Photo quality in DG?

When I take pictures and resize or sharpen them on my pc and then upload them to DG, they look much worse than on my pc. Somehow 'oversharpened' or scratched.. Not very nice. So does it happen to photos while they get the copyright text?

I've not noticed any difference on images I've uploaded. What resolution/dimensions are you using for the ones you upload? If they are very large, it's possible that they are compressed when uploaded here; I remember Dave saying a while back that he was making it so images would be resized if too large.

I have many sized images... little and big ones, but never too big. So it isn't about the size. :/

Yes, resizing does occur on overly large images. The resizing does not occur on images in your journal or tradelist, but it does everywhere else (including the forums).

People are hitting those pictures mostly on dialup modems, so I resize them and give them a 75% compression ratio, in order to make it a little faster (well, about 300% faster in most cases).

So...If we save JPG's at 640x480 at 75% compression, we should see virtually the same images when posted as we saw on our local systems, right?

Yes, GW. 800x600 also won't be altered.

Dave, the 75% compression is quite a lot.. some of my photos looks awful here, why others' photos stay much better? :/ If some photo looks good on my pc it always looks much worse here. The compression could be 55 % or less, hahaha.. :P

What dimensions do you usually use when you upload photos, evert?

I don't have any normal dimensions to my photos, the sized vary a lot.. if some photo looks better when small I upload a smaller version of it.

If the size of width and height is not evenly divisible, the image will be distorted when it is resized on my system.

640x480, for example, is perfectly divisible and creates nice thumbnails and compressed beautifully.

640x481, however, is not, and slightly (or occasionally severely) distorts when you upload it.

I take mosto fmy photos as 640 X 480 but then there is something in the photos that are not needed there, you know ;) Anyway, I'll try to upload the photos as 640 X 480..

Sounds like a plan. Upload a photo as 640x480 and see how the quality turns out. Do let me know!
