Trouble is, Dave, that you're so close I hardly ever plan on a fishing trip to your area. It's more like turning to Friend Wife on a Thursday evening and saying, "hey, let's go fish the Smokies this weekend."
Besides which, you ain't got time to fish. ;>)
Dave's Garden party?
Well, next time you spontaneously decide to hit the Smokies to fish, I'll make time. ;-)
Dave
Dave, Brook -- My DH and son would also love to drown worms and torture fish with ya'll..........I will be happy to stay with the "wimmen" and just play, chat and cook. (However, I refuse to cook, clean OR eat fish!). Ya'll are on your own for that one.
Ft Loudon is another site my guys would love to see......gee, this trip just gets better and better! Don't know how we'll cram it all into just a couple of days!
Mom24Cats, did you ever _try_ to drown a worm? Those suckers don't seem to need air, or much of anything else. It's like trying to suffocate a cockroach.
Other than for crappie (in which case, I sometimes drown minnows)I don't use live bait myself. Given my druthers, it's a long rod and artificial flies for just about everything. Short of that, an ultralight spinning rod, and a handful of dimunitive lures is my preference.
Eat a fish? Not me. Especially if you're talking about trout. I wouldn't put one of those slimey things in _my_ mouth.
Brook: I agree with you on the trout, but what about bass? Don't you love the taste of a freshly caught Striper, cooked on the grill?!

No Brook, I've never tried to drown a worm, but have seen the drowned in puddles before. Remember, I'm the type that doesn't hurt critters........even if I don't carry a PETA card! :-) However, cockroaches, flies, mosquitos and scorpions don't fit into my "don't harm" category! Too bad they're not more of a sport for getting rid of! Although the Palmetto bugs (overgrown cockroaches on steriods) that we had in Charleston would have made good .22 target practice they were so big.
At least we agree on one thing -- I wouldn't put a bite of trout in my mouth again for anything. That's why I don't eat fish today as it is......used to go fishing w/ my dad as a kid and had a bad experience with some we caught that mom cooked up that night (I was getting the stomach flu......yuck!)
How 'bout we just eat something a little more "neutral" like fried or BBQ'd chicken......and just leave the "fishin" to those who want those slimy things! :-)
Dave: Call that a striper? I've used shad for bait that were larger than that. :-)
Seriously, you need to go out with guide Gerald Bates on Lake Cumberland sometime, and learn his sucker-fishing secrets. The _smallest_ linesides we take using his method runs about 15 pounds; and average in the 20s.
No, I don't care for stripers, grilled or any other way. I'm just not much of a fish eater. In fact, when catch & release came on strong back in the early 60s, it was real easy for me to jump on that bandwagon. I don't eat 'em anyway, so why not wear that nice bright halo as well!
Mom24Cats: Fishing---especially flyfishing---isn't about killing fish. It about problem solving. There are two kinds of people: those who compete with others, and those who compete with themselves. Fishing is for the second group. Me, I only compete with Brook. So flyfishing in particular was made for me.
oh fish!!!
yummy!!!
i don't know how to fish, but i'll eat just about any fish you catch.
i could go vegetarian if it wasn't for fish and other seafood. oh yeah, that and fried chicken. i'm hopeless. no will power when it comes to food.
thank you dad for the fact that i can still see my toes.
