Well people, my PC which is not even a year old needs to go in for repairs as my CDRW which is also my CDROM is not working anymore :(
They said it would take 2-3 weeks for me to get it back. You can imagine how I feel.........can't decide when exactly I want to take it in as I will just die without it for that long :(
I will let you know for sure but if worse comes to worse and it acts up and I'm suddenly gone for a long time, then you'll know why :)

That is wayyyyyyy tooo long to be without a computer unless you are gone on vacation! You will need all the distractions you can find to maintain sanity.
I would have them ship me a new drive and install it myself {or should say have DH install it )
Why should it take so long Flowox?
If it's playing-up it may only be your software, have you tried re-installing it?
If it is the hardware, why can't you just take it out and send that instead of the entire computer?
If this is guarantee work, then it should not take 2-3 weeks, that's a disgrace!!
They build computers in 1 hour, so why should you have to wait so long.

the computer is a HP and is still covered under HP warranty, which means it has to be sent to HP to get fixed. It's not the software and I have tried to uninstall the drive and reinstalling it with no success. I'm somewhat knowledgeable when it comes to these things so I'm not totally in the dark :)
It doesn't think that it has a CD in it at anytime. It worked fine a few days ago but then just suddenly stopped working. It just keeps saying to put in a CD and I have tried plenty, believe me. Drives do go bad and I just happen to have gotten one that decided to go bad :(
Bought it at Best Buy.........if Office Depot was still here and I had bought it there I would not have this problem as they had a guy from HP come in to fix computers once a week. Best Buy has to send it to their main office because they won't fix it here because I chose not to buy their extended service plan. You better believe I won't buy anything else from Best Buy though!!
How about using the Public Library to communicate?
When I first got my little Compaq, the battery wasn't working. The clock wouldn't hold time. So, I too, had purchased at Best Buys and took it in for repair. They told me it would be a couple of weeks. I asked why changing a battery was such a hard job. They didn't like me right away. It took over a month to get my computer back and I complained. I said that they had wasted a month of my warranty time and I wanted something done about it. I had purchased the extended warranty, and they did re-do it and added an extra month on to it. My printer went bad, took it in, and they were going to send it in. Then I really raised heck. I ended up getting a new printer, with new ink in it and a newer model for $10. I don't usually get upset over things, but when it comes to my computer, don't mess with me. I'm sure they knew there would be a scene if they didn't sooth my ruffled feathers, and quick. I will never again purchase something like a computer from anyplace like this place again. Will go directly to the company or their retail outlets. Plan on going with Gateway next time.

That's really too bad, but let's hope it doesn't take too long to get back. Maybe using Celia's idea to get in touch with the family here from the library.

you were right to raise a riot with them at the store, I've heard that from so many people, when things are new and break down, the store whips the repair-time from the warranty limit.
The best bet ladies is not to go back to Best Buy, it's ok me being clever after the event though;-/

I guess I have been getting tired of salesMEN thinking they can walk all over us women and I just wasn't in the mood to take it anymore. It worked that time and it worked when I bought my last truck. If they want your business badly enough, they will treat you right. If not, there is someone else out there who does want your business.
Susan, I wish I had a spare computer to loan you because I remember than month so well. There was no DG at that time, but I sure missed my email more than anything. Hope they get it fixed in record time for you. I kept bugging them, not that it did any good, but at least the next time I was in the store, the guy I always called to the phone, knew who he was talking to. :-)
Library might be a good idea for some people but not for me. when I get online I don't want to be told when I can and can't get online and you have to sign up at the library to use it and if you don't get there on time then you're out of luck........just not my cup of tea :)
I will take it in sometime next week but knowing me, I'll probably procrastinate because I don't want to be without it.......LOL. Something that has to be done though

Some places have loaner computers that you can use while yours is being fixed. I'd ask them about that too.

Maybe their is someone in your area who works with computers, and isn't against making a dollar or two in his spare time.
OK, you may lose your warranty, but so what??, it's either that or lose the machine for 3-4 weeks, but you have always someone close-by who can help you if you have a problem.... By the same token, I don't know anybody here (in Hamburg), who takes their computer back to the multi-store where they bought it. Even when it breaks down within the warranty period, since the company says that it's gone for a week.... even a week is too long!!!
Is there no wee computer shop near you? where you can go in and get your 'puter seen to within a couple of hours?? It costs a couple of $$ more, but your contact to the moon is still there.....!!

I've always been taught in Scotland, 'Push them away, and they will kill to get back', business is business, these people MUST sell or they're out of the door. I was in the music business for over 20 years here in Germany.... If an agent needed a tour in Germany, and I was his (almost) last hope, I always turned him down. They wanted too much money, in the end, I (almost) always got the price I wanted.
I also have a Compaq computer, but after the first crash, I took it into a computer shop in the neighbourhood, and they fixed the problem for me... It cost a couple of DMarks more than sending the thing back to Compaq, but HEY I had my machine again within 6 hours.... By the same token, I bartered with these guys about the price I had to pay.
I'm not saying that I do everything right, please believe me, but being told that the machine is gone for 3-4 weeks is a wee bit too much..... even for the most soft mannered person.... whoever that is!!!!

well I could do it myself but I don't have the cash to buy a new CD writer so have no choice but to have it sent to Hewlett Packard.

Es lebt sich sehr gut in D., ausser diese furchtbare Sache am Freitag in Erfurt.
Sonst 'alles im Butter', (wie die Hamburger sagen), und ich bin hier seit 1972... aber nur in 'good-old Hamburg'. Ich habe Dein Bild in Dein Journal gesehen, wie Du in der Chor gesungen hast. "Nur zu", kann ich nur sagen, weil ich wurde das selbe machen wenn ein Schottische chor geben sollte, obwohl ich nicht singen kann!!
Ich muss aber jetzt Kopf auf's Kissen legen, da ist schon 04:20 ist, und irgendwann muss ich Morgen aufstehen... hoffentlich!!!

I bought my Compaq from Sears....with an extended warranty (in home service). I am so glad we bought the extened...as they lost money on me...they came to my house...here and in Florida...put in 2 mother boards, 2 hard drives, various other things that I'm not smart enough to name...replaced my monitor, printer, speakers and keyboard...all in the 3 years time!!! The last thing to go wrong was the keyboard....2 days before the warranty expired!! I think all Sears Tech dept. had Jan 13th circled on their calendar...my expiration date...I knew them all by name.... I miss those guys :( LOL Jo
I must admit, when our DVD rom went bad, we bought another and installed it instead of missing our internet too much! We did get a deal and a rebate on the dvd rom though, so that helped. We bought our set up at Best Buy also. When our monitor went out, it took 3 weeks. My hubby bought a cheap $3.00 monitor from the Goodwill to tide us over. Nasty picture, tiny screen but hey, it got us through!
Hey flowox, You might try contacting HP instead of dealing with bestbuy. They might send you out a new CDRW. That is how dell and Micron do things. They are easy to install. Just a couple of screws and two wires. Hope you get it takin care of soon.

Hey, Flowox -- Maybe you've not been to the new library's computer area. They've got many terminals and I've been able to just walk in any time and sit right down at one. You don't have to sign up on a list any more; you just put the pin# from your library card in as your login and you're all set. I think they limit you to two hours, but they probably can re-set that if there's no one else needing on. Thought you might like to know. :)
