I lost my germination instrustions for this vine. Does anyone have any experience starting these seeds?
Patricia
Allamanda Vine
I did not do anything special with mine. I just pushed them into seed mix and kept it watered until they sprouted. Easy germination at about 68 degrees.
They make seeds?
Cala might be getting some seed babies. I am a sneak too. :)
I've grown allamandas and mandevillas for years and have never had a seed pod. Tell me more Michelle......
I got mine from a lovely girl that lives in Texas. When I got them they were labeled as Indian rubber vine and when I asked for more info she told me they were Allamanda. I will have to find the email or note to see what the rest of the name was. I believe I have a couple of seedlings in my hoopster. I will post them later for you all to give your opinion of whether or not I am nuts. LOL
Here is a link that says it can be propogated by seeds and cuttings. http://www.hear.org/pier3/alcat.htm This one talks about bursting fruits and seeds. http://www.tropilab.com/allamanda.html
Maybe I better look closer. At those prices for seeds, I might have a goldmine. :-)
I didn't even notice the prices! LOL At one time I must have had about $50 worth of seeds. Oh well.......Hope you find some seeds Brugie.
Me too. I still have a Chocolate Cherry plant and bought a new yellow one this year from Logee's. I have a lot of mandevillas, but have never seen seed on them either. I love a challenge, so I'll be checking closely for seed this year. Thanks Michele.
Cala, Badseed and Brugie, right now in the seed trading forum, Babalu a trader and friend gardener from Brasil, is trading Allamanda seeds, he said he got 15 trades and got some responses, so why don't you send him a mail?

Allamandas are beautiful and fragrant vines
I just bought a Allamanda neriifolia at Home Depot last week. Are there more than one kind? Mine has yellow flowers and it does not look like a vine. I had one last year and it died in the frost. thanks
Kell, mine don't vine either, More bushy. My mandys vine a lot though. Don't know why allamandas are considered a vine.
Kell...I have lavender, and it has seed pods...hehehe...how's my favorite vine of yours doing???? They say that it vines with a trellis or shrubs on its own. I had to work to get mine to weave into the trellis, wish I'd known it could have been a shrub, it would've been lovely, as it is about 10 ft tall now. I'm going to let my new ones grow shrubs.
Meiyu, I'd love to see the bloom on a lavendar one. Don't suppose you would like to part with a few of those seeds, would you? Kell, I have the yellow Allamanda Cathartica Flore Plena and it rarely blooms. I may be doing something wrong, but don't think so. I gave my chocolate cherry plant to Kyle. Think maybe I have too much stuff and can't care for it all right? :-) I like the Nerifolia. Does it have the gray foliage?
sure, brugie...watch for my post when the guy in phoenix or someone tells me when to pick them and remind me that you're number 3 on my list, k? there are lotsa pics here. go to the threads i've started, and look for anything that says something like mandevilla or seed pods with question marks...i counted 32 open flowers on her today, and 3 times that amount in buds. thought she was about 10 ft tall already, but measured her to be only 7 ft (everything looks bigger to me). deep green leaves, like on a rubber plant, only more the size of mandevilla's leaves. now that i found out what sase is, that might be a good way of making me remember who I owe seeds to when i get them down...i can keep them in her file and mail them all out when it's time. my addy: meiyu delfs, 25402 mesa view, satx 78258. mail me one, and i'll remember you. go look at the pics and tell me what you think!! oh, she's in a spot where her feet are nice and cool, covered with lotsa pine bark mulch, and only gets the late texas sun directly from about 3-4pm on, and i superbloom her twice a month, if that helps you any. my friend just told me the cutting i gave him is working, but none of mine lived. if his starts sending new side shoots out, i'm gonna have him take a bunch to his greenhouse for me. will let you know!!!
Will get a SASE in the mail tomorrow. Thanks.
That is a beautiful lavendar mandy.
Meiyu, I am curious if this is what you have: http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/Asclepiadaceae/Cryptostegia_grandiflora.html I have two seedlings to trade/give away if anyone wants them. They are not hardy for me but I enjoyed growing them from seed two years in a row. I am a play baby. LOL Matter of fact, I have several of plants that will not be hardy here and I would be happy to trade them for perennials that would be hardy in zone 6.
oh seed!!!! that's gorgeous. I could trade later in the month, tapped right now. I'll get a list of the perennials I have to see if there are any you don't have.
Like I have to have a *trade* from YOU! LOL I don't know if you have the other things I have that are not hardy. I will have to get outside and make a list. The bulbs I can store, but I just don't have room for the other stuff. Let me know if you want a list. :)
Badseed, that's exactly what I have! Please tell me when and how to get the seeds. I have two huge pods.
Hi Meiyu, I wish I could be of more help, but a friend sent me the seeds. I can tell you for sure, when I got the seeds they were long and reddish brown, sort of shaped like pieces of minute rice. I read somewhere they get little fluffies on top to help them fly and reseed. I hope that helps you a bit.
Uh-oh, Badseed, this is not good news. My seed pods are really big. Can you look at the picture I posted? I believe its titled Mandevilla seed pod? or something like that, probably in plant id. They'd drop like an apple, no way they'd fly, and the only way the seeds would be like minute rice is if they're inside, but that would be good news, cuz then that would mean there must be a couple of hundred or more in each pod...how exciting would that be???
Well, I thought I would tell you all that since I originally started this thread, my Alamanda seeds have
sucessfully germinated. Now I just hope I can keep them warm enough through the winter to survive.
What does your Allamanda look like Patricia? what color? What are you going to do with it over the winter?
Jerodsmom, how did you do it?I have some seed I keep saying I'm gunna start......
Meiyu, I really think you will be alright and I am taking a guess this is one of those seed pods that pops open like a milkweed and disperses it's seeds. I read in another site that it is a nuisance in some climates. And your pods could have a lot of the fluff that makes the seeds float on the wind. Let me find that site again. Man, I am good! Look down under description in this link: http://www.agric.wa.gov.au/programs/app/Weeds/rubbervine.htm The girl I got them from sent me a lot of seeds, so I would bet they really do have several per pod. :) I'd keep an eye on them.
My guess is that when the pod starts to look like it is drying, you could pick them. Most seeds will continue to dry out of the pod anyway. Just be sure they are dry before you package them up or they will mold.
badseed is awesome!!! thanks!! finally, a picture of the pods, and yes, that's exactly it!! i finally feel comfortable and am 100% sure that i know what it is. i was beginning to think it may be some kind of poisonous fruit when i saw about 10-16 more baby pods coming. how exciting that they are all seeds!!!
send me all your sase's if you want some out of the first pod, so i don't forget you all who want me to send them out. i will file the envelopes in her file and when the pod opens, i will collect, dry and mail. i'm gonna go put a net sac around it right now, so i don't loose any. it's taken 3 months for this pod to begin darkening, and the other pods are only as big as the tip of my thumb...they won't be ready before thanksgiving, i'd imagine!
Sorry, it took me so long to get back to this thread.
I just took a chance and potted them up in seed starting
mix just covering the seeds and put a plastic top over them. I have them in a very bright room where it always is warm. I was really surprised that they came up. During the winter when we use the heater, this upstairs room is always really really warm and I get almost all day sun in there. That is where they will be spending the winter.
Patricia
Why did you pot them up so early Patricia? Why not wait more towards spring? I am just wondering how I am going to do my whole new seed thing I will be doing this year.
And Congrats!! Glad to hear of your success!
Great news, Kell...my friend, Jim, got one of the two cuttings to grow, and says it's growing great. He's coming over today to take more cuttings to his greenhouse to get started for me. How do I know when the seed pod is ripe? It's been there since the beginning of May!
I have never seen one of these myself. But in general they usually turn brown, start to crack open to disperse their seed. I wish I had a greenhouse. It makes everything so much easier!
Me, too! Jim said he built his, and said he would build me one this fall, but he's having medical probs, so I'm gonna try to get Peter to do it. I should have your rooted cuttings in a month; I put you on my list (Jim said he'll do it in his greenhouse until I get my own...cool, huh?)
very cool or should I say warm....LOL
I'm looking for Yellow Allamanda, Golden Trumpet seeds. Anybody have some?
hi kkinmaui...have a friend here who has yellow alamanda and am getting ready to call him now that i know how to root cuttings. if you'd like me to send you a cutting or two, email me, k?
I tried the link for how to start cutting from the alamanda but it said the page was unavaliable. What is the best way to start them from cuttings? I am suppose to trim up a plant for a friend and I would like to start some of them from the cuttings. Thanks for any help you might have to offer.
Page didn't work for me either...I also would like to know,as I need to cut mine back.
Listed my experience rooting Alamanda cuttings on Linda's posting.......
