This past two months I've had numerous emails asking if I'd like to join other gardening forums. They aren't personalised emails so I assume they aren't targeting me personally. What I'd like to know is how they have this email address. All my gardening stuff is done on a specific e address except DG. It's the e address I'm using at DG (and for non gardening things)they are writing to me on, so how have they got to me?
Are other people getting these too?
Anybody else?
noone's sent any to me Baa.
Hope you get to the bottom of this
I havent been deluged by any e-mails recently, I hope you can figure out how they are tapping into your address....
none here either except for the ones that I'm a member of
no, I haven't gotten any emails like that. So sorry you are getting bothered.
Why do you open emails if you don;t know who sent it?No no no!!!
I haven't had any of these eMails, but in all honesty Mingsmimi, if any eMail was on my list with gardening, or any other subject to which I subscribe, I would open it.
I've opened mail from members of DG not knowing that they were members, or whoever they were until I opened the eMail, since I don't know all of their eMail names. I'm not worried since we were getting porn mail on my son's eMail's name(although I have a parent watch on his connection), until I sent one back to them with F*** O** in very large, fat, and dark red lettering.
If I pick up a virus, then I'll set my Norton watch-dog after it, which is allowed out whenever I think there is something not right with the system.
I didn't know, for example, our very own Aimée's adress, but I still opened the eMail. Why should I be terrorised by these nuts (NO, not Aimée ;)). If I see that the eMail is just a pile of [deleted], then I'll bin it. I've got pretty good at binning eMail without opening it... mortgages, save money etc... but when something is about gardening, other hobbys etc., then I will most certainly open it. Most of them are just adverts, but why should I terrorise myself in thinking that every eMail which comes in has a virus.
I respect your view that one should be more careful, but too much carefulness spoils a wee bit of the game of surfing, doesn't it???
BTW, this is not an attack at you, just my opinion. Please don't take this personally;-)
Honestly!
Wintermoor
I have always gone with the theory. if you open up email that you don;t know who sent it. you are opening up alot of troubles. What ever. good luck!
Thanks for your answers everyone! I must be on a list somewhere, maybe a well meaning friend put my name up?
Mimi
I don't open up any attachments (which is how the main viri gets passed on) unless I'm sure of the person who sends it. Most people send me a quick mail telling they are sending me an email with an attachment which is much appreciated. I have a very good virus detection programme and all in all I am pretty careful.
But I agree with Wintermoor, I've been on the net for a few years now, if I didn't open up emails I'd never have met so many wonderful people.
If I write to someone here I usually put DG somewhere in the subject line when I contact someone I don't know via email. Not everyone does and I'm sure I've forgotten to do that on occasion.
Thanks for your concern though :)
I got one this morning that said the antigen for the Klez virus that my computer has has been found. My computer doesn't have the Klez virus because my Norton has caught it everytime it's come in. Makes me wonder if those trying to sell me the antigen for a virus that they allegedly know I have might not be the same people sending it my way 4 times a day...
Kathleen - I got one a couple weeks ago that said it was a fix for a virus -- of course, I wasn't about to click on an executable attachment! And Norton caught it right as it was downloadng from my mail server, too.
I have Norton enabled, but my ISP does a marvelous job of intercepting bad stuff, so several times this week, I received a message from the Postmaster there, informing me I had been sent a virus, two different ones. ISP also catches spam. Still, like GW, I am not about to open exe things. And if someone sends me those little cute things I need to click on a hyperlink to see, I never see them, as that action sends my puter into a tailspin. Barry, I forgot you didn't know my middle name! I always think I am instantly recognizable to DG members because I use my real name, but there is the matter of my user name for ISP. Amazing Grace, you know.
It JUST happened to me!! just now!!!!! oh my! I have changed my emails addy a few weeks ago. And Someone wrote me with the title Do they need full sun!!!! To my other emal addy that I don;t even get DG tings to. Something is going on. I just trashed it. somehow. people are reading and finding out email addresses. Old ones at that.

If any of your gardening friends have ever forwarded a joke or article to you and others, listing the recipients' e-mail addresses in the TO field, your address has probably gotten out to others. That's why it's important to use Blind CC when sending to groups, and to delete the header information showing all the previous e-mail addresses the forward went to before it got to you.
