:)
Happy MayDay!
Evert! That is so sweet! I had forgotten the celebration of spring on May 1st. We made may Day baskets when I was a child to leave on the door handles of our elderly neighbors. It sure brings back sweet memories for me! THANKYOU!
:) MayDay must be different there.. It must be the only real Party here in Finland. You should see Helsinki after it - so dirty and messy, many peopel are drunk on mayday and they have fun.. ehheh. I just celebrated it taking photos.. And with my friend we did all stupid things today, like throwing a raw egg trying not to brake it (till broke to my friends hand), opened a tin of pineapple with an huge axe, made "water balloons" from plastic bags, and put 1 cent coins to peoples mailboxes, ehh.. Theya re not in normal circulation - hope they like their gifts =) We also left them to the streets maybe someone likes picking them, hahahah :)
I know we are weird..
Tomorrow we will go to Helsinki with my friend (Mirja), and buy some "spray serpentine" :)
Nice that I brang back some nice memories :] It is my mothers university student hat.
ROFLOL It sounds like a truly wonderful day! Not wierd, just a lot of harmless fun!
Wow - what a huge celebration, Evert! It almost sounds like the Mardi Gras they have in Louisiana! There's no celebration here for MayDay. Our next big holiday is July 4th, which I would bet that you don't have~!
:) Yes maybe a bit like Mardi Gras. Saw it from tv.. :] Our next holiday is next week thursday and friday - they are days off from school - thanks to Helatorstai when Jesus rised to the heaven (?)
Haha, yes, no July 4th. We don't celebrate our independence day like you I think, it is on a bad month too, hehe.. December 6th.
We are not having a holiday 'cos ours is a research institute, but the factories and shops remain closed for May Day.
Heheh... I've had a great mayday. I went sleeping 6 am yesterday, woke up on 10:30, went to Helsinki with mirja, then we bought some spray serpentine, and had fun with them :] Then wee ate hamburgers and took L-train. We made the part of the vagon where we sat lookig pretty horrible - our maybe it was just a mayday decoration, ehh? The English tourist near us didn't like us :}
Then we came home and made lots of plastic bag water balloons. I'm still wet.. :P
I think I'd rather be in Finland on the first of May. Here, it's the workers fight day or something to that effect. The socialist/left wing political parties get out their flags and march to a big park where they listen to speeches and then drink way too much beer. We stay home on this day. :-) I prefer the spray serpentine and eating lots of sugary food.
By the way, Evert, Karamelli is a finnish kids show shown on Swedish tv. Maybe you don't get it there?
Well, May Day was celebrated here in Germany, as always, with the Ultra-lefts in Hamburg and Berlin having a game of Punch-and-Judy with the cops. It's the same every year, but we get used to it. Only one mile from where I live were the Hamburg riots, no one gets really hurt, since the police use it as a trial for more serious rioting, and it's a good night out for the punks.
I've got a few mates in the police-force in Hamburg, and they treat this as a real civil riot, also knowing that they're standing in front of a mob of beered-up kids who are flexing their muscles, and really are just showing off. The ideals of the ultra-left (and ultra-right), are collapsing around their ears.
I was out this morning in the Mayday march to the Town Hall since I am a Social Democrat (SPD), just to show the government that we workers are still there to be counted, although I run my own business, and have 7 people working for me.
By the way, May-Day is not a socialist celebration, the first of May is internationally "The Day of the Worker", (just like a Mother's Day or Father's Day), and everyone has the right to express her/his opinion on that day. The communist lands of course, used it as Marx/Lenin day to show their new weapons, but look what happened to them.
Finnland has an excellent celebration for the 1st of May, but it isn't really Mayday as in the rest of Europe. They're just happy that the winter is coming to an end, and I think I would celebrate too if I lived up there. It is a beautiful country.
Yours democratically,
Wintermoor
Deblynn, yes, we don't see Karamelli here.
