That is just wonderful Dori. What fun!!!! Isn't it a great feeling when you can outsmart the system and save things that would be thrown away? In our throw away society it is still a practice with me to "waste not - want not." I just wish more people would practice this and our city dumps wouldn't be filled to overflowing and they wouldn't have to always be acquiring more land to serve that purpose...... There is always some poor neighborhood protesting having a new dump in their area. They don't want the rats, the traffic of the garbage trucks driving past all the time, etc. Some cities have to transport their trash long distances to dumps which costs the taxpayers through the teeth and yet the govt.in many cities including mine doesn't seem concerned with trying more inventive ways to get people to recycle.

=) I am glad you got some plants from dumpster and Me and DH went by Lowe's and asked the manager to make sure let us to have plants from dumpster and he allow us and we got many too so some of not good had to throw it away.

Ellen I agree-its not like we are breaking into the closed dumpsters. The landfills are filling up.
he just tallied up the grapes and there are 4 different kinds and about 20 plants-Im going out to plant them!!!
oh spin dance jump skip spin-dizzy-happpy!!!
have a great day everyone!!! i am!!!!!! =]

Oh Happy Day!!! Have fun Dori! Question again, are you having to skip Roundup?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Years ago I worked at Walmart in customer service(what a joke). We would break or tear up stuff before it was thrown in the dumpster just so no one could use it. I thought that was a shame.

Ellen i cant make the round up this year! so NO im not going to be there-no surprise visits!!!=(

our Wal-Mart has a trash compactor and they compact everything. You can't even get near their dumpster. Around here no one will give you anything. Went to the nursery to see if I could get some 3" used plastic pots so I can get some starts ready for some people that I work with (mental health clients) and I had to pay 3cents per pot. That's not much and I bought some but geez, they sure a stingy, aren't they......LOL

anyways, I'm very happy for you. That's a great find!!!

there is a funeral home at the end of my street. We used to get the arrangements that were left in dumpster which no one wanted. YOU hit the jackpot!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Oh Dori! What a wonderful find! I am so happy for you. Your yard is going to be stuffed after planting all those great things. The places around here are starting to lock their dumpsters, because some kids think it's great fun to throw the garbage out all over the place. :( DH and I used to go once or twice a week to a certain store that left lots of good things for us, but they've since closed.

Neat that reminds me i need to be checking our area stores!

Dori, I am so disapointed to find that you aren't going to make Roundup!!! Bummer!!! I know those things happen butit is just a shame you won't be there. Boo Hoo!!1

Reading this one made me remember as a child how I used to go to our local gardens, which were just over the railway bridge. We used to play in the bushes, you now the sort of things, cowboys, hide and seek ! Then I discovered the ,what must have been their compost heap, and sometimes it's have loads of bedding plants dumped there, polyanthas, wall flowers. We used to think it was Christmas, we'd struggle home with all these plants in our arms, it was like an Aladins cave to us.I remember taking some some irises home once, being so chuffed, our garden used to have all sorts of things put in.We got chased off once by the gardener, who discovered us raiding the heap ! Scared the pants off me,mind you ,it didn't stop us going back ! it just made it more exciting :-)

Sueone, what exciting memories. Your story is just one of the many things that remind me of why I don't like to compost perfectly good excess plants and work very hard at sharing them with others even though it takes a lot of time potting them, entertaining folks who come to get my extras, etc.

Dori, you did great!!! what fun ....

Dori, I am so glad that you got the plants, our local stores are being very diligent about not letting DD- they get "credit" for lost plants--now how can it make a difference if it gets lost in the town dump or in my yard.
NEAT news, some of you may remember that I was disappointed that I did not have the chance to DD at my sister's place of work when I went out East to the wedding (no time) She did it for me before coming out to my nephew's graduation and brought me 3 different kinds of orchids (paph, oncidium (sp?) and one that says lady slipper--will have to read up.
What a wonderful treasure and the plants are nice too.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

My sis was up for the weekend and she saw all the neat stuff-she was so excited to go home and check out the local dumpsters! My gf wants me to take her now too! I think its fun to see what treasures are in there!
Laddy slippers are a great flower-Im hoping to get some of those soon!
We planted and planted yesterday as the snow fell! I guess the frost was good for something! ;)
