Pond disaster!!

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

We woke up this morning to look out the upstairs window and Jim freaking out running down the stairs, flying outside and flopping the water hose into the pond. Something, somehow happened and the pond was just about empty, there was a little bit of muddy water and the fish were flopping like mad. We only lost one bottom feeder though and the others survived. Funny thing is, this liner was one of the heavy pond liners and last year we had a cheap, blue odd lots tarp that lasted all summer long. So needless to say, I ran to Odd Lots to buy another cheap liner. So now I'm out there trying to fix it. Had to dig all the plants up around it, bail the water out that we had put back in and take the liner up. It's probably going to take me until late tonight to fix it all and get it back to where it looks decent. Bad thing is, I have to take so many breaks because my hands and feet cramp really bad when I'm working out there :(

Just wanted to share my day

Oh, Susan, I am so very sorry. Good thing you caught it when you did. I have found my fish mud swimming several times, and it's a terrible experience. I always wanted one of those "good" rubber liners, but used .6 mil plastic instead. Now I think maybe I wasn't so unfortunate after all. Good luck, I know it will just about cripple you doing all that work non-stop.

Sorry about the pond.

God Bless you Lady! I have had the same thing happen twice but never lost any fish from that...our filter had leaked out one time and wind blew off the pump hose another time!It is hard and steady work too!

I am huffing and puffing today too! I bought 2 koi a couple weeks ago and were infested with parasites and I didn't quarantine them and dumped them into my pond with my 4 yr old (3 lbs)fish and the new ones died and 1 of my bigger koi died and some of my small fish have been dying...I have bought everything under the sun to try to save them and have lost about 8 fish so far...I have been under the advice of a doctor of koi about a week now and he has figured out what is wrong...

Anyway, I had to change 70% of water today which is about 2300 gallons and trying to get a bog garden going too! Needless to say I sympathize with you...these ponds can be a headache but well worth the hard work!

Tomorrow I will have to wade in pond and dip out yuck! YUCK!!! Clorox bath for me tomorrow nite!

Hope you don't get too tired! I'm Pooped!

Oh my.........my pond disaster doesn't sound so bad now. I hope all goes well Rebecca. I posted a pic in the photo forum of how far I actually got today. That was after tearing the old liner out, moving the dirt, digging up the plants and putting everything back in after the new liner went in. It's not done, but I got about 75% of it done today but I sure was beat and in allot of pain a few times where my hands cramped and I couldn't move them for awhile. I also hit my nuckle by my thumb a few times with the hammer trying to get the tarp staked into the ground :(

Oh Susan, that's terrible! Did you find where the other liner was leaking? Hope everything gets better now.

no, never bothered with going through to find the leak, I just tossed it. It was enough work without finding a hole.......LOL

Rebecca and Susan, you have my heartfelt sympathies. This is so like our experiences with pond building back in the 70s. The kids and I started out with a kiddie pool in a hole, then DS decided to make a freeform concrete basin, using just his hands. Don't try it, you will always have leaks! Poor kid worked himself to a frazzle on that pond. Now he lives there with DIL, and has built a huge waterfall that appears to flow from under the neighbor's fence, which is on a lot about 3' higher than ours, and it flows down a shallow concrete path to the original location. Once you build a pond, you can't stop!
