I mean the pre-k guys! Well, I didn't "k", so it was pre first grade (in a one room school, Marclay!). We lived in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in a tacky little place called Jonestown, and some Italian people had a neighborhood store. They had one of the two phones in the community, the old candlestick kind. You picked up the earpiece and waited for the operator to say "number, please", and you gave her a number. She often joined in your conversation! She might tell you the person was out shopping or in the hospital or gone to their mother's, because she knew what everybody was doing and where they were. The store keepers were nice about letting customers use the phone. One day, Mama sent me to get a block of cheese, and I had to wait for the owner to come out of their living quarters in the back. I picked up the phone earpiece out of curiosity, and just as the operator came on, the owner's son came running in. Seeing me, he gleefully shouted hello, started asking my name, how old I was, all sorts of stuff, and the operator said, "Hi, Leonard, is that you?" I threw the phone down and ran home. Mama went back with me, and she and the owner had a good laugh about it, but I was so shy, I just stood there fighting tears. So the owner told Leonard to apologize for scaring me and offer me a piece of bubble gum, a prized treat at the time. It set the tone, and as long as we lived there, Leonard considered me his special girl, despite the fact that I made fun of him being fat and loud. He always brought me bubble gum, candy, filled cakes and RC Colas. I always sat as far away from him as our hill would allow, but took the treats because they made Doris and Rita jealous. We moved to Louisiana, I suppose to be near my grandmother so she could help Mama, and I don't know what Leonard did. Don't even recall saying goodbye. Wonder if Copperbaron could check them out for me.....
How did your very first boyfriend woo you?
Oh, I could not go into the details of those magic moments... Hymmmm! They are sacred! :)
Chicken! Not even with family?
He was a redheaded freckled faced adonis of 8 and very shy. I was a blond haired (tow head) at the ripe old age of 7.His name was Billy and he lived down the road about half a mile. All summer long Billy would show up at our house before we were even awake and sit on the porch until we opened the door and found him. Mom would ask him if he wanted to come in and he would turn 15 shades of red and shake his head no. He sould just sit there on the front steps until I came out and then he followed me everywhere I went. I kept telling him to go home and quit following me and my Mother kept telling me to be nice to him cause he was shy and needed friends. I still remember the first time he actually spoke to me! He had been coming over like that for about a month without ever opening his mouth and that morning when I came out he was sitting on a beautyful little brand shiney new 2 wheel bicicle with training wheels! I tell you it was love at first sight for me and that bike! He turned a bright red and croaked out "wanna ride my bike?" Of course after that I never told him to go away again! By the end of summer when school started I went into the first grade and he went into the second grade. After that he gave up following me because the other kids teased him so he would pretend he didn't know me until we were safe at home and no one else was around. His family moved away halfway through the school year and that was the end of Billie....Boy did I miss that Bicycle!
Hahaha, "Baby, you can drive my car"
In third grade, I was pursued by a young dark-haired boy with beautiful hazel-gold eyes. He sat behind me in class and sent me notes and flirted with me. He once sent me a note asking what my favorite color was, and, being a sceptical young girl, I asked why he wanted to know. He replied that he wanted to know what color to make my wedding dress. I was quite flattered.
In eighth grade, we went steady, but I gave his ring back when he told me he loved me...far too serious for me! In our senior year of school, we went together again, and by the next fall, I was pregnant and we were married.
After having two children, my old sweetheart, then husband moved us all to Alaska. After five years in Alaska, he left me for another woman... the woman he'd always wanted and looked for... or so his mother told me.
About ten years later, he lost one of those beautiful hazel eyes, and about 10 years after that, he passed away from unknown causes. I still have his old 8th grade love notes.
Awww, Weez, that's so touching! I'm glad you kept the notes. Seems right.
Hah!! At last!!! Hurray for Aimee managing to get more than a couple of punch lines out of Zany!!! lol!!!
My first love was in Kindergarden-Doug! He use to sing tiny bubbles to me and he had frekles and was kinda chubby-But he sang to me!!! One day he and Kevin were having a tug of war one on each of my arms! saying "Shes mine-no shes mine"
That was the day I picked Doug!
I just luv when guys sing to me! ;]
Steven Patchett.... He kissed me right on the lips on the way home from Sunday school! It was right before Christmas and when he asked me to be his girlfriend, I said ... "well I have to be now silly. You kissed me!"
Then he brought me a present to church the next week. It was the first time I ever recieved a gift from someone that wasn't in my family. A Christmas present. I so wanted to open it but the paper was making too much noise even in a back pew. It was beautiful, sparkley, rinestone earrings... I thought I was the luckiest girl in the world having a beau. I have no idea what happened to him. Don't actually even remember when we lost touch with each other. I only remember the kiss and the gift. And trying not to make any noise during the service :)
These are so cute! Thanks for sharing your little puppy loves, some turning into lasting unions. I have enjoyed the vignettes you created.
Sorry, I started much later, but one of my much younger sisters had a beau long before I did. I remember this little boy would come over and knock on the door. I would open it and ask what he wanted. He would look me straight in the eye and say. "I've come to sweet talk Mary Lou." He would bring her flowers he picked or interesting rocks and things. Come to think of it, I don't believe I ever did have a boyfriend as sweet as he was. :-)
Tommy Norwood. we 'went' together from 3rd to 6th grade. He drew the most beautiful bird pictures, and I had a folder full of them.
And then? Come on, Ozarksue, you can't leave us without telling how it ended!
LOL Louisa! I usually don't go into story tellin mode until the kids get me started! But I have been known to string more than a couple of words together at a time now and then!
Zany, I am so happy you did here. That is such a cute story to follow along, and your ending is vintage zanymuse!
Lets see, back when I was 3 or 4 I guess. Ronnie Gene, red hair & freckles. He lived across the street & next door to my best friend. We all always played together. I don't know how many weddings we had....lots. My best friend was alway jealous & wanted to "marry" him also, but he always told her no. He moved away & my mom has a picture of us on the front porch smoochin. He started at my highschool later, but we never got back together, he was pretty rough in highschool, I partied alot, but was not into the drugs like he was.
OH! MY! such along time ago, but I'll never forget William. He had slick ,dish-water blonde hair, chubby, wore plaid shirts under those pin-stripe overalls! we would hang back from everyone else walking home from school, not a problem then, like today. He would carry my satchel and ask my mom if I could go to his house to play.(he lived two houses over)He would push me into heaven in his tree swing. His mom would give us a snack and he would walk me back home, holding my hand, and we would be singing a song we had learned that day.(he liked polly, wolly doodle)...we moved to another school district the next yaer, and I never saw him again. Don't even know his last name.:(

It's so long ago I can't remember :-)
We were living in Nebraska and my first true love was, oh whats his name, tommy? greg? scott?...he was the only person that lived near sunnybrook that wasnt retired, married or a girl, lol..i can remember thinking he was so cute. whem moved from grandmas, i remember giving her a note to give to him with the infamous "do you like me, check yes or no" line..times were so simple then
my friend penny and i used to have pretend marriages also..we of course, were going to marry the cartwright brothers, i was especially fond of lil joe, and thought the way you did it was to line them up against the barn, get spun around and point..the one you pointed to would be the one you married.
this is a great thread.
I was about 7 and my mom and I stayed at my grandmothers who watched me while my mom was working. There was this really cute boy, don't even remember his name. I think he was in my first grade class. He was a rich kid and would come over to play where I lived quite often. One day I decided to go to his house to play and didn't tell my grandma........boy, did I get my butt spanked when I got home.
I don't remember much from my childhood though :(
I guess my brain blocked most of it out. Heck I could talk to you now and in 5 minutes totally forget what it was about. That's what makes it easy for me on the computer because I can go back and read it again........LOL
Flowox, my mind is still like a steel trap...it holds onto memories of things long ago but it was sprung sometime in the 80's or 90's and nothing has been able to get in there since!
Oh, I could hardly wait to get on the puter and see who wrote an interesting story! Thanks to all of you, I really like these memories and the sense of sharing the more innocent times. Louisa, you and I know you could recall it, if you just would. Come on, we shared, you should, too!
Well my 'courting' days really started very late when I attended college, but I do sort of remember having a crush when I was about 5. He was a blonde, quiet-type of a guy!! Never really said much to me except to ask for an occasional answer to a problem!! I can't remember his name but he sat beside me in class and he did sort of follow a girl around in the playground, only having eyes for her I guess!! We were in Malta at the time and the Queen (then Princess) was coming to visit our school and there was to be a little tea party afterwards. Each class was presenting a bouquet to her and I was chosen to do this honour for my class!! My mum made me a beautiful organza dress in blue and I just loved it and felt like a 'queen'. Well I don't know what spurred the magic on, whether it was the dress or the fact that I was going to curtsey to Princess Elizabeth but afterwards at the party, this little gent was at my beck and call and became very solicitous. He fetched me cake and lemonade and partnered me in all the little dances!! At the day's end he kissed me on the cheek and I just about fainted!! I felt so special and loved that day but the euphoria didn't last long!! The weekend followed and we all went back to school on the Monday. I glanced his way many times but he only had eyes for another. She was far prettier than I was anyway, even in her school uniform. I guess I only shone when I'd had a make-over......lol!! Men!!
So our former Queen Gasbag has had previous experience being Queen for a day! I knew it! You truly are Royalty!~
Louisa: I fear that the male species just can't help checking out greener pastures... it's just their nature. Not that they necessarily act upon it, but they've got to look and dream. Their contemplations have little to do with a female's personality or her skills... it's more superficial, and usually their imaginations are far more enticing than the object of their musings! One would wonder where that little boy is today. So sad he missed the true jewel while admiring the rhindstones!
Ha-ha you guys!!! Zany, it was only a small bunch of flowers!!! Gosh Wheezy I'm sure there's a poet lurking inside you or at best, a novelist!! Looking forward to reading you in the future :-)
YES! I knew it, too! Who else could they have chosen for the honor? It was manifest destiny, my dear, and no one here is a bit surprised. But I take serious issue with your poor skills at self assessment. We have all seen your pictures, and we all immediately gasped, "She's beautiful". Maybe I shall have to bring up that one right after you returned from Germany?
You are far too generous with the compliments Aimee - I don't share your observations however but I thank you!! I can't wait to see you and everyone else whom I have got to know so well!! So how about it guys, snapshot anyone????
My first love was a boy named Jody Gallino. He had bright red hair and freckles. His mother planned a 6th birthday party for him, and since there were only about 10 of us in the class, we were all invited. Problem was the birthday boy got pink eye the morning of the party, and since I had seen him with my mom earlier that day and was exposed, the two of us had to play inside, and the rest of the class got to go outside for the real party. So Jody and I struck up a "love affair" at the ripe old age of 5 and 6. Later that school year, I remember that he had begun to look at a little blonde curly haired number, so I figure if I showed him my petticoat, he would return to my side of the playground and we could resume our hot times on the swings! HA! Wrong! I asked him if I showed him my slip, would he please stay my boyfriend? He said: "I don't know; let's see it." So I showed it to him and he ran laughing and blushing over to the teeter totter and the little blonde. Boy, I sure learned a lesson, although probably not as well as I could have.....
Many years later and many years ago, while in my 30s, I ended up doing a work/study program for the Adult Literacy Council at the community college I attended. My position was directly supervised by a very beautiful woman about my own age, a tall statuesque brunette with a smile that could melt the coldest heart. Beautiful both inside and outside. The funny thing was, when she first met me, she immediately laughed like crazy and told me she had married my First Grade love, Jody Gallino, who was now Fire Chief for that city. What a small world! Eventually, we all ended up going to dinner together and having a few good laughs about the pink eye/petticoat episodes. I was amazed that he had told her of our 1st grade romance, and she had managed to remember my name! Too cute!
Great story, Penny! Gosh, back in the days when little girls wore dresses... I'd almost forgotten! We used to have those little numbers with the fitted waist, gathered skirt, and a tie in the back. I hated them, since it was pretty hard to rough house in one. I'd wear my corduroys and the teacher would send a note home.
My mother would have liked nothing better than to have a feminine little girl. It's a wonder any little boy took a second look at me! I don't think I ever made the kind of impression you did. You were a pretty girl.. remember, you sent me a picture or two!
Wow, they start young! How nice to be able to see the ending, though, since it was a good one. Still, I think I might have to switch the salt shaker and sugar bowl contents while he was in the restroom at dinner. Well, he thought enough of the "affair" that he told his wifemate about it, so you did make an impression! Such a cute story.
Well I guess I was being a bit ironic, given the only hot thing we did at that age was look for frogs in the pond and eat sour grass. I do tend to over conceptualize things when I write. I did show him my slip and I guess that came from something I had overheard. My parents owned a very small grocery story, in very small town, so I heard a lot at a young age. I'm 48 now, and back then I had BIG ears. Guess I eventually put underwear and boyfriends together and this was what I came up with. One time I went to first grade show & tell (circa 1958) and told the whole class all about my older (by 17 years) sister's baby, a big secret!! Between hubbies you know. Boy did I get in trouble for that one!!! Guess I always was a story teller; they were all true, but no one wanted to admit they were. LOL!
Penny, you can sure spin a story.. it's the journalist in you. Here's one of my grade school misdeeds:
When I was a little girl in the second grade, the teacher was so impressed with my horse drawing that she asked me to draw one on the blackboard for the class. She even invited in the principal and some other teachers. I sensed it was an important moment so I wanted to behave as much like an artist as possible. I drew a large horse on the blackboard, then stepped back scratching my chin in contemplation as I sighted in the horse drawing with an upturned thumb.
After a moment's deliberation, I stepped back up to the board and carefully drew in a crack in the horse's butt. There was a sudden intake of breath from the adults, and I was sure I had created a masterpiece, until I turned around and saw their shocked faces. My teacher never asked me to draw on the blackboard again!
