Announcing the new Plants Database!

Following several months of planning and programming, I am pleased to announce the launch of the second version of the Plants Database.

The code behind the site has been completely rewritten from scratch, and is modeled slightly after the Garden Watchdog. A whole slew of new features have been added and we have large plans additional features during the weeks to come.

Special thanks go to go_vols for working on this so hard for many many months. As always, it's a real pleasure working with her and the quality of the work produced is obviously vastly better than it would be without her influence.

Thanks also to the handful of DG members who have helped us with our sections (tomatoes, hostas, daylilies, etc) and to our beta testers who this week have given good feedback and helped us ensure the site is somewhat reliable and steady for this launch.

Now, let's all go head over to the new Plants Database and have a look!! If you see anything wierd, post it here!

Thanks,
Dave

I've just had a look, clicked on Yarrow and when it reached the page it flicked me into tradelists.

Dear me, that's not happening when I click on Yarrow. You're clicking off the homepage right? What part of the tradelists is it sending you to? Please give me precise steps you took to replicate this error.

I clicked on the link in your script above, scrolled down to Yarrow, scrolled down (using keyboard not mouse) to Poppysues 'Comments' and started to read when tradelists came up. I just tried again and it didn't do it this time around.

I'll try to replicate this error - thanks for the report.

Oh, Dave, you and Go_vols have outdone yourselves. This is a wonderful makeover! I checked it out today and couldn't resist adding some photos. I've been so busy around here, that I haven't been visiting the database, but I will now!

(Zone 5a)

I must say I just found the new changes today and was very pleased with it. Thank you all so much for all your hard work it is much appreciated.

This is so wonderful. Words cannot express to Dave and Go_Vols for all your hard work. Thank you so very much!

Congrats Dave and go_vols for a job well done! I've been in the database giving it a "test drive" doing some advance searches and it's WONDERFUL!!!!! Thanks bunches :~D

Just visited for the first time since your 'makeover'
It's brilliant thanks for all the hard work everyone who's been involved.

I did an 'advanced search' and found that there's a place for flower colour near the top, then lower down there's a place for bloom colour which seems identical (apart from the name) Am i missing something?
Prize for spot the deliberate mistake?
Or have i misunderstood?

Anyway, I'm really impressed with new database :)

Hi Dave, I uploaded hosta pic 'Aureomarginata' then went back to that plant clicked on the pic and decided to add a comment with the pic. I clicked edit and it took me to the Hostas database home. I tried this several times with the same result. Is it supposed to let me edit like I wanted to? Anyway, I thought you should know.

Lana

Ahh Daisy I was just about to mention the same thing. I wanted to edit the writing with a pic I posted and it just takes me back to the home page.

Dave - in the brug database when I choose browse by cultivar by letter I get the same initial five datura no matter what letter I choose. Thanks :)

Lana and Baa - thanks for this report. I fixed the problem and members should now once again have the ability to edit the captions of photos.

Rise: I fixed the browse by first letter, also. It seems to be working properly now.

It looks great! Once the bugs are worked out, I think it'll be awesome! The two changes I particularly like are that comments can be added and that others can add info the original poster left out. I haven't have the time or knowledge to research all that info for some plants I have, so for fear of getting it wrong or leaving lots of info out, I haven't posted many. Next time I have time, I can add more plants without worry!! Terrific!

Hey Dave, I think I found another bug can you squash it? LOL I was in the hosta database, clicked on add a new plant to the list, entered Hosta Ventricosa and pressed submit, then clicked on the button to go to the new plant to upload a pic and it said it couldn't be found maybe I mistyped the name or the plant had been moved and was no longer there. I think that's what it said. Anyway, I can't find this plant in a search but if I try to enter it again as a new plant it says this plant is already in the database. Thanks, Lana

Lana, I'm not Dave, and I'm no good at killing the kind of bug you're talking about, LOL. But here's the plant: http://plantsdatabase.com/go/31422/

You might take another run at uploading a photo and see what happens.

Be sure to let him know if it still won't let you load a photo to this entry. Thanks!!!

Dave and go_vols, I think, the Brug database should be changed in some sections. Foilage is very hard to describe, Brugmansia species and cvs have different shape in foilage, could be velvet, pubescent, setaceus, glossy, lanceote, toothed, serrated, wavy, etc. Height and Space differs much when grown as a shrub or like a Tree. It depends also, from which section, vegetative or generative part, the plant originated from. In the US are many different climate zones. A Brugmansia, pruned every fall for overwinteríng, will never reach Space and Height as seen in Glorys pictures from San Diego.

Hi Monika,

We definitely want to nail down more specific characteristics for the Brug database, and we're going to need your expert help in planning exactly what those characteristics will be.

I will get with Vols and see how she wants to proceed, and then we'll be picking your brain. Thanks for helping with this!

best,
dave

Dave, Kyle is a top hybridizer and has much knowledge about Brugmansias. Kyle knows all about US hybrids and Climate Zones, I dont. His help is needed because I couldnt give advice to somebody living in Florida or California. The german Brug forum tried to identify hybrids or species to get the double and false naming erased. But climate, micro climate, soil, fertilizer etc. have such a influence, that it was impossible. The only way, for a sure identification is the cross pollination.
I think, he will agree with me, that the Brug section needs
more specifications. We could supplement each other.

Monika,

I have started a new thread in the Brugmansia forum. http://davesgarden.com/showthread/254315.html
