Peter,

I have a rooted Begonia with red hairs up the stems and on the back of the leaf. The leaf is waxy with fine downy white hairs on the front. The leaf is rather large like a Maple leaf. My question is: Can I lay the leaf on its side, make slits across the veins and lay the leaf on potting soil in another pot with the remainder of the rooted leaf in its small pot?

My second question is: What kind of Begonia is this? I've never seen this type before?
Thanks.

Hello Joydie - among the various groups of Begonias not all respond to propagation by leaf cuttings as do rex. Iwould most certainly do as you suggest, but leaving it on its parent plant will not necessarily increase the chances of rooting. Adventitious roots are produced from the wounds because of stress and the exposure of the meristematic tissues which produce these roots. Being sustained by the parent will be unlikely to improve rooting potential in the case of a leaf cutting.
Whether you leave it attached or remove it, give it a close environment at a temp- of around 70-75F 20-24C.

As for type - the nearest I can get is B.manicata, but I'm far from certain.

Peter.

PS it took MaVieRose to give me a shove. I'm still getting a bit lost in my mail and forgeting to check threads.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the suggestion as to the name. I did search under manicata and found a plant similar to mine. I think what I will do is wait until i have a second leaf and then cut the mother leaf off and try the other method. I don't want to lose this little rooted cutting completely although I do want to try my luck at the other rooting method.

My Primrose cuttings are doing well. The one put where I cut the leaf into quarters didn't do well but the others are fine. I have them in a plastic baggie sitting on top of the growlight that put off a fair amount of heat and in addition they have light from the growlight above. I'll let you know how I make out with them. I think I'm going to take cuttings of my Japanese Primrose from the garden when they also come up. They were dear to purchase when I last bought them.

Each day I go back and read through your webpage. Lots of great information there. I especially love the pictures of the various gardens. Makes one long for Spring to truely be here. We had rain followed by hail the other day so there is still at least a month before the weather stabilizes.

I'm inquisitive, are you a Horticuluralist?

Take care,
Joydie

Thanks MaVieRose,

Well my goodness...he does have expertise especially in propagation...how blessed we are to have him here. Thanks MaVieRose.

Hello joydie;

you are wise to let your Begonia make more growth before propagating. Always best to look after the stock plant first.

Sorry but I'm lost with the reference to Primrose cuttings. Must be something I've missed out on. Anyway, good luck with whatever propagation you attempt. I wish I could have been precise with regard to identification of your begonia. My only excuse is that there are around 300 species in cultivation. :)

The Japanese primrose - P japonica and its cultivars are wonderful plants for damp and semi shaded areas of the garden, and most particularly the margins of pools and bog gardens. But I'm sure you will know that, being a grower of them yourself. I recall one place where I worked we had a very heavy loam turning to clay in beds surrounded by mature trees at a distance of about 20m. The situation was ideal for primulas and provided a home for P. bulleyana; beesiana; florindae; japonica; sikkimensis etc. The candelabras are fantastic.

As for your final question - perhaps you could go to my index page (home) and click on my photo. Give a little time for screen rendering.

joydie,
You could simply ask me how to propagate this plant, since I'm the one that propagated this one and send it to you. I'm still waiting for my trade
:-(

Sorry to be involved Zameluzza - I do hope that Jodie will respond and you will be able to help here with the proper name. Plus a resolution to your personal transaction.

Sorry to butt in, too, zameluzza, but I grow that begonia, or a similar one. I got it this winter from our local Conservatory as a used plant. The pot was stuffed overfull of crowns, which I ruthlessly ripped apart and potted up separately in April. This beauty had a nametag, which I lost when I repotted. All divisions are happy in their new pots, new leaves coming out of crowns and growing bigger every day! I found a reference to this one in one of Christopher Lloyd's books, as one that he enjoys growing as a houseplant. A few leaves that broke off during the mauling landed in other pots, which rooted and are happily growing.

Seems this one can't lose! Magnificant foliage plant, and mine had many spent flower stalks which I trimmed off when I bought it. Can't wait to see it flower. The name is a woman's name, but can't remember exactly, and can't remember which Lloyd book I found it in, I read so many of his.

By the way, in the fall, I am going to have to find new homes for 2 of these new divisions: I simply don't have room for 4 pots of begonias indoors. If anyone would like a new houseplant that is gorgeous, keep me in mind!

Zamelluza are you Carmen? Email me please through this website. My hotmail account crashes and freezes my computer when I try to access it so I can't reply to your emails although I can see them listed. Thanks.
