Candian forums?

Alfred, ON(Zone 4b)

First of all hello :-)

Ok here it goes, I have noticed that there is a european forum and plant trading, seed trading and so on. I love all these forums, but how about us Canadians who would like to trade plants? would a Canadian forum be a idea? I don't wanna start something thats get missunderstand, but sometimes I'm lookin at some trade posts and only can drole *LOL*
I know some DG friends don't ship to Canada because of that stupid law (sorry had to say that).

Are there many Canadians on here?
I also have to say that I don't post much, but I'm always here hehehe. The main reason is my english, I have a real hard time writing down what I want to say. my grammar and spelling suck. and please don't suggest a spellchecker... By the time I use it fix the spelling and so on I just delete the post because I don't like it. so I write what I thing and thats it :-)

well thats all

oops! there you are putting your spelling down again! I thought you weren't going to do that anymore :)
how about using the regular trade forums and put "Canadian trade only" in the title or message. then you can make us drool!!! LOL!!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

For the record, I have wanted so many times to send plants to my Canadian friends but my post office won't let me! I am packing a box now for a Canadian member, and I would so love to be able to include a tiny plant and a rhizome. I think it bothers me more not to be able to send it than it does my friends who can't receive it.

sorry tig *LOL* won't do it again.

Aimee, if I trade plants with anyone in the states I never put plants on the form.

the problem, well not problem is, you guys in the states have much more plants to drole :-) TROPICAL and more.

One thing I don't understand is how can we spread pests desises etc. when we only can keep the tropical most of the time inside.

Aimee you also have a good point there... with asking Canadian trade..

I would like to buy fom the states, the phyto certificate is not a big deal, it's the minimum amount you have to buy that is botering me.

well c u on the boards *LOL*

but the laws changed on Jan 22nd. they can't send things to us anymore. legally anyway

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

There has been a law for many years, or maybe I should call it a postal regulation, which required US to have a permit FROM the Minster of Agriculture in Canada before we could legally send ANY part of a plant, including seeds, to Canada. If you were caught in violation, you could be fined up to $200 for sending it, and the plant material would be destroyed. I am not making this up, I had the manager of the Georgetown make me a copy of it from his regulations book. The fact that it wasn't enforced in many places didn't make it go away, and the post office in Georgetown flatly refused to accept the packages without the permit, which would have to be sent to me by the person to whom I was trying to ship. She was quite bitter about it, insisting that it was poppycock and she received plants from the US regularly without any of that. And maybe she did. I mailed her a box from another post office in a nearby town, spent over $6 to do so, and it was returned to me within a week, with a notice that I needed to provide the permit. And I never was able to convince her to get it for me, even though she had sent postage for plants. Some people don't want to believe this because it's an inconvenience, but I do know the regulation is in the book our post office employees are supposed to use for guidance in sending international mail. Maybe 1,000 people sent plants and never had a problem, and maybe that many postmasters were willing to look the other way, but I usually don't send something illegally, as I don't want to take the chance my plant will be destroyed, and I hate paying fines.

wow, I've never heard this Aimee. I had absolutely no idea. I have mailed to Canada, and only lost one package. I have just seen it posted over and over that we could mail to them, it was our regs that stopped the trading. thanks for bringing this to light.

Well I'm moving this thread over to the Dave's Garden forum so I can hear what other Canadians have to say. If more than 10 Canadians speak up, I will create the forum.

(I haven't created a new forum for quite some time, and would enjoy the experience).
