PDB - adding alternative names

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

This cropped up because i saw hc's photo of Viburnum opulus, with a common name i'd never heard of over here.
I thought it would be of interest to others to add the name we use (though, as you probably know, i'd rather use botanical names anyway)
When i went to do this i found that i could only give an alternative botanical name - something much less likely to be needed than an alternative common name i would have thought.
Am I doing something wrong, or is that how it works?

Philomel, you're right - once an entry is created, you can't add to the common name. And synonyms are meant for botanical synonyms.

If you can email me with the details, I'll be glad to edit entries for you,and add more common names :)

If I find a plant without the common name I have, I add it at the bottom in my "comments". Does that show up in a search?

I recently added Poncirus and 'somebody' added two 'common' names???

Michelle, it might have been me, although I don't specifically recall working on that entry. I do try to go in and add common names when an entry has none; for two basic reasons:

1. It helps those who know only the common name to find the plant. Without it in the PDB, there is no way for the system to "know" that grandma's such-and-such plant is botanically "Suchius somethingii" plant (grin). Without opening up another debate on botanical vs. common names, my humble opinion is that we need to do everything we can to build a bridge between the two names, not insist that everyone come to our database armed with a thorough knowledge of plant taxonomy.

2. Our system "keys" off the common name. You might have noticed a few times when a comment is added to a plant that doesn't have a common name listed, there's no way to get to the comment - there's no link shows up because there's no wording in that field.

And Wingnut, to answer your question, no - adding them in the Comments will not allow them to show up in a search; if you need me to add some to the entries, let me know :)

Whatever happened to the "Latin Lookup"?

It never went away. Still at the same location at http://plantsdatabase.com/latin/

Oooooooooh! There just used to be a link over on the right side. And Tom Selleck! ;)
