Company for supper from Australia

Might not get to chat tonight. Company coming for supper from Australia. DD lived there for a year in the 80's and two of her friends are visiting her and they are coming over for supper tonight. She said the whole time she was over there she missed moms fried chicken so when she told her down under friends they were coming to moms for supper, they asked for the fried chicken she missed so much while she lived there. Watch me burn it. LOL...Anxious to hear that accent again. Of course I'm sure they are enjoying the yankee accent as well.

got a kfc nearby, lol???

Just don't get distracted by those lovely accents and forget about the chicken - otherwise you will do just fine!

Okay Vic, you have to come back and tell us how dinner went. ;) Hope you had fun.

Hey Michele...Dinner went really well. We had fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, fresh corn, blueberry muffins, peach pie and french vanilla ice cream. I fried 14 or 15 pcs of chicken and there was one left so I guess I did good - LOL. We had a nice visit and they will be at dd's through Sunday so we may see them again. I had forgotten those accents and I think I may have caught two words that they said - LOL. Oh, and just for giggles and laughs I bought those refrigerated dough cookies that you slice and they have American Flags on them and baked them. And DD said she had her Australian Flag flying for them at her house and they really appreciated that. It's always neat to meet people from other countries especially if you speak the same language (well, sort of) and it was a really nice evening. One of dd's several Aussie books is a dinkum dictionary and it explains what they mean when they say certain things. For example, Chuck it in the bin - Throw it in the trash, etc. Before us, they visited San Franciso, San Diego, and Los Angeles and got to see Robin Williams doing a movie. They have also been to Disney in Florida. From here they will go to New York before leaving for Europe. They are planning to visit Ground Zero. I asked them if they got lots of coverage about September 11 and they said it was on the news 24/7 before the second plane ever hit. Ok, well I sure you didn't want me to write a book - LOL but it was a really fun evening.

Vic it is nice to see you so animated and excited! I can tell you had a wonderful visit and many humorous moments. You are such a joy to me and those around you! I can barely imagine what you be would be like in person. I am sure if I ever got to meet you, I would just want to hug you death! Your chicken and the whole dinner sounds wonderful! You are such a sweetie.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Wow, I missed another good meal? ô¿ô
Sounds like a great time! Too bad tho they didn't have time to visit DavesGarden tho!
I bet you've got friends for life from those folks now!

Hey Horseshoe...you are welcome to come to our house anytime you want for dinner. Would love to have you and your family....

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Me, too? The whole Ohio gang can just take a road trip to Vic's home and make a fun visit of it! My sister-in-law also spent a year in Australia & still visits her family and vice-versa when possible. Hadn't heard about the dinkum dictionary, though. It kind of sounds like something from Croc Dundee :) Is it available on Amazon.com ~ lol...

Not sure Morph...I'll check it out as we are going over there this evening. She bought it while in Australia but I'll get the ISBN number and post it. She brought several books back actually, but the the Dinkum Dictionary is funny to read. The Buckeye Gang is welcome anytime. You know, I lived in OH for almost 25 years and didn't get to meet all you wonderful people, but then I wasn't into gardening then either. I HOPE we make it to the OHIO roundup...Not sure yet....

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Vic, I didn't recall that your were in Ohio until you mentioned it. I think you may have mentioned it in the chat room once. It would be fun if you could make it up here for the Ohio RR. I checked out Amazon.com & I think I found a used Dinkum dictionary. It looks like it may be out of print, but I'm going to try to snag one for fun :)

Hey Morph...I did get the ISBN number so let me know if you need it. Now I have to say something (giggle)...You know how we all talk to teach other all day and we think we really know each other but we really don't know each other???? What I'm trying to say is...the Dinkum Dictionary is a bit risque and has some very graphic pictures of the human anatomy (comic book form) in it sooooo, if you are easily offended...you might not want to get...On the other hand, it is quite funny. Hilarious actually...

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Vic, thanks for the "heads up". I appreciate your concern since you're right that we really don't know the "reals" of each other. I'm not too easily offended unless I'm having a REALLY bad day! And, now, you've really got my curiousity peaked!

There were several Dinkum books on Amazon so maybe you wouldn't mind posting the ISBN number? There was the "The dinkum dictionary : a ripper guide to Aussie English", "Dinkum Aussie Rhyming Slang : A Handbook of Australian Rhyming Slang", "Dinkum Dictionary of Aussie English", "Dinkum Aussie Dictionary" and actually quite a few more than I first saw!

Thanks in advance :)

Just to give you an idea of my fun sometimes, here's a few things something I put together with pictures from the Eagle Cam some of us have been watching in the general discussion forum. Roadrunner, Jo, posted the link for us.

FYI that this first link has the disclaimer of being associated with potty talk --> http://davesgarden.com/editgj/showimage.php?iid=7699

This one was just for fun and is not offensive --> http://davesgarden.com/editgj/showimage.php?iid=7542

Hi Morph....ISBN for Dinkum Dictionary is 0-670-90051-6 and the author is Lenie (Midge) Johansen...BTW, went to DD's for dinner last night and the aussies are still there and they gave us vegemite. OH YUK!....Like pouring a gallon of salt on a piece of bread. But it's like Rohan said, I guess you have to grow up with it. They are enroute to Raleigh now to catch a flight to the Big Apple. Going to go check out your hyperlinks...

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

sounds like a great night and certainly sounds like you were great hosts!

as far as the sept 11th thing?? our country was stunned and horrified..... nearly all asutralians cried for days.. the shopping centres were deserted as were the streets..
our heart broke for you and our resolve to stand by our fellow man over there in america only grew stronger...

by jingo! we love ya's!

We had a lovely visit with our dear aussie friends. They are now in the Big Apple. The highlight of NC was seeing squirrels, deer, lightening bugs, an get this - Outback Steakhouse, an Australian restaurant here in the states. They enjoyed everything on the walls and even requested and got a menu to keep. It was a great time and I will always remember them...

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Thanks, Vic, for the ISBN... Too many from which to pick & it was like finding a wooden spoon in a haystack! I'm trying to get together a complete order to save on price & shipping. Plento books on our wish list; just have to use discretion & self-control.

Bet they taught the servers at Outback a thing or two! Hope they'll share some of their favorite pictures with you so you can share with us, too :) We Americans need to see ourselves from the eyes of others & have some humour, too!

What a hoot! Wish my sister-in-law wasn't in Hawaii ~ otherwise I'd love to invite them & have them all visit one another. It would probably be as though they'd been friends for life!

(Zone 5a)

Vic it is so wonderful to have friends all over the world.
See you didn't burn the chicken lol, I know you had a ball.
I do hope that you can make it to the Ohio round up I would love to meet you and family.

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

I also hope you can make the OH roundup! Great to meet former Buckeyes (as long as you're not an OSU fan [just kidding...])
