This weather is really something. I was sick this am when I saw my sun garden especially the dracunculas really withered from the frost. They say it is coming again tonight. Unfortunately the gardens have gotten too large to protect. I hope it isn't the disaster it appears to be right now.
Uh Oh!
Haighr, hope it's not bad. I hate it when a surprise late frost sneaks up on us. We had a little damage at the green house the other day, just in spots.
Haighr I am so sorry to hear about your little green babies. This sure has been one heck of a weird spring! Hoping they recover!
sorry to hear old drac got cold-I hope you dont get any more
I think we are past that now-but one never knows!!!!
Good luck tonight!
Thanks for all the good luck wishes. I wish I could throw a big tent over everything, but the gardens have gotten too large to protect everything. Just keep my fingers crossed for this eve.
By the way, does it help to water everything before a frost?
Haighr, I posted on the other thread about Remay row covers, comes in 9ft X 100ft rolls and is lightweight and inexpensive.
Haighr, If you get a light frost mist them with the hose early in the morning before the sun hits them. It does help. Our weather is supposed to be warm all this week with night temps in the 40's. Still so afraid of putting anything out.
Just talked to DH. I TOLD him to cover the tender marigolds last night. We had a light frost at the green house, but not here. The salvia had some damage too, but we will just cut the tops off and plant them in one of the display beds.
Thanks for the great info all. Where do I buy those Calalily the rolls of stuff?
By this afternoon all looked okay except for the 6 yr.old Hibiscus (one red and one white). The leaves at the tops of the new sprouts were burned black. Do you think they will survive?
Just need to get through another night of the 40's not as bad as last nights 31. Brought all back in again that I could Jasmine, eucalyptus, begonias and potted dahlias. I hope this is soon over for the WINTER that we didn't have.
I'm so sorry for all of you who have received such a late frost. We lucked out and didn't get any this past week. However, today, the winds are terrible. The State Patrol is even asking people not to travel on the Interstate. There are parts of Nebraska that are extremely dry and the dust from the fields is causing "black outs". Today there was a 10 vehicle collision on the Interstate and two people were killed because of low visibility.
Boy!! We're all having terrible weather this spring, Sunday and yesterday it snowed here, about 3 inches. Really is a pain.I hurried to the garden and covered up everything I could with row cover and some 5 gal bottles (with the bottoms cut off). Had the tomatoes in Walls of Water so they're fine.I'm going to hunt for the bottles all summer at garage sales because they are really great. I heard that next year is another El Nino, that isn't good news. Oh well---- maybe next week the weather will be wonderful ,hope so.
I hope it gets better for all of you
You can generally get row cover from nursury supply or possibly the garden centers of Walmart etc. I got mine years ago from Gardener's Supply catalog.
We have a Farmer's Co-Op here that we buy from. A farm supply store would have the best price. These are spun fiber and very light weight. You can even leave them on for several days because they let light and air in, but not frost. They are a white color so your plants won't sunburn.
Thanks again, I will have some by the weekend and hope I don't have to use it until next year, but who knows!
Oh, I hope it doesn't frost too bad! Yes, it does help to water everything before a frost. I hope all is well!
