Contests!

The Container Gardening forum is about to begin the Container Gardening Photo Contest, 2002, so head over to http://davesgarden.com/showthread/229527.html to learn the details, and let's get those containers started.

And, it's time to start the planning for other contests this year. Our Brug and Datura photo contest last year was a huge success that was a lot of fun for the participants and generated a lot of beautiful pictures for everyone to look at. Will we hold another brug contest?

Are there any other photo contests we should be holding?

Dave

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Here are some ideas (I'm NOT asking to coordinate any of them - just throwing out ideas!)

How about a biggest tomato contest? And/or watermelon, pumpkin? The honor system for weighing them, plus a picture to get an idea of relative size :)

Best-looking veggie patch? Flower garden? Most improved landscape?

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

The Brug and Datura contest last year was fun! I have to admit that being a judge was hard though with so many lovely ones to choose from! I am trying to figure out what to enter in the containers contest....Gotta think of something cause it sounds like fun!

How about the most unusual garden art or the best mud pie :}

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

would love to have another brug/datura contest dave. if possible.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

love the best improved landscape idea, and what about best climber something/best trellis use? all of these contests generate not only fun, but great ideas for the next season.

Dave
Thanks for making it possible for us to submit photos for the container contest!

There is a MG contest on the vine forum.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

What about "most unusual garden art" contest? That's be fun to browse through!

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

oooh, I like the unusual garden art idea. I may be able to come up with something for that here on the farm!

Lana

Contests currently in progress:

Morning Glory
and
Container Gardening

It looks like a general Garden Photo Contest is in order, with several categories of prizes, including:

"Best Before and After"
"Most Unusual"
"Best Garden Photo Overall"

and so forth (the judges can decide on the actual categories).

If any other specific groups would like to have a contest for their own favorite gardening area, let me know and I'll set it up - it only takes a few minutes to setup a new contest area.

And don't worry about being a judge - I've set it up so that it's real easy for judges to go in and view all pictures at once. It's fun!

(Someone from the Brug groups needs to let me know when they are ready to open the Brug contest, 2002)

Oh, what fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love this! I can't say enough how much I'm looking forward to all this!!! And not just judging or competing, but looking at all the entries! I love looking at pictures of everyone's specific flowers, but I REEEEEALLY love looking at pictures of everyone's entire flowerbeds, containers, ponds, projects and veggie gardens!! This is going to be so cool!

Dave, will you leave the contest pics up forever like you have the brug contest pics? I like going back in there and looking at those gorgeous brugs and dats.

PS: How about "strangest veggie" contest? There's not really a "Vegetable Forum" to bring it up on. Heirlooms seems more geared towards just that ~ heirlooms ~ though I guess it would be applicable there. I just hesitate to talk about problems with my hybrid zuchini in there. *grin*

> will you leave the contest pics up
> forever like you have the brug
> contest pics?

Of course!

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Looks like it's going to be a fun time at DG in the next few months. I'm game for anything.....well, not quite!! I do like the idea of the most improved garden with before and after shots and not because my garden is new. :-) It is not quite a year old and not nearly ready to 'show' yet!! All the other suggestions are very appealing too. So Wingnut, what's wrong with your zuchini then??? Funny shape perhaps? :-)

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Wonderful! Thanks SuperDave! (*giggle* You're Mom's been tellin' on ya'. http://davesgarden.com/showthread/229862.html )

Wingnut: Take a look at this: http://davesgarden.com/showthread/49542.html

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Yah-ha-ha!! It really looks like you had the SuperSuit on! Kimberley's good, isn't she?!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Ha! He's been incognito for a while.

Ok, I think that about does it. We should be all set for the contests of 2002. Click on Contests in the menu to see what we've got going on.

This should be loads and loads of fun. Each contest will last all summer long and will close around the end of September, early october (each contest will have a panel of judges who will determine an official end-date as we near the time).

This should be a lot of fun.

Dave

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Alllllrright! Now, we just determine amongst ourselves which are the judges, right? And let you know? Go_Vols, I'd love to help with the veggie contest, but will probably want to enter, so ... (?)

Oh, Louisa ~ forgot to answer you! I was just using that as an example. My zuchini's fine ~ the neighbors can attest to that. ;-)

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

What's the garden art contest all about?

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

lol how did I miss that photo of King Dave...er!! sorry....Superman Dave!!! Clever gal our Kimberley!! Glad your zuchini is normal then Wingnut - I believe you!! :-)

Flowox: The Garden Art contest was proposed (in this thread) by Zanymuse, seconded by gardenwife and thirded by Wvdaisy.

Just one more for consideration please, how about a small garden contest?

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

I would definately be in the small garden contest. I live in a Condo and don't have much space at all :)

Could the small garden be a part of the Landscaping contest?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Dave, that makes sense to me. Another contest idea (perhaps another category within landscaping?) is for the "prettiest pond" (I can see myself getting lots of good ideas from that one!)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

like the pond contest idea. Mine would never win, but would love to see all the best of the best so I can copy:)

Yes to the pond. I've updated the contest page to reflect the small garden and pond.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Something like "Best use of a small space" and make it for gardens in spaces under a given number of square feet?

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Well - don't want to rock the boat here but it seems to be my speciality lately :-) I can't see why you have to define landscape even more. Does it matter how big or small a garden is?? OK hit me now if you want!!!! lol!!

Well, we're just setting different categories of awards. All the pictures will be lumped into the general Landscaping contest, and then the winners will be selected from the various categories of awards.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Gotcha!! I think!! :-)

(Zone 5a)

Dave I know your job here in this situation can't be easy, but the one's here with small gardens can't compete with those who have the landscaping capabilities or the space to have a pond. The best I can do is have a fountain lol. I will just enter the plants in hopes that maybe I just might make it this year lol

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

windsurffer, there's a landscaping contest category specifically for small gardens. I think it's only fair to have a special category for those of you who garden in small spaces - you really have some unique constraints and so many come up with very creative ways of gardening in the limited space you have.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

hey wind, I live in a condo and I dug a pond. It's very small but I have gold fish in there.........LOL. I mean small!!! Tried to make it deep though. Just finished it Saturday

(Zone 5a)

Hey Flo my landlord would have a heart attach if I did that. I do have a small water fountain, does that count lol.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

LOL Wind, guess I'm lucky there. Jim bought this condo unit from his Mom and Dad when they moved to New Mexico so even though I can't do anything much to the outside landscaping since it pretty much has to look like everyone elses (I did plant some flowers out front), I can do anything I want to the inside yard that is fenced off :)

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Windy!! I love small gardens. You get to see all the hidden treasures that might become lost in the larger scheme of things. I have big open spaces but there is a little plot, shaded and tucked away from the the rest of the garden. It's very special!! So yes, you can compete with the big guns!!!! :-)

(Zone 5a)

Louisa, thanks and I do like my little garden but there is so much I want to add to it and can't because it's not mine.
Believe you me I try to squeeze eveything in the world in there lol. When I trade seeds no one can believe that I only have 250 sq ft, they usually ask me how I get it all in lol. I don't ever want a garden over 1/2 acre, I don't think I could take care of it but I would give it my best shot. Would like to have a pond with a fountain, but I have to wait on that one.

Well....I don't see a catagory that I stand a chance in....this year!! Maybe I should just be a judge! LOL

OHHH! I forgot...I'm in the MG War...look out! Jo

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Windy that's how we (English folk) like to garden - so much so that you just don't get to see the soil at all. Very few weeds too!! :-) Have you ever posted a pic?? Jo, I've been hearing about you (wink). Could be you will be giving all of us tips by next year huh!!!
