More snow?!?!?

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

What in the world is going on? We got 4 inches of snow again last night, with more predicted for today. It's back down to 27 degrees again too. I am about ready to give up on gardening for this year. My plants had just started to come up, and some of them were looking pretty good, and now this. If it does this to them too many more times, I think I'm going to lose even more of them. I know I've lost some already.

Sorry for whining, I just had to get it out of my system. It's so discouraging.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Oh no, Joan, I'll keep my fingers crossed. How much snow have you had this year, we have been so dry here I am surprised some things survived such a dry, mild winter in MD.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I don't know for sure how much snow we've had total, but it's all been this spring. We had a very open and mild winter. I was working outside in the yard in Feb. in shorts and a tee shirt. Now, when it should be spring, it's winter. The bad part though, is it warms up nicely in between snows and things start to grow, then freeze and get snowed on, then it warms up a bit again... I don't know how many times a plant can go through that before it gives up and dies. All my perennials and bulbs were new last year too, so they aren't fully established yet I don't think. It's so frustrating I feel like giving up, but I think I'll just have a good cry and stomp my feet instead.

Joan, I am not getting the extremes in weather that you are, but I agree that it is discouraging and frustrating.

We finally got decent weather on Saturday and I checked on my poor plants. All of my daylilies are wind-whipped and frozen-- I hope they bounce back quickly.

*sigh*

No snow here, but more rain. I have been so looking forward to getting a garden going. But............. I know that "every cloud has a silver lining" and "just remember, in the winter, far beneath the bitter snow, lies a seed that with the suns warmth, in the spring becomes the Rose" Pretty corny huh? Oh well cheer up everyone, and be glad we don't have tornadoes, floods, or pipe bombs. (and pray we don't!)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hang in there Joan. It will get better and maybe these weather fluctuations will make your plants even stronger.

We are bracing for bad weather for a couple of days, but only spring storms, not snow. Talked to our mailman today and now we can't close our mailbox or he won't deliver the mail. Wonder what will happen when a big semi goes by and blows the bills out of the mailbox. Do you think the guy expecting the payment will believe me when I say a semi blew the bill away? :-)

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Celia, you are so right. It could be much worse. Thanks for reminding me of that. I've spent the whole day in a kind of funk, but I realize it could be much, much worse.

We are supposed to get 8-12 more inches starting tonight and not ending until maybe Thursday? I got disgusted after hearing the 8-12 more inches and didn't listen close enough. They also said on the news that we haven't had this much snow in May since 1991. I will now lift my lower lip up off the floor and bear it, and pray that this doesn't happen again for another 11 years. I will never again, as long as I live in North Dakota, cuss the snow in Nov, Dec, Jan, and Feb, 'cuz it's much easier to handle at that time of year. I can't help thinking of the babies I planted last year and was so excited to see them coming back, and now I can't do anything for them. If this hadn't been my first spring of gardening, and trying to get some more gardens started, I don't think it would be so discouraging, maybe it would be more of a challenge, but it's heartbreaking to wait and wait for the plants to see if they will come back, and then have this happen, over and over.

Okay, maybe I'm still depressed about it, but I'm off to give myself an attitude adjustment.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

oh Joan, so sorry. please don't stay down, spring will come!!!!!!!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Really sorry to hear of your bad weather, Joan. I've been complaining about the late spring, this year, but we haven't had any more snow for quite awhile, just cool weather and frosting at night. These perennials are pretty patient for their summer, so I'm hoping all your yearlings will survive for you.

Crossville, TN

Joan...pack up those seed and bring them down here in sunny Arizona...we'll have a great time planting!! Jo

(Zone 5a)

Joan I am so sorry to hear that your still getting snow, I know how sick you are of it. I do hope that it will stop so that you will get the chance to use that new Mantis. I hope that you can move to a warmer climate but not one that allows you to garden before me lol. Putting all jokes aside, I am keeping my finger crossed for you...good luck hon.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Thanks you all. It's been a very discouraging spring for a new gardener.

Weeze, I may move to Alaska! It sounds better there right now. LOL

Jo, if I send my seeds down there, I'm coming with them!

Wind, it's amazing how much difference one or one and a half zones can make, so, maybe I'll become your neighbor! When ya coming to borrow the mantis?

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Oh my Joan. I feel bad for you. The weather has been crazy this year for sure. I hope all your plants will be ok.

(Zone 5a)

Any day now, I'll be the gentle breeze that you feel. When you see your Mantis floating away just say to yourself...oh it's just Wind borrowing it lol.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Joan, I don't know who has it worse, me or you! The temperature has already hit 100° here, and the grasshoppers are already devouring things. Roadsides are already brown, which usually doesn't happen until the end of June. April was unusually dry, and it looks like May, our wettest month normally, is going to be as dry. One Austin meteorologist, the one who has the best track record for accurate predictions, said it appears we might not make up the 4" rain deficit until September or later. He anticipates water rationing will begin in Austin about June. We have high winds, so the plants are drying out with no replacement moisture. In the pasture, the wildflowers are almost all finished blooming, and it was a sparse year for wildflowers, so the unwanted types of grass are getting really entrenched again. Trying times!

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Weird. Spring has been here very warm and two weeks earlier than usually. What's up with your weather?
