When your children were small, you probably spent it enjoying their gifts of handprinted art work, handmade breakfast in bed, and generally being Mom, making sure to show the proper appreciation for each treasure and each loving act. Now, many of us are older and have grandchildren, so our own children are doing that, and we get a card, maybe a gift, some flowers from a florist. Some families go out to eat together. Some just visit and take a gift. My family has never been conventional, and we think nothing of giving someone a truck load of soil or a case of pots for a gift. A short few years ago, my oldest son and his wife gave me a 21 speed bicycle for Mother's Day, with the string attached that I must ride the MS150, a benefit ride from Houston to Austin which takes two days and the riders must line up sponsors. Another year, the same son had heard my requests for cuttings from various plants I had put into the gardens where he now lives, and he loaded up a trunk full of them and delivered them. My DIL, of course, buys me the most wonderful sleepwear and loungewear and luxury bath items. But usually, I am alone for most of the big day, as the kids visit inlaws. I like that they feel okay about that. This year, I am going to the home of an elderly friend, who is about my mother's age, and planting vines and other flowering plants in her large yard. She lost a lot of her plants this past winter, and it depresses her a little. Many had been there for 40 years, so I told her they went to plant heaven after a long and useful life, and it's time to bring in some new ones. We will share a Mother's Day lunch of whatever happens to be handy. What will you be doing?
How are you spending Mother's Day?
Hi Aimee and All!
I will be spending my Mother's Day with the most Fantastic Mother-in-Law on earth! My mom passed away whenever I was 17, In 1989, and I am so fortunate to have such a Kind and Considerate MIL that my DH and I are going to her home (2 1/2 hrs away from us) to spend the day w/her. She is A beautiful Spanish Lady, who is so Classy and Gorgeous. She looks like a Spanish Doll! She normally cooks Tamales and tons of food, but this time I am taking a Bottom Round Roast w/Potatoes and Baby Carrots and all the fixins. I do not want her to lift a finger, because she is one mother who is certainly deserving of a pampered Day, and that is just what I am gonna do for her. I also am taking her A Cary Grant Hyvrid Tea rose (huge bloomers is all she will settle for) and an Olympiad-(red and huge blooms as well.) Along w/ a wire CoCo Liner hanging Basket with A verigated Sweet potato vine and snap dragons, Lilac Mist Wave petunia's, and Salvia in it!! I made it myself and if I can say it, I think it is Gorgeous!! She is the only Mother I have, since I am not very close w/my Step Mom and I'll be helping to plant her roses along with a few Brugs I am taking along for her too!!! She is one of my Favorite People on this Earth. And, I'll also take a rose and trellis to another special mom. My sister's Mother-in-Law. She and I are ther best of Friends!! Since I am not a Mommy yet, I will make it as special of a day for these 2 as possible! Even though neither of them are my Mother, it is still so comforting to buy for someone you love so Dearly and knowing how much they really appreciate what we give them and it just warms my Heart. And makes what could be a sad day for me, a Happy and Loving day!! That is what all I'll be doing and BTW, Happy Mother's Day to all the Mom's!!!!
Thanks and Happy Mother's Day to all of You Super Mom's!!!
Hope to be one myself in the near future! Pray for me!
Traci S
Thanks,
Traciii S
Traci, how nice for everyone concerned! I don't like to commercialize holidays, and I think doing things like you plan helps to keep the meaning intact. It's just so nice when you can love those people who come into your life through various associations, and so fortunate when they are deserving of it. And many people in the world tell me I am the mother they would have chosen, so it really isn't limited to one woman. We often have a choice of adding a wonderful person in a capacity they weren't born into. You and they are fortunate! Good luck, I know you will be a supermom!
We, my sister and I, will drive down to Frankfurt (100km) to put flowers on Moms grave. Its the first Mothers Day after her death. When she was still alive, it was a celebration day and we all came together on her place. Now, she is gone, it will be a remembrance day.
My own Mothers Day does not exist anymore. It was my own decision.
To all of you a happy Mothers Day with your DHs, kids and grandchildren.

Monika, I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. I hope your day of remembrance holds a sweetness for you and your sister, and that you can feel the closeness of guardian angels on your drive. Your mother is watching her girls with a smile on her face. Hugs to you both.
Will be working out in the yard if it's dry enough. Still have more rain coming in Sunday. We have already gotten close to 6 inches this past week. Can't do much in the mud.
Mother's Day is just another day, like any other day for me.
Here's wishing all you other mom's out there a Very Happy Mother's Day.
Aimee how nice that was to walk down your memory lane!! As kids we used to go to the bluebell woods and pick flowers for mum leaving dad at home to cook up one of his memorable meals, usually lamb, mint sauce and all the trimmings!! Mum loved lamb and still does!! In fact, I cooked her that same meal when we visited her last year!! We would also make her little presents out of doilies and lavender. The cards were also hand made and we would stick flowers on them too. As for my Mother's Day!! Maybe a visit to Monticello or the Arboretum in Richmond. I did receive a lovely surprise from my son - a gift voucher to spend at Wayside Gardens!!! Happy Mothers Day!!
Today we are going to surprise my mom for her early birthday and Mother day. (2 1/2 hours to drive). There's a party that Mom doesn't know. All my sisters and brothers will be there even all her grandchildren also. SHe will be surprise. She will be 70. Her birthday is on 14th. Oh I can't wait to go see her.. I better get off and get dress and ready to leave.....
Don't really have anything planned for sure, except I know I'll be working that afternoon and evening! Will probably go visit my mom and maybe have lunch together. Other than that, who knows? ;-)
the kids are here and one of the grocery stores are giving away a carnation to each mother who comes in today and is letting the kids decorate a free cake for mother's day so that's what we are doing today. Other than that, I'll probably get breakfast in bed tomorrow :)
My mom lives 8 and a half hours away so will probably just try to call her and send a ton of mother's day e-mail cards.
Happy Mother's day to all of you!!!!!!!
I am happy that I still have my mom, and both grandmas. I made my mom a card from my own photos, and bought her a small present.. Then tomorrow morning, if I wake up in time, I will go out, and pick some forget-me-nots (she likes them a lot), white anemones, daffodils, and other flowers. :)
I have to work...(sigh)
I am going to Biloxi with my kids and if I win big I'm gonna drive to Texas and kidnap Aimee and bring her to Alabama to live with me....
And if I lose I'm gonna tuck my tail and come on home!
(((REB)))
No, if you lose, drive to Georgetown and cry on my shoulder, and then we can go down to sixth street where all the young people hang out and watch them be excessive, and you will feel better.
LOL...Aimee! The younger folks nowadays 'as we used to think too' think they know it all and us old folks are stupid and don't know anything! Boy, do they have alot to learn!
See, we feel better already, and we don't even know whether you will win or lose. Those younguns are amusing, until I remember I was just like them.
WE will have a BBQ at one of my daughters house...her brother in law is visiting from SC...We will include two neighbors who are now part of our "extended family"....They all call me Jo-Mama anyhow! I already received an early Mother's Day gift...a new garden rake, and a 3-clawed hand trowel!!...OH...and a new nozzle for my water hose...for the back yard plants...it can be set to spray at different force. I love it. Jo
Jo, I think you will have a great time tomorrow. It sounds like something made for you.
Sis and everyone else - I hope the weather is kind to you today!!! Have a wonderful day!!
Sis, that sounds like a good day to me! You and Louisa have a wonderful day, and I know at least part of it will be spent in some form of gardening activity.
I escaped! I left the "kids" (including the spouse),went to Home Depot and spent 3 hours wandering around the gardening & outdoor area.... BY MYSELF! Heavenly! Anyone with small children know what I mean.
Aimee: Your memories of Mothers day are something out of a Norman Rockwell painting :) I don't know about other mothers but I wish in reality it was still so. I don't know anyone who has mothers days like that, although I know of many mothers that wish they did. My mother and both grandmas (and grandpas) are gone to heaven....
TraciS: You are very blessed! Sounds wonderful, I'm envious!
You mean getting a bicycle? Or getting breakfast in bed and some home made hand prints? Hey, one Christmas, the kids got a male friend to buy me a case of a scotch I liked, they wrapped it and stood by to watch their mother test the first bottle on Christmas morning. As I said, we weren't traditional or conventional. So Mother's Day was widely varied through the years, but always the kids observed it in some fashion. On Mother's Day 1979, my precious daughter was in intensive care on life support, and the Catholic sister who was hospital administrator bent the rules to let me stay in there with her around the clock. Daughter conspired with older daughter to buy me a patio type recliner so I would have a place to rest. It could be folded up and tucked under the bed when medical procedures forced me to go outside the cubicle. That was my MD gift, and totally appropriate for the circumstances. I doubt that many mothers have the apple pie traditions, or ever did, but once in a great smile, it happens.
My husband took me on a overnight stay at a Bed and Breakfast. We got up Sunday morning and drove home. One of my daughters stopped by with the grandchildren with gifts and hugs and then we took my Mother out to dinner. She loves to garden as much as I do, so I have her a pretty garden stake and a gift certificate for the nursery. I went to buy the plant for her and then couldn't remember what kind of Clematis it was that she wanted, so that was the best way to do it. My mom is my very best friend. I can't think of anyone other than my husband that I could rather spend my free time with.
jerodsmom, you are lucky, and so is your mom! It sounds like such a good way to have spent the day, or was it days? Romantic getaway with your sweetie, visit with your daughter, hugs from the grands, smiles and hugs from Mother, it just don't get no better 'n that!
DD that lives here had us over and dsil grilled steaks and also had fresh shrimp, calamari, flounder, orange roughy, scallops, corn on the cob, cole slaw, vanilla bean ice cream, brownies. It was wonderful. Both out of town daughters called and youngest dd sent a "Calgon take me away" package with lots of goodies. We had Ohio friends over the week end and they left Sunday morning. It was a great day. I called my dear mother and talked with her.
Your right Aimee, it doesn't get any better than
that.
Patricia
