What is Drunken Woman Lettuce??

Pine City, MN(Zone 4a)

A wonderful person on this site sent me some seeds, and I can't find this in the data base, and DH and I are dying to know what it is? Leaf lettuce? Head lettuce? Tilted, falling down lettuce that talks too much? No, wait, the would be THIS drunken woman!

Joan,

We grew Drunken Woman last spring, and have it started again this year. Personally, it was my favorite lettuce that we grew. It is a leaf lettuce. Darker green in color, and the tips are red. The legend (that I heard, anyway), is that it is called Drunken Woman because it looks like somone had spilled wine on the leaves.

Dave documented it fairly well in his journal....I think that the pictures don't do the plant justice, but it does give you an idea.

I got some in trade from Dave and Trish - haven't eaten any yet, but it germinated in 3 days - fast out of the gate. Now if I can get the pups (10 month old border collie thugs!) to leave it in the pots long enough to grow a bit, I'll be happy to tell you how it tastes!

Thank you both! It will be fun watching it grow. So cool to have people send seeds from all over the country!!

Hey since you are talking lettuce here, Just thought I would ask ya'll if you have ever eaten this lettuce or plain leaf lettuce cut up with green onions and hot fatback grease poured over it?? I know it must sound a bit strange but it is sooo goood!! I also like making redeye gravy and pouring it over this lettuce too! 1 little hint though, is you have to eat it in a hurry! b/c if the grease gets cold it ain't very good at all. but you should try it sometime, I even use bacon grease poured over it too.

Mollybee I have eaten wilted lettuce all my life. I love it but have to have corn bread w/it.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

LOL and here I was thinking that I would be the only one who eat it! It's good stuff ain't it?!! I always grow it just for that reason, and there is nothing like being able to go out in the garden and pick your own lettuce just for that reason. yum!!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I've had salads like that once or twice - very good! We saw a chef on FoodTV make a salad with a hot bacon grease dressing, too; I wish I could remember who it was. Emeril, maybe? Or Bobby Flay? Now I'm curious!! http://www.foodtv.com

DJ70, I myself have never had the "Drunken Woman lettuce" but I was talking about just plain ole leaf lettuce, but you can buy it in the stores too. Even in seed form. or fresh in the produce department at your local grocery store.
I think it is just about the same as the D woman kind too

Could it be Lollo Rosso?
