Shoes?

Cleveland, OH(Zone 5b)

Now that the weather has gotten a bit better and I am working ing the garden, I am wondering what kind of shoes are best to wear while working in the dirt/mud? What does everyone wear?

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

I just wear some old tennis shoes

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Old sandles, here. I am not a shoe person anyway so if I am on my knee's pulling weeds/digging etc the sandles come off and only put them back on when I am up walking around.

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

I cut the back from deck shoes and they just slip on and off easily,(like mule house slippers.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I'm a no shoes person myself.I only wear them if my feet are in immediate danger...or I have to go into town!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

i think they call them garden rubbers???? oh well, maybe if i have some more coffee i'll think of the right name, lol

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

old tennis shoes.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm a barefoot person myself! I do wear old tennies to cut the grass because it is so hard to scrub the green off my feet. LOL My old favorites were some Keds canvas clogs wih heavy rubber bottoms. Wore them out. :( I was at Target the other day, and they are now selling those rubber garden clogs. I think they were $20.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I got the rubber clogs, and they are sooooo uncomfortable. If I could cut my big toe off, they'd probably be okay. I use them to slip on and off when I'm already inside and have my tennies off, but I use my shovel too much to wear them or go barefoot. btw, got them at Garden Ridge for 12.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I bought a pair of rubber clogs two summers ago, when Target did a close-out (got 'em for $7 or so) - they're not the most comfortable shoe, but they are nice when you have to walk out across the lawn early in the morning (wahhh - my feet get cold when they're wet :)

Other than that, I am either barefoot or old tennies. This is kind of like the gloves voting booth question: the older I get, the more I tend to wear covering for hands and feet. I'm tired of having inch-thick callouses on my heels. And after getting that last tetanus booster, I'm not in any hurry to need another one, LOL.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Barefoot or once in a while those socks with grippers on bottom.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

tennis shoes here. I dont like the thought that I might step on a slimy slug, squishing thru my toes, yikes. Or any other critter for that matter.....

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Barefoot is my preference! But we put pine bark mulch in between the garden beds and some of the big chunks are rather hard on the feet. I bought some simple slide-on shoes from Wal-Mart, about $7 a pair. Kenny calls them my "Jesus shoes" ~ they're just a sole with two wide straps of leather across the top and buckles on each strap. I wear them all over the place. They're easy to hose mud right out of if it gets in between my toes. And they're easy to shuck if I get fire ants on my feet! Don't have to take off shoes and socks to get to the little $%#&*$#s!

Cleveland, OH(Zone 5b)

Wow! Alot of good input. Thanx everyone! I like the idea of just slipping into slide on shoes, but I'm kinda klutzy and have a tendency to slip and slide. I like tennis shoes, but I seem to run in and out of the house alot and hate to tie, and untie. I also hate it when dirt/stones get into the shoes and it feels like I'm in a Chinese torture when I walk. Oh well, I'm sure I'll find a happy medium. Until then, it's tennies.

Salem, OR(Zone 8a)

Well, being phobic about snakes, I wear boots - BIG BLACK BOOTS. No matter the weather! Actually, part of the year I wear old worn out canvas deck shoes, which I have loosened the laces on so much they can be put on and off without bending over. I also like a pair of rubber and leather "duck" boots I have. No laces, short, but water proof. And many times one can find me strolling about the garden in the morning in my rubber soled slippers. DH goes barefoot as much as possible. I'm with go-vols, the older I get the more I wear. ;-)

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I wear vinyl thong sandals when I am just walking around looking at stuff, but you know that never lasts long. So I have some real wallowy old tennis shoes, with huge toe boxes, that I wear for heavy work. Or I might wear a pair of sandals with two straps that velcro across the foot. Then I have the thongs at the door so I can slip out of the dirty shoes and into something to go inside. Only takes a second. But like Wingnut, I need something I can hose down and get out of fast when I find ants swarming my legs and feet. And tennis shoes are so bad about collecting burs and spear grass in the strings if I walk near them.

Cape May Court House, NJ(Zone 7a)

I only wear Birkinstock's!!!! Work play or gardening!!! So comfy would not wear anything else!!!!
sue

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Ok Aimee, just as long as you wear the "thongs" on your feet and no where else hee hee J/K ya!!

Cleveland, OH(Zone 5b)

Good one Mollybee! I can just picture all of us gardeners wearing thongs, not on our feet!!! We could start a trend! LOL, LOL

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

I do the barefoot deal but have a pair of canvas ones that just slip on that I put on when I need shoes. Ok Mollybee and Celia count me out on the thong trend. lol

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

ROFLOL!! Even if I did wear one "not on my feet" you'd never be able to see it! LOL none for me thanks!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

When I'm digging, I wear a big thick-soled pair of work shoes I found at Value City locally. The soles keep the edge of the shovel from digging into my feet!

When just puttering, I have a pair of vinyl flats with sort of cushiony soles; I started wearing them outside to walk the dogs in the yard early this spring, and found them comfy and easy to slip on and off. They are a bit too wide to look nice with trouser socks or nylons, anyway, and I figured out it's worked far better to use them for everyday garden stuff.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh, UCK! Butt floss underwear! NOT for me, either! All my life I've been fighting to keep my undies out of there ~ I'm SURE not gonna' put some in there on purpose!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Wingnut, you are too much! Floss, huh? Well, I was all for the bikini trend and hiphuggers in the 70s, but thongs still belong on feet. My DD has "other" thongs that cost an arm and a leg, and I can't understand why, since they are essentially two strings. I am about to graduate to those soft knit bloomers my grannies wore, can't stand anything that binds or gets too close. So you can drop by anytime, and you might catch me out in the garden with a cup of coffee and wearing a nightie or just a long shirt, but everything shocking will be concealed. I have often wondered what the motorists can see from the state highway, and what they say when this old woman is out there in her granny gown in the middle of winter.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Yep, Aimee ~ the difference probably is that hiphuggers and bikinis are comfortable. Like granny underwear! I love them! I'm like you, though ~ if it's too constricting, I'll just go without (Big Sis calls that "going commando" ;-P!). But everything's covered here, too! One way to tell if those highway motorists can see you is to look for the same car going by again and again. ;-)

It is wild the prices they charge for 4 cents worth of fabric, ain't it?! My granny panties are six for $4 ~ what's that, 65 cents or so a pair? And you could make 12 pairs of those butt floss undies out of one pair of them! Disgraceful! LOL!

Not going to even say what knickers I wear while gardening ;)

I wear boots to garden in, no way will you get my feet into sandals without me stubbing my toes or dropping something heavy on them.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Baa, just like you to call them knickers! Of course, the ones Wingnut is referring to are more aptly called, and I love this, butt floss! I am with you on the injuries, and should get some substantial boots. Like steel toed! I often think the ideal footwear for me would be smooth leather boots up to my hips, to avoid those clinging seeds and sticky leaves in the pastures where the best wildflowers grow. But when a fire ant finds its way down to my toes, what am I going to do???

Is 'knickers' too twee? I could have said skiddies or kegs but I'm far too polite LOL.

I don't have a fire ant problem, we have vamipre, psycho ants but they aren't partial to climbing in boots. When on the farm I did begin to use bootlaces that didn't need tying so I could slip off my boots quickly but they didn't flop on my feet either. Excellent invention but not one that stayed the course sadly.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Getting back in my chair now after LOL at Aimee and Wingnut! you too are too funny!! I am no where close to being a granny, but I do wear both kinds of granny's LOL.
Aimee, you are lucky to be able to walk the garden with your granny gown on, but I live on a main street and there is nooo way I could get away with it..I even feel like I am being looked at when I am fully dressed...its like they have never seen anyone out in their yard before!!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, Mollybee, I did it when I lived in town, too! I figure I am not being bold, as I am fully covered, and how do they know it's not my patio dress? Well, no one has accused me of being normal in a long time. And all modesty went out the window long ago, so I am free to be that weird old lady.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

LOL yea but if I done it I would be considered the "Ho that lives on Rockmart Rd" LOL The town I live in is much too little, and therefore everyone would know about me! LOL I too haven't been normal in years!!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Baa, I love "Twee!"

Feeding Hills, MA(Zone 5a)

This thread is a hoot! I wear my old leather sneakers when I am doing digging or down by the brook and the rest of the time I wear these soft canvas shoes I buy at Walmart for $4 a pair. They get so dirty I can just throw them out when they are beyond recognition..:*)

My husband goes nuts but I have been known to wear flannel pants with elastic waist....we ued to call them pajama bottems in the yard to garden with a tshirt. I could care less what the neighbors think!

Salem, OR(Zone 8a)

OH! OH! that's what I wear!! Jammies!! As a matter of fact, if you look at my member page, you will be graced with the unforgetable vison of me in my plaid flannel PJ top, hoe (not ho ;->) in hand! Sometimes I put on sweats on the bottom (NO nickers under jammies, Baa!) and sometimes not. We live in the country, but we still have a couple neighbors that could be in sight. If I'm in my yard, I could care less, and just wear the jammies and my duck boots. If I have to walk to the mailbox, I put on the sweats so it sort of looks like I MIGHT have real clothes on!

Pioneer, CA

Birkenstock garden shoes are great. I wear those or old tennies that I can no longer wear for anything else. Other then that, it's shorts or jeans. Thats about all I wear anytime anyway, I just keep the "good ones" for non gardening things. Makes life much easier, too many years of working in heels and dresses. YUK

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

SPEAKING OF WEARING jAMMIES IN THE GARDEN.. I WAS AT THE FLEA MARKET TODAY AND SAW SOME MEN BOXER SHORTS. I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT THEM TOO!EXCEPT THEY WERE SM IN THE WAIST AND BIG IN THE LEGSAND I WASN'T SURE I COULD GET THEM PULLED OVER MY BUTT. THEY WERE IN REALLY NICE PRINTS. COWBOYS,STEELERS ETC SPORTS PATTERNS.BUT WASN'T THAT NOTICABLE AS UNDERWEAR. LOOKED LIKE LADIES SHORTS TO ME.THE PRICE WAS RIGHT ..$4.00 PR.(NEW)PROBABLY IRREGULARS AS SO MUCH OF FLEA MARKET STUFF IS.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

tink, I have bought things like that! Sometimes they are really comfortable, others are not. It mainly depends on whether they have the "diaper allowance" in the back. Best not. And I wear them as I would any of my shorts, with a shirt tail hanging out. They don't bind as much as my regular shorts, and the material is softer.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Tink, I love to wear the boxers around here. They come two different ways, with the *pocket* in the front and without. I buy any I can find cheap enough as long as they don't have the bottomless pocket in the front. LOL

Any yes, I wear them outside, along with an oversized tee shirt, or I just wear my long jammie nightgown, and wanna know a secret about me? I HATE wearing a bra and as soon as I get home, it's the first thing to go in the hamper. I take the strangler off even before shoes.

You all learned more about me than you ever wanted to know didn't you? Aren't you glad I can't sleep tonight? LOL
