May I Cry???

Raphine, VA(Zone 6b)

Please forgive this whine but I just have to get it off my chest.....
Our neighbors split and he has a new girlfriend living there and they have four dogs, one that is a puppy and isn't restricted to doing anything it wants.
Well I have the hardest time growing Clematis Vines and I finally had a two year old on my privacy fence going to bloom the most beautiful Red....
they let the dog go where it pleases and today I ran it off my little plants three time and when I went my walk-about, my clematis is broke right at the ground and wilted, AHHHH !!!
Now if I say anyting it will start a war knowing her so I must suck it up and see what's next to die....
Thank you for letting me cry....

OH Dear! I know how you feel...I bought 2 Clematis this year and as soon as I planted them outd=sie they died dead!! Not their fault I'm sure...but mine...I had a wirre fence around them so I know it wasn't rabbits.

Isn't there something you can spray around to repell dogs?

There is a dog & cat repellent that is in granule form. It's made by GreenLight. However you do have to reapply if it gets
wet or rains.

I'm going to use some pepper spray tomorrow but with the storms it just washes it off.
I have so many trees, and new baby plants I just planted today and the dog pee will surely kill it.
The only way I got this one to grow was to pile up composted manure and mulch over it and pray alot, lol.

Is there no leash law where you live???If she gets her panties in a wad, so be it, but you can't live with this forever. If that puppy isn't restrained now, it will never be. Better for her to be upset than you as well as losing your garden. I would show her the broken clematis and other things and tell her this isn't acceptable neighboring. If she continues, file charges. She already isn't a good neighbor, so you have nothing to lose. If you can do it with a smile and keep it peaceful, all the better, but it's up to her to respond appropriately. Your original neighbor might be held responsible, and he might be inspired to insist that she shape up. I hope you get this worked out, it's so stressful to live with such a constant burr under your saddle.

Ravenbuck:

Having suffered bad neighbors, I can certainly understand your disappointment and frustration. I would suggest that you deal directly with the man of the house, since it is no doubt his property. If you confront the girlfriend, she'll likely make a point of getting him on the defensive, and then all negotiating will cease. If he doesn't listen and try to resolve the issue, I'd sue him.

It might serve you well to find out what the laws are concerning pets, and if you live in a subdivided area, what the covenants are. If all else fails, an air rifle that is pumped for a slower velocity load can discourage dogs without injuring them, and there is no sound to alert the neighbors and start a range war.

Oh, can I ever sympathize! A well-aimed hose can do wonders, too. ;)

Having been on both sides of the proverbial fence (I have two dogs that were rambunctious, curious puppies; we didn't let them roam, but they did occasionally escape) I can tell you there ARE leash laws in most counties and/or cities (depends on which jurisdiction you're under.)

And (at least here) neighbors can report violations anonymously. The Animal Control folks will issue a warning if the dogs are restrained when they arrive for an unannounced visit. If the dog is loose, they can (and will) pick them up. $50 first offense, $100 second offense, $200 third offense. It doesn't take long for most folks to realize the cost to bail them out is either too much and they keep them restrained, or let them go up for adoption.

I would call and see if you couldn't report it anonymously; it might save neighborly relations while getting them to keep their dog restrained, which is a reasonable expectation.

You know go_vols the bad thing is that the animal Control person is whom we bought this house from and they were the most strange people I ever met.
His wife was going to have me arrested for harrasment for asking if the inspector could have a gentleman to measure carpet with him, go figure that one.
Anyhoot, I am definitely going over and very calmly tell them that the dog must remain in their year and anything that is damaged will be their responsibility to pay for.
Then we will see what happens...
I'll keep ya posted and thenak you all so much for listening to me whine.

I love dogs (have two) but there are laws about them running loose so I would nicely tell them that. If they don't listen call the humane society to come and get the dog.

Let us know how it goes, RavenBuck. We might all learn something about diplomacy in awkward situations!
