birth pod. Poor baby! It will be a sunburned whale in this heat!!
hey girls, I have two 'storage rooms'!!! I don't think I'll ever get to the bottom of them.
