I know this was discussed before but I thought I'd post since it just happened to me. I am using Explorer and I only have one window open, which is DG and when I clicked to read the Jokes and Chat forum I got a pop up window. Is that odd or what?
popups?
Do you have your email open, too? There are (irritating) emails that can automatically open popups if they are in your preview pane.
I was getting mysterious popups too. After some investigation, I discovered they were coming through my Callwave program, which I promptly uninstalled.
No popups on DG. You most certainly have something else running that is causing the popups.
Dave
LOL. Once awhile back when I clicked onto DG, I heard this really weird music; sounding like a slot machine; and thought my mind had gone for sure. I just couldn't figure out what was going on cause I knew that Dave wouldn't have that sort of thing here in the garden but then someone mentioned that it may be a pop-up and sure enough after checking, I found the silly thing and made me feel better just knowing that I haven't lost my mind........well, not all the way anyway.
Yes, there are some programs that will make popups appear even if there is only one window open, like IndaShade mentioned. I can't remember what program it was that did it to me, but it got deleted. Agravating little %^$&*#@s!
Seems advertising is everywhere nowadays. I even read somewhere recently that some companies are even talking to people about putting ads on TOMBSTONES! Of all places! And not just little nameplates telling who made the stone, but real ads! How unnerving!
If you have any games that kids or grandkids hav down loaded, they will cause pop-ups too.
well, can't say that I had anything weird installed since I just had to do a reformat. I didn't have anything open but DG but oh well, guess it must have been one of those unsolved mystery things........maybe my computer is haunted :)
Flowox ,I know what you mean I was surprised too when i saw it just now. I poped it off, but it was about" what is the name of bushes wife? and it had about 4 choices .Its a mystery to me too.Maybe i wasn't signed out of my mailbox though I try to remember and only have one program running at a time.OH,WELL.NO WORRY i JUST CLICK IT OFF.
Gator is famous for this. If you're not careful and click OK on some pop-up's upon leaving a site, Gator will AUTOMATICALLY install, and it pops up its own ads. Run msconfig out of your start menu and see what all shows up in your start-up. You may find there are things there you didn't even know about. Another culprit is eBate's Moe Money companion application. All sorts of junk out there - ugh.
when I turn my PC on I do control-alt-delete and end everything except for explorer and systray since I have Windows ME and it eats up my system resources like mad and I don't have Gator..........so when I say I don't have anything else open, I really mean, I don't have anything else open.........(Twilight theme music)
Tbis brings up another interesting subject. When going into msconfig. then startup, what is the absolute bare minimum we need to operate? I have been in there and unchecked a lot of things, but there's still a fair amount. I'm afraid to go any further, as I don't know what some of the stuff is.
Good question, Joan. This guy has a ton of Windows information on his site: http://www.rselby.com/Windows.html I just found it doing a search for msconfig information. Here's the msconfig section on the page: http://www.rselby.com/Windows.html#6
HTH - it sure helped me! :)

Ok, I have everything shut down and I mean everything and I'm cruising along on DG and I get a popup and the header in the popup has the same addresss.........http://davesgarden.com/forums.......something or another.......anyway, what's going on? I AM getting these popups, not very often but I do get them and I don't have anything else running.......heck, I hardly have anything in here to begin with since I just had to reformat. Am I living in the twilight zone or what? :)
I don't know, flowox, I've never seen anything like it.
DG is not causing it. I don't even use JavaScript or target tags in the a tags, so popups simply don't occur by my doing.
I hate 'em.
There must be a bug or something in your browser.
Question: Are these popups advertisements, or just popups with information in them? What is the content of these windows that are being created?
Dave
I am watching this carefully, because I know Susan is quite knowledgeable about computers, and I am quite not. If it can happen to her, it could drive me up a wall. I have noticed lately that I have a real bumper crop of these things, but didn't think there was anything I could do about it. I didn't have them until I began using some links that forced me to open IE, and now they are appearing every time I open anything. I am considering shutting down this puter, getting a new modem and using good old HP, so there is none of this already on my hard drive or wherever they reside. But I want to learn where they originated.
I'm using the new version of IE but even with the old one right after I reformatted it came up. It's advertising, usually about dating or something like that. will have to read it next time, I guess. I hate them so usually just close them down but the last one I expanded the window and it had the DG address at the top with a popup tag at the end. Will write it down exactly next time it happens. It only happens when a page takes a little longer than usual to load. When pages are loading fast on DG then I don't get popups but when it's a bit slow they appear. this is really odd
I have seen two of these ads so far, and paid more attention. they have the Daves heading. one asks what is the presidents wife's name? gives four possible answers. The other one is a question about madonna.choices of answer.so if you are confused think how I feel since
I don't know nearly what you do. Oh, well I do like you, clcik off before I read. usually happens when I am posting and won't let the typing go through until deleted.
That IS very strange. I've never seen or received anything like that.
I know that signing up for some websites will get you on all sorts of mailing lists which can send you odd messages and pop-ups; some you might want to be on, others you don't. DH likes football and participates in some chat sites and websites relating to football and fantasy football. And that has resulted in us being on some rather odd mailing lists. Fortunately *most* of them seem to honor their opt-out provisions, which I religiously find and request :)
I have a program to stop this stuff, so I don't get anything YET on DG but the ad people are working hard to overcome these programs. They even have some pop up ads that have no close button. These infuriate me. Someone in one of the forums said that if you click anywhere on the offending window and then press control + w it will close without having to reboot. I don't understand the ad people's thinking I wouldn't buy their stuff if it was a nickle.
I am running Mandrake linux 8.1 and using Mozilla for my browser and I have never had a pop up while visiting DG!
I have IE 5.0 and I have never seen a pop up when in DG. This sounds like a real mystery.
I'm using 5.0 and haven't ever seen one either. there is a site that I get a link to in my email a lot, and it gives about 5 pop-ups before it's through. just a little joke/feel good thing to pass on to others site, and everytime I think I'm at the last pop-up, I get another.
this is what it says:
Which sexy star graced the first issue of Playboy? Marilyn…
Lee
Monroe
Kelly
and this is the address it shows
http://davesgarden.com/threads.php?user=flowox
Can you take a screenshot of it, next time it happens, and mail the jpg image to me at dave@davesgarden.com?
dave
sure, this time I got this one. but before I read your post so will take a pic of it next time
(http://winnerschoice.2y.net/add04/add04.html)
The hyperlink doesn't work now.
It might not be good idea to post links to the sites themselves, because they could dump malicious code onto visitors' computers.
Speaking of which, have you noticed how sometimes when you leave a site, a window pops up asking if you want to save/open program (like when you download something purposely)? Many people will click yes/open because they think it's some browser add-on they need, but all it does is give permission for something yucky like Gator to download and install. Sneaky bas****s.
GW, when you click on it and it gives you a page that says "Not Found", look in the address bar and take the ")" off the end of the url. It'll work then. :-)
nefer...you mentioned some popups that have no x to close it out.I used to reboot to get rid of them till I discovered you can go to the task bar and right click on the little box for the ad and you can close it there.Try it next time...Gin
If the pop-up is in the forefront of your screen, you can also hit Alt+F4, which closes the active window. Save yourself some mouse mileage. ;)
