I DO NOT BELIEVE IT!!

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

White stuff is coming down and it's unheard of at this time of the year here!! What's going on???? We were in the 70s all last week!! Oh I could cry!! Spring where are you????

Circleville, OH(Zone 8b)

Boy we must have been lucky as we haven't gotten any of this storm yet.

Just keep it would ya, I want warmth.LOL

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Mike it's incredible!! I mean the flakes were huge and now as I post the sun is shining again and so am I!! Pretty cold though and tonight is going to be even colder - down in the 20s!! Ah well, who am I to complain - I'm just a mere gardener!!

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

sending warm thoughts your way! :-)

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes Lisa - you have plenty of those to spare :-) Thankyou!!!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

louisa, I'm hoping our snow is finally gone for the year. The ground is finally bare except for in the woods and the mountain tops. Tonight it's supposed to go down in the single numbers so we still have the cold to get through but next week it's supposed to start warming up.
I hope this will be the end of the snow for you too.

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

Louisa

Oh no! Did you get to plant all those plants in the garage?

OH NO Louisa!!! It just made 32 here this morning. I covered my clematis and asiatic lilies. Everything else is on it's own. But...it's about 54 now. Another cold one tonight and then I HOPE we're out of the woods...

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I am so sorry! It isn't fair, and I think we need to have a conference with Mother Nature and see if she needs some retraining. It seems her timing is off more and more, and it's wreaking havoc on us, her staff. For my part, I am going to plant a few things in case she decides to smile on my garden, but hold back on some more tender stuff. It's not likely we will have inclement weather this late, never have, but one never knows. Meanwhile, the pink viburnums the locals call Indian Hawthorne are blooming all over Austin.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Spring seems so aptly named since it springs the temperatures up and down and twists around until we are not sure if it is coming or going!

Hang in there dear friend! This too shall pass and the earth will again offer you warm soils to tend.

(Zone 5a)

Sorry to hear about the snow and I know excatly how you feel, I hope none of your plants were destroyed. It's suppose to be up in the sixties today but I don't think it's going to make it. I did have plans to do a little planting today but I guess not.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Louisa.....Weren't we just talking about your glorious weather? did we jinx it? it is gray and overcast with plenty of the wet stuff coming down :( we are supposed to get this for the next 10 days straight.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

It snowed here last night just after midnight. I couldn't even believe it. When we got up, everything was covered in a blanket of snow. It is gone now, but it is awful cool outside. Guess I am going to have to force myself to clean and do laundry. Waaaahhh!

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Tim never fear!!! The passifloras are in my bathroom :-) The snow didn't last for more than 10 mins before the sun came out and that's the way it stayed!! But cold!!! Went into the city and the wind was piercing!! I wonder if I'm too critical - please feel free to add your comments on this!! I saw two young mothers this morning at different places in town and both had little girls in tow who were I think about 3 or 4 years!! The mothers were wearing heavy jackets and the girls almost nothing at all. One had a short sleeved summer dress and the other a long sleeved thin T-shirt and skirt! Deep down I wanted to make some remark, but in a nice diplomatic way. Of course I didn't!! It just shakes me up!!

southeast, NE

It didn't snow here but it is so windy - coming straight out of the south. It is so dry too that the dust is really blowing with the wind. Even the cows are waivering as the walk! I'm sure it has got to be blowing in some kind of a storm.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

I loathe the wind more than anything else and we too have had some really strong gusts for about a week now. Naturally some shrubs can't take it constantly so they are suffering from wind burn!! Coupled with the cold they are struggling at best!!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I too loathe the wind! I know it has a purpose, but it is so obnoxious as it goes about its appointed rounds. My deceased daughter loved it, and played with it over my shoulder as I carried her feverish little self into the hospital once, so I give it points it otherwise wouldn't get. About the children, don't worry. I know how determined my five year old granddarling can be, and sometimes she makes us fear the authorities will take her away if they see her. She decides what to wear, since she was three, and if we force her to change, she will be a miserable companion. Her mother has resorted to carrying supplementary clothing in her backpack in case she needs a defense.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Aimee this was a cold day with a biting cold wind. It was only about 40F in the city this morning!! Yea, I know, nothing worse than a clucking hen!!!!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, I would have dealt more firmly with my own children, but today rearing children is different. I sympathize with young mothers who are caught in this dilemma, because I know what a battle royal it can be. I sometimes think Lillian will surely catch a deadly disease from exposure, but no amount of bribery or threats will sway her. Having discarded my wool sweater hundreds of times, I understand a little of what she is about.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

If you say so :-)

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

My daughter would wear her coat when it was 110 degrees outside and my son would take his off and loose it when it was 28 degrees. Kids are impossible! Fortunately the ones that are exposed to the elements tend to have fewer colds for some reason...never under stood why that was.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

They build up immunity!

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

I can understand your concern, Louisa. I would have felt the same and not even thought of Aimee's excellent point. I'll bet that's what it was.

When I was a kid, I HATED wearing that many clothes! Mom tells a story of when it snowed once (one of the eight times since I've been alive *grin*) and she bundled my little self up so she could take me outside. While she was doing the same to Little Brother and rounding up Big Sis, I went right on outside. By the time she got the others ready and opened the door, there I sat, playing in the snow in only a diaper, at the end of a trail of footprints and discarded clothes! LOL! She had to put buttons on my coat with tight holes to keep it on me 'til I was five!! ROTFLOL!

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

lol Wingnut - I have a GD that would do exactly the same if her mum just blinked!!! But oh my goodness, I can see you now and I'm shivering....lol!!! Zany I know kids have a mind of their own but I wish I knew how they manage to stay comfortable in extreme temps!!

Metabolism is prepared to take care of them in case of emergency. Think of the times you've heard of a baby being abandoned in a cold place, and showing no signs of permanent damage when found. Their systems are able to slow down to conserve resources under those conditions. A child who drowns in cold water will be far less likely to suffer brain damage than one who drowns in the friendly warmth of the tub or pool at home, as well as having a better chance of reviving. Most people actually think a baby needs more bundling than an adult, but the opposite is true. If you don't need a wrap, the baby doesn't need much, either. They will sleep better if they are kept cool. And some studies have shown that babies born in cool months get a jump in intelligence for the first year. Babies kept in cool environments average higher IQs in childhood. Finally, a child runs at a much higher level of activity than an adult. Their steps are smaller, so they must take more to keep up. They are likely to be jumping all over the place, running ahead, then back to us, while we are walking sedately along. If their lips are pink, their nail beds are pink, and their breathing regular, they are fine. Feel the back of their necks and under their arms; you will probably feel warmth. If they have a hat or headcovering on, you might find their head to be actually moist. I have asked more than one pediatrician about these things, as I was a very young mother with many older women around to fret, and these are the things I have been told by the medics and their nurses.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Aimee I know what you say is all true. Especially about babies and how we have to provide a cool environment for them. Everything else makes sense too!!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

But it still offends the maternal nature to see a young child in inappropriate attire. I know.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes, Aimee, you're right ~ all people, both children and adults, have a better chance to be revived from clinical death if they are cold. But, children have a MUCH better chance of it than adults. I was an EMT for ten years with the local volunteer EMS and that was always stressed in every class I took ~ NEVER EVER EVER give up on a child, especially if you found him cold. I thank God that I never had to put that particular teaching to use.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

snowed here on sunday-didnt stick! I need spring!!!

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

I think we might just have seen the last of the winter (keeping my fingers crossed). Three nights of really low temps and today is going to be wonderful - in the 70s. At last I shall be able to 'garden'!! Dori, cheer up love - it's coming to you soon!! Now I want to check on friends who might have had really bad weather - hope they are all safe!! Thank you Wingnut for stressing the point that Aimee made!!
