my stepdad, died last december, was a paratrooper, Ranger in the korean war.
wanted to mention
Best wishes to you and all families of our heroes this Memorial Day. We thank them and you for all that was done, and is still being done.
My dad drove a tank in world war 2 under patton! Hes been gone now for 8yrs! I have some of his war metals! =]
Im so proud of all are VETS!
My handsome uncle was one of the many who left home a perfectly healthy young man and returned with a condition known as "shell-shock". Some form of explosive landed at his feet on the deck of his ship, and blew him and his crew into the water. All night, he watched and listened as his friends either moaned, screamed in pain or raved hysterically. Those who were saved were never able to erase the effects, and were subject to what we would now call panic attacks, for the remainder of their lives. Uncle Buck was my favorite uncle, but his mental demons prevented him from relating closely with any of us after the war. He always looked like he was about to run and hide, but there was a quiet sadness in his eyes, too. For all of the families with an Uncle Buck, and all the mothers and sisters and fathers and brothers who lost their sons and daughters and siblings to this mental prison, I offer a prayer and an humble thanks.
My grandfather was fighting in Karelia, and got shell splinters to his back. He returned and died on 1993 (I still remember something about him and his funerals). Thanks for all Finnish vets for fighting for our independence.
Evert, I always think of Finland as being insulated from such events. I am sorry your family lost a member to the horrors of war, but it is nice that you realize what a high price tag independence carries. Your family is honored for its contribution.
Great thread! Thank you to all the vets who have served in all of the armed forces, in wars or peacetime. And thank you to all their families that had to keep the home fires burning alone while they were away. I owe my freedom to you all.
My father was in the Merchant Marines, who were never acknowledged for the role they played in the war till quite recently, He had already passed away when their efforts in the war were recognized.
My Father was a chaplin in the Army. He served in China, Japan and Okinawa (spelling?) He got hit by shrapnel in China and we still have the piece that hit him. Only scratched him so he was lucky. Lani
My father was a doughboy in WW1. He passed away when he was in his early 70's. He'd be 106 if he were alive today!
My dad was a Staff Sargeant in the Navy during WWII, and served aboard a submarine in the Pacific Ocean off the Phillapines. He passed away in 1978, and would have been 77 years old now.
