Austrian Pines

Hendersonville, TN

I had 3 Austrian Pines planted and spaced 10 feet apart at the suggestion of local nursery. To be used for screening
a blank brick wall of neighbor's house. I have since been told by numerous people that they are planted much too close together. 1) Are they too close together? 2) Should
I request the nursery to come out and move 2 of them farther apart at no additional cost?

The pine will measure approx 35ft x 20ft in 20 years, ultimate height 90ft!! It grows quite fast in it's earlier years and then slows down! I have seen them spaced about 10 feet apart to form an inpenetrable hedge. This UK link I find a great help as I also need to start thinking of windbreakers etc. Here you go:-

Thanks for the input and for the UK link! I think I'm going to move them to 15 ft. apart. We don't plan on being in this same house in 20 years, but I'd like to establish the landscape so that it can be enjoyed for a long time.

PS I love that handle (dirtdobber) or as they say here user name

Dirtdobber I love your idea of leaving something for the future, not just for you but for other people to enjoy. Well done!! I shall be planting trees that I probably will never see grow to maturity but at least I'm providing a sense of continuity, a place for birds, creatures and humans alike :-)

Thank you, Louisa. I hadn't thought of it before, but, you know, leaving something of beauty for someone else to enjoy is one way we can make a contribution to the world around us. So often, many of us think we have nothing to contribute or feel guilty for not having made a difference in the world. Gardeners are keepers of God's garden. And we love it!
