I have a question, Dave or Go-vols

Salem, OR(Zone 8a)

I just uploaded a photo to the PDB. It is of a 'black penny' Nemophila. I searched and found Nemophila, and found two photos of different types there, so I just uploaded my shot to that page, with no new entry, of course. So there are now three colors of this plant on that page. But I notice that the 'black penny' doesn't show on the title anywhere. Is that OK?

penny, I did a bit of research, and it appears that the 'Penny Black' cultivar is actually Nemophilia menziesii, so I added it to the PDB, and moved your photo to the new entry. Here's a link if you want to check it out: http://plantsdatabase.com/go/31753/

Generally speaking, anytime I notice a photo of a cultivar added, I try to go in and create a new entry for it. What we found in the old version of the PDB is that many species have multiple cultivars that are very different from each other. If we create a new entry for each one, we can search by the cultivar name, too.

Thanks so much, go-vols! No wonder my search elsewhere didn't come up with the right plant. I wasn't using menziesii, and that is the key. So I just figured it was a "new" cultivar of the same Nemophilia as those in the PDB. Thanks for your help. I'm learning, slowly, but surely! :)

hope I can jump in here on the same subject. I have a hybrid geranium that isn't in the PDB. I don't know the parentage or anything, just the cultivar name. How do I add something like that?

tiG you can put the cultivar name into google and it should come up with the botanical name or, of course, you can ask here :)

And to tag on what Baa said, in the case of hybrids, we often can't pin down a species name. (Take a peek at the Hostas and daylilies in the PDB if you don't believe me, LOL.)

I would much rather help a member complete an entry than to have someone not contribute a plant and photo :)

And to further add to Vols post ;) the RHS often lists a plant with just the Genus and cultivar name simply because the parentage of the cultivar is complicated or unknown.
