Unwanted email (spam), etc...

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Forward any unwanted email you are getting..spam,porn, etc. to: UCE@ftc.gov

If you just delete it, nothing gets done about it, if the entire email (including the header) gets forwarded to the appropriate authorities, hopefully, SOMETHING will be done about all this [deleted] our mail boxes get filled with.

(Zone 5a)

I have a big problem canceling email advertisements. When I cancel one they send another one from one of their other cronies, thanks for the information.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Does this work? I'm willing to give it a shot. I'm getting so much junkmail it's getting out of line. I can go to bed at 1 am, and at 7 am, I've got 12 or 15 pieces of junkmail in my mailbox.

i just got a new email address had the last one for about 6 years. wa to the point i was getting more spam than email

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Thanks for the address, I have copied it into my address book and will start forwarding all my spam mail to them. In fact, I just forward one just now.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

So is that address for any email you dont want? Junk email? And when it goes there what happens to it...are the senders admonished or something? Fined?

Surry, VA(Zone 7b)

We can request our local server to block any incoming email that is sent to more than 30 addresses at once. I am going to reroute the bulk mailings I want to receive to another address and give this a try. We've also had the same primary email address for several years and I don't want to change it unless this doesn't work.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

This link sends the spam/porn email to the FTC..Federal Trade Commission..but as Carol7 stated, one can also request an addy from your local server to report this stuff...

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Here is more info from the government website www.FTC.gov

You've got Spam (this is good): http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/spam/coninfo.htm

Crackdown on Deceptive E-Mail (2002): http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2002/02/eileenspam1.htm

When you forward stuff to them, be sure to include the e-mail's FULL headers. Otherwise, it does them no good at all because all that gobblegygook contains the info they need to trace the e-mail back to its source. See your e-mail program's documentation about how to show the full headers.

For the most readable copy for them, don't just forward it. That adds all those fun >>>'s to the e-mail and makes it a pain to read. Copy the whole e-mail, including headers, and paste it all into a new e-mail. :)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Okay...silly question here.
Is a "header" in the body of the email? Is it the address of the sender?
I went to my hotmail account and don't see an option to "show headers" anywhere...could they be called by another name?

Thanks Shoe...now I don't have to look stupid...you did it for me!! LOL

I just tried to send a real porno thing I got in the mail...to UCE...it wouldn't let me send it...said:" An alias with a circular reference was encountered in this message. Fix the alias and try again"> Heck...how do I fix the alias? What and where is it? HELP!!!

Of course I do!!! LOL Jo

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

I use a service called Spamstop for my unwanted e-mail. It sometimes takes several days before I stop getting garbage from one company. I have learned that even opening an unwanted message activates cookies and occasionally viruses onto my machine. I have several firewalls installed that limit the damage, but this service has helped. They are at
spamcop.net. When you register, you get a personal code that you just forward the unwanted junk to them, and they forward compilations from the various ISLs and they often cancel the abuser's account. Serves them right!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Good info lupinelover...thanks. (By the way, first time I've seen ya here...Welcome to DG from Me!~)
Roadrunner, can't help ya w/the alias thing. I don't have the foggiest idea about that. Wonder if there is info on that at the UCE site.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Shoe - the headers are the gobbledygook at the beginning of your e-mail. Most e-mail programs are set by default to only show basic headers. When you forward funny stories to others, for instance, it's those headers you (should) delete. Likewise, when you forward something to the abuse@ address of ISP's, or to the UTC address, it's those headers they need. :)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

'K, gotcha. So I have to open the email and then forward, eh? Yuck. Wish I could send a whole list of them at the same time. Lately I've been getting "diploma" and "home mortgage" type stuff...and being told how lucky I am! sheesh.

How can you stop the little pop up windows selling phones and ect. you can X it out and another one comes up,and another. hope someone can tell me what to do. {This is not an email}

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Check out these solutions for annoying pop-up ads:

Popup Stopper at http://www.panicware.com/product_dpps.html
It's a freeware program which will do this for you. You can disable it at sites where there are legitimate pop-up's, like shopping sites which use a pop-up to give more information about the product you're looking at.

Another program I like is AnalogX's POW at http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/pow.htm
This one you customize, adding annoying pop-up's to its list of windows to zap. It's a little klunky and time-consuming at first, but once it has its basic list of who you consider to be the bad guys, it is very good at keeping the riff-raff at bay.

Lastly, this site, Technoerotica (not what it sounds like, I assure you!) at http://www.technoerotica.net/mylog/optouts.html
has a list of pop-up ad offenders, and links to each ad server's opt-out page. When you opt-out at the offender's site, a cookie is placed on your computer which tells the ad server you've opted OUT of seeing the pop-up's.

HTH!

When are one of you good people going to answer my problem I posted on May 10th? About the "circular reference" thingy? scroll back. Thanks!! Jo

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Jo -

That "An alias with a circular reference was encountered in this message. Fix the alias and try again" message indicates there's a problem with the address book entry you have for the UTC address. The alias refers to the "nickname" you gave the entry, I believe.

Gardenwife, you saved the day again... DH was the one having the problem on his computer and he says " make sure you thank that Lady".. SO Thank You very much.

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

Hi HORSESHOE!!!
My wee boy has his own adress on our computer, we are under AOL, and of course, I have a family check which is meant to stop all of the spam/porn getting through. I'm at my 'puter at 9:00 am every morning and check even his adress that nothing is coming through.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Unfortunately, Wintermoor, now those spammers know they reached a human being at the other end; your son's e-mail address will now be added to many more lists like those. :( Best thing to do is ignore/delete and to set up filters which will automatically trash stuff with that junk in it. My filter list is probably five pages long, but it keeps me from having to wade through a cesspool every day before gleaning the good stuff from friends!

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

This has been going on for a few months now, and slowly they are becoming less and less. Today he only got 1 spam-mail. We can't stop all of them since there is always 1 or 2 which will get through, but about 5 or 6 weeks ago, he was getting 15-20 per DAY!!!
I have contacted AOL and asked them why I should put on a family-blocking system, if they let this through.... they told me that I should be watching also, and that they can't be held responsible...... Well thanks for nothing!!!! That means that the AOL family-filter is just no good at all. A shame actually, since I thought they could stop that sort of stuff, but obviously not.

Still fighting them

Kimberely...I took you advice and redid hte UCE address...I had used lower case letters and I changed it to UCE in caps...and just put UCE in the nickname box...resent it and no message came up...Gee whiz...you're a whiz! ( thanking the nice Lady very much) Jo

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

LOL, so I'm the nice Lady now? Tell that to Howie!!!

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

I've been forwarding tons of SPAM to this address..But newer ones just keep popping up to replace them..Actually, it has not slowed down any.. But I just keep pumping them to the address, lol.. I get as many as 25+ daily.. It sure is a pain..
Larkie

Crossville, TN

Larkie, I have been forwarding mine and I think they have slowed down considerably. I'm only getting one or two a day!!! Jo

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

Jo,
I'm still sending them and will keep on doing so, maybe soon..LOL
Larkie

Crossville, TN

A WHOLE DAY WITHOUT ONE!!! Jo

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

cool! I've been doing it also. And for some reason a lot of mine seem to be coming from some "opt in" mailing, and says I subscribed to it. (I don't subscribe to anything except DG.) Will let ya'll know if it stops or slows down. Hopefully soon.)

Crossville, TN

Shoe....there are some that I know I have subscribed to in the past...when I was young and stoopid...now that I am old and smart(er), I don't subscribe to anything. I finally figured out how I kept getting things from Flo-go (greeting cards)....It says...."to view your card and subscribe to our newsletter, click here"....but if you go to the second linc it says..."to just view your card, click here." So...GO TO THE SECOND LINK! Jo

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Thanks Jo. These things I'm getting tho are from all different kinds of companies...apparently they are on a list that this "optin" network or whatever it is sends out. They, of course, at the bottom say "to unsubscribe click here". Oh well...I'll keep trying. For right many months I didn't receive ANY junk mail; right now tho I have my filters on, my junk mail options running and end up with only two or so a day but that is still an invasion to me. HOpe I don't have to change email address again!
