Rain! I don't believe it!

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

We're actually getting rain! Not much yet ~ just a few big hard drops ~ not even enough to settle the dust. I hope it keeps up and gets stronger! Aimee, are you getting any rain out of this storm? Gosh, it's been so long it seems since we've had any rain ~ I think I'll go outside and watch the light show for a while.

BTW, Spicewood's about 3/4" to the west of Austin on this map. Georgetown's about that far north of Austin.

Well, it passed us right on by and only dropped a smidgen. :-( But it was enough to settle the dust after all! I hope you fared better, Aimee.

If only I knew how, I would very gladly send you some of ours! I am sure all of us midwesterners would! But of course, our dry season is coming soon!

Lupinelover, just get the Queen Gas Bag over there, point her south and let her rip! LOLOLOLOL! (Who is the Queen Gas Bag now? I think Louisa was worried for a while, but tiG was watching behind her rather closely for any others closing in on her.)

Heard the thunder, saw the lightening and jumped out of bed hoping... but nary a drop here in South Austin, Texas...

I was puting away, when I heard thunder, a long, low rumble, so down the stairs I fled, grinning to myself and happily anticipating the wet stuff. Down the hall, through the kitchen, through the new porch full of cats, out the new back door onto the path, where I almost got wet! Okay, it rained, but not really. Oh, we had thunder, the big rumbling kind, for hours, and lightning, oh, yes, plenty of stuff to make me shut down the puter. And the top film of dust in the yard was sort of dampened. My rain gauge is down because that section of fence is gone to allow me to reshape the walk, so I set a 39 ounce Folger's coffee can on the walk to get an idea of how much it had rained. Went out and checked it Sunday morning, and the bottom of that can wasn't even covered. Ah, but there were results. On Sunday, I walked out to survey my queendom, and every step I took proved to be into a swarm of furious fire ants. They were swarming all over the rocks that border the bed in the southeast lawn, all over the east path, all over the front path, all over the -- oh, forget it, I was soon covered with the nasty little beasties, and couldn't have told you for sure where I was. They were up my back, on my neck, on the backs of my legs, and all were clearly looking for a fight. Like I ordered the rain! Okay, I did. And I am ordering more, just for their nasty attitude. I was forced to retreat to the safety of the house, as I couldn't walk anywhere without stepping into a pile of those critters. So I am just waiting for them to rebuild their little mounds, and I shall attack them with a vengeance, armed with Orthene. I tried, Folks, but it's just not possible to deal with the mosquitoes, giant grasshoppers and fireants all at once. I can't enjoy any aspect of the garden until at least one of them is banished. We could have more rain about mid-week, so I will have to apply poison stuff at least twice this week. I shall.

Oh, Aimee, don't feel bad about resorting to poisons on those little evil $%#&@*$s! I try to be as organic as I can, but still would resort to chemical poisons if I had a fire ant problem so bad that I couldn't even get to my garden, much less enjoy it! I've been lucky in that I don't have them that bad on my place, but I've seen two and three feet tall nests in other places. I feel for you!
