oh! HAIL!!!

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

So, now. I have holes in everything from that storm yesterday. Hailed alot. And it stayed around for like a good hour. So, my poor flowers. SO far this Spring.... seeds are washed away too many times to count. Then. we are frosted on . then snowed on in Late May. Now hail. This probably the 3rd hail storm so far this Spring. I am so disguested I could spit!

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

Wow, Mimi! Where do you live again?

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Aw Mimi, I'm so sorry. We haven't had the hail yet, but came close a time or two. It's hit all around us. I'm sure with the way this spring has been it's just a matter of time for us too. We have had the late snows and cold, but not the rain, so you've had more than your share.

As an afterthought we may have to contact the place I got the Lauren's Grape poppies from and reserve some for next year, since it doesn't look like either of us will get some this year.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

LOL Melody! The more the merrier!

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh, Mimi! I'm so sorry to hear that!! Keep your chin up! It'll get better!

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Yeah,I've got 'em too...posted a pic in photos of the little monsters with those scary red eyes...see 'invasion' thread!

This reminds me of the Plagues of the Old Testament..Hail,Floods ,locusts...uh oh..

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

hahahlolol.....well.??? It DOES seem rather strange. BBBBRRRRR Its freezin here this mornin too!

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

I detest those little monsters but it's rather amusing to watch a bird go after them in the air. Did anyone hear about Kennywood Park here in Pittsburgh? The wind dropped a roof onto an amusement ride. Sadly one killed and many many more injured.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

yep! I'm not far from there

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Sorry MM - it's been a frustrating spring for you. I saw the havoc on the TV. That storm just refused to move very fast. We were hit by one hail storm a couple of year's ago and had to have the roof replaced. As for my garden, it was torn to shreds and the camelias looked as though they have been attacked with scissors. I hope your plants bounce back!!

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Tomorrow is another day! :) I'm trudging on!

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

You sound like Scarlet O'Hara!!! LOL Two weeks ago it forze here. Today, it was 95 and 99% humidity!! Weird weather!!! Lou

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

It was cooler today and tonight it's lovely. Tomorrow's supposed to be sunny and in the 70's here, finally! All the rain has killed a few of my plants, which have rotted in the saturated ground: a lavender, sweet william and foxgloves. And no doubt a few iris will succumb to the rot before this is all over and warmer, dryer climes settle in.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Mimi & Joan: I've got Lauren's Grape poppy seedlings and plan to grow a big pot of them. If I get seeds, I'll be glad to share with you next fall. Sorry to hear of the bad weather down your way, Mimi.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Weeze, you are like a breath of spring! If you get seeds, I would gladly trade with you.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

No problem, Joan. I plan to set them off to themselves so they don't cross pollinate. I have high hopes for these poppies, so I hope I'm not just falling for another pretty picture! Give me a reminder this fall, since I often have Senior moments that wipe out my memory!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Will do! I hope if you get poppies from them you will post a pic or send me a pic. They are gorgeous! I'm playing with a couple of Royal Wedding poppy seedlings, but I'm scared of them since I know they don't like to be transplanted. If I get it done, I'll have seed from those since I don't have any seeds I planted outside showing up to contest the paternity.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

poppies in a pot! now. why didn;t I think of that. dang! i think I might have a few here adn there. maybe even in the sidewalk crack. I have things sliding all ove rthe place

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Hi, Mimi. Once things get rolling in the summer, it seems like little volunteers show up everywhere. Poppies are always a welcome surprise.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Weez...I hope you are right! I keep looking! :)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I just love volunteer plants. I suppose they get to be a problem in the warmer climates where everything pops up, but here it is a treat. I was pleased to find forget-me-nots, arabis, and columbine growing in our gravel driveway by the flower beds. I've rescued a few and moved them to safer spots. I usually fill the front of one of my beds with the blue violas that pop up every year. Here's hoping your poppies do the same for you!

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

I never have heard that term before. Volunteer. What is that. just the ones that sefl seed here and there and pop up where you least expect them.?

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Yep, that's it. I also have plants that show up in my flats because some errant seeds happened to get into the mix. They always seem to be the healthiest plants.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

the healthiest? WOW! Great to know. I could use a few good plants.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I just added volunteer to the gardenology page. Paulgrow had volunteer seedling in there, but I added just plain volunteer just now. Let's see if the term is highlighted when I post. :)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Nope. Hmmmm....

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

been weeding and putting down mulch today. MY! I have columbine volunteers everywhere. And the usual ton of morning glory seedlings poping up here. there and everywhere. Where you least expect them. Am leaving every single columbine . just love those

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

When I was young and stupid (stupider!), I used to feel I had to get out there in the beds and start digging as soon as weather permitted. Over the years, I've learned to give the beds time to offer up a few volunteers. Sometimes I leave them where they are, but often I move them elsewhere. It's like a little extra dividend on your planting investment! I wish I could see a few morning glory seedlings coming up! I can't seem to grow them here... too damp and cold.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

I only pull out now what I know 100% are weeds. I think I was taking out my coneflower and thing of the like before I figured that one out! lol. DAH!!!! Oh! I am taking out alot of slugs and some type of brown cone shelled something or other under ground. EW!!!!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Haven't seen any slugs yet this year. It's still pretty early here. It's been raining the last couple days, so that should be a good test. I have a hard time wearing gloves to garden, but being a beautician, I'll bet you like to keep your hands nice. Mine look like they belong to a logger! I just can't weed with gloves. I keep pulling the wrong things!

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

I was that way too till I found the wonder gloves. I just love them. They are in garcen catalogs . they are just thee best. Wouldn;t do a thing with out them. My hands get trashed at work too. I wear these really nice hair color gloves there too that have been great. they are thin. Madador. If you know a stylist that can get them for you there. Come in half sizes. they fit like a second skin. Can just wash. not like a medical glove at all. They would be nice to weed with too.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Thanks, Mimi. I'll have to look into the brands you mentioned. I handle so much soil that my hands are thrashed all the time.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Hey, neat to know that about those gloves. I found some links where they're sold online if you can't find them in Seward. Not that you couldn't, of course... ;)

http://www.hairmedic.com/store/en-us/dept_198.html and http://www.matadorgloves.com/gloves.htm

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Thanks, Gardenwife. The only industrial gloves you'd find in Seward would be for fishermen! The price on these gloves is certainly reasonable. I'll have to try a pair or two. Thanks for the links!

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

The second likn! thats the nice ones I use at work. The top photo. !LOVE them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! been doing hair almost 20 years now. Thee best.
The wonder gloves are my favorite too for gardening. In my opinion.
I had a posting somewhere wiht a lin kon them. have to get to work now. Can;t look.
