When to plant?

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

Since we are having such warm-hot days, have you all decided to forego the Farmer's Almanac recommended planting dates? Supposedly in my area we are not to plant before May 10. I always use the May 1 date, tho. But when I'm brave and plant the last 2 weeks of April, things turn out okay. Don't know why I'm hesitant this year. What are you all going to do?

If I had known that we were in for a heat wave I would have held off - but all this is for the wrong reasons!! Can't see it really cooling down much now, so in for a penny!! Has to be safe now surely!!!

I am hesitant too!!! I have not bought anything from a garden center yet!!!! My Dad always told me not to plant until Memorial Day here!!!! I am not sure what to do either the weather is just so WIERD!!!!!!!!

Our average last frost date is April 15th, and the long term forecast shows that that temps will not dip below 55 for the next 7 days (that's as far as they show).

Last night Trish and I planted the entire vegetable garden, including lots of sweet corn, squash, watermelon, okra. We also put out about 40-50 tomato plants, and 12 peppers.

Today I put 14 brugs in the ground (watered thoroughly, of course).

I'm betting heavily that it's "safe to plant". :-)

Our average last frost date is mid-March, so I've already put out begonias and a couple other annuals ~ gotta' find a sunny place for my brugs next. Kenny and I've already set out peppers and tomatoes in the veggie garden. We also have English peas producing, walking onions making topsets and potatoes a foot tall. Spinach will be ready in a couple more weeks. We have plans for more beds and they'll get built next so we can plant beans, squash and all that good stuff ~ I can't LIVE without my spaghetti squash!!

I noticed that my dinner-plate hibiscus plant has started sending up shoot from the ground, so that means it's safe to plant. Someone also said that once the dogwoods bloom, we don't have a killing frost again. Hope that's true.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

You might check your long-term forecast. This is supposed to be the last unseasonably hot day for us for a couple weeks. I hope they're right - it'd be nice to have a few weeks of true spring before summer arrives for good :)

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

GL you were right to post this question!! Just heard that next week's temps are dropping down to the 30s at night!! Our last official frost date is May 18 I believe. Guess they got it right again!! I'll have to wait to plant up my container for the competition because it's so heavy and once planted we will never be able to move it :-(

We have a forcast for snow and temps in the 30's. Had a hail storm yesterday-glad I didn't put some of my plants out. I would also like to see some real spring weather.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Cold in Iowa with lows in the lower thirties. Not planting time here yet, even though a few days ago we were near 85 degrees. I'm holding off just to be safe. Will plant around May 1. Always do that and have had no problems yet. Do have the cold weather vegies planted though.

MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

Well our heat wave is going to break too :) They say some parts of MD will get into the 30's and possible frost!!! I'm not too worried, it should not get that cold here on the bay, the water temp is 50 something already. It better not anyway, cause I've been a planting fool the last 2 weeks, LOL.

Cleveland, OH(Zone 5b)

The saying goes, "if you don't like the weather in Cleveland, wait a minute, it will change!" I"m going to wait at least until Mothers' Day.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

celia we say something like that in England too!! :-)

Our forecast is showing 39 for Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Other than that, high 70's and low 50's at night...I'm looking forward to that!

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

vic that is my idea of a perfect weather forecast :-)

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Granny Lois, the blackberries are blooming now one more cold spell to kill blooms on them and then that will do all the frost this year. Bobbie

Feeding Hills, MA(Zone 5a)

Our local nurseries have started selling their perennials.

Of course, I bought some. With Debz from Dave's Garden who I met for the very first time.

But...I have kept them in their pots and I am glad that I did. We have icy rain here today and the house is all closed up again with low temps outside. And by the weather report...should be a whole week of it.

Farmers almanac said April 27th.....think I will wait till the first of May.
