Triple the speed of DG - here's how

If you are using Internet Explorer, please follow these instructions:

1. Open the Internet Options property sheet
* If using IE 4, this is located under the View menu
* If using IE 5, this is located under the Tools menu
2. Select the Advanced tab
3. Under HTTP 1.1 settings, verify that Use HTTP 1.1 is selected

Netscape users should already be enjoying the increased speed. Today I added "gzip compression" to the site, and all HTTP 1.1 browsers should be getting DG anywhere from 3 to 5 times faster than before.

Thanks Dave :-)

thanks Dave, mine is checked and has been but for some reason it seems really slow to get in here

Google's been indexing all day long today, so nobody will notice any difference until things calm down a bit from that. let's see if anyone notices a difference tomorrow.

dave

Mine is checked and yes, it is moving much faster! Thank you for whatever it is that you did :-) vic

Google must have gone to bed, things are really zipping along now thanks Dave.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

really? things are still slow for me :(
very unusual too

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I have version 6.0 Went into check the settings and mine is already checked. Things are still moving slow. Any other options for me?

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

I've got to get my DH to download me Netscape. I'm missing out on lots. grrrr..... "T" :)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Do you think Netscape would be better? What about my bookmarks? Do they move to the new browser?

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

yes Cala, if you are using Explorer now and download Netscape, it'll transfer all your bookmarks

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

You can back up your bookmarks, too. In IE, just click FILE - IMPORT AND EXPORT and follow the prompts to back up your bookmarks and cookies. When you back up your bookmarks, click on the root folder in the tree it will show you of the bookmark folders so you get all of them.

I have not used Netscape since they had the beta of version 6 a while back; it ran so slowly I uninstalled it and went back to IE. I cut my teeth on Netscape and never thought I'd like IE, but now I think I like it better.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I used version 6 for awhile, a very short while, and went back to version 4.7. I like it so much better.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

I already have this checked Dave. I have noticed a great slow down since lastnight at around 10:00 PM. All other sites come up fine. Just thought I would let you know. This is just not a small slowdown either. I mean it is worse than when I was on 56k. This page took 41.169198989868 seconds to generate

That's the CPU GH, and the speedups I did yesterday don't affect my CPU. Once the page is generated, it is now compressed prior to being sent. That's where the performance gain is.

I am always trying to optimize the code on DG to make it faster from the CPU standpoint. Unfortunately, a lot of the features of DG (especially the forums) are extremely CPU intensive and take a while to generate. Sometime in the future I will be rewriting the forum code from scratch to make it a more optimized feature.

When I originally wrote the forum code, I had no idea that it would get almost a quarter-million posts, and performance would become an issue.

Mine says using 1.1 under proxy, just what does this mean Dave. It also has just 1.1 as well.

(Zone 5a)

Dave I am using IE 5.5 and the HTTP 1.1 is already checked, but I also have another one that says HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections Microsoft VM which is not checked.I still have problems with connecting to DG from email links and when I post a questions. I am using WindowsME and have plenty of memory, with Road Runner cable service which is usually very fast.I also keep my cache clean and do a scan disc as well as a check on C drive for mistakes. Is there any help that you can give me?

One more question, can you please tell me why I am getting pops up when I visit DG? I thought if we were paying members we wouldn't have to put up with pop ups here.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

I have always used Netscape and just got the cable hookup and it took16.476866006851

windsurffer, I can guarantee to you that there are no popups on DG, for subscribers or anyone else. We just don't have them. If you are experiencing popups, they are coming from some other site that you've been to.

I get some Netscape popups from time to time, and it doesn't appear they are from any single site I visit. I don't think I have gotten them when I've been on DG. I just close them and go on, but hadn't stopped to think about why they are there in the first place. I no longer do a lot of random surfing, since so many sites seem to eventually result in porn or other unwanted emails. But I have clicked on hyperlinks here that took me to questionable sites and then I got popups. I will try to recall the details and will note more if it happens again.

This thread took 4.56 seconds, Netscape 4.7 with broadband (cable). Thankfully, faster than it had been, so it must be working, at least for me. Thanks, Dave!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Took 3.32 seconds for me. That's interesting about the CPU usage; I hadn't thought about that. What processor are you running on your server? I'm so dim about server stuff - I just know desktop and network stuff (somewhat).

Windy: Do you have Gator installed by chance? Or any other little tweaky software downloads? Often THEY are to blame for the pop-up's. Gator is especially known for this; Gator even puts its own advertisers' banner ads OVER the actual banner ads at sites. Nice for them, lousy for the actual advertisers who paid to have their products viewed.

(Zone 5a)

No I have the pop up stopper so that I don't get them so offten but when one pops up I get this sound. Sometimes I can't even open Road Runner's home page with it turned on, it will keep X-ing it out because of the pop ups.
I have tried to enter DG and got the ping sound and the little X so I assume that it was an add poping up.
I will watch more closely to see if it happens again. I am not doubting Dave's word because it could be the program.
I did have to ask to see if it was right.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Windy - you could try AnalogX's POW program. It's a pop-up stopper, but it lets you add the ones to it that you want to. If you mainly cruise the same sites, you'll get almost all the annoying repeats like the XOOM ads and the domain name registrations, debt reduction ads, etc. When an ad pops up you don't like, you just right-click the icon in your system tray and choose Add/Delete Popup, then double-click the names of the pop-up's in the bottom of the window and click Done. That's it. It's pretty slick - I love it. :)

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

Dave, thanks, I was actually able to follow your directions and I saw that http 1.1 was checked. having much better success since i got my new machine.was upgraded. learning so much more.thanks for help every one, I will still be pestering you with questions.

(Zone 5a)

Thanks GW, I will check it out and see if it works better than this one, I hope it's a free one because I have spent all my money on plants lol.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I managed to follow the instructions and WOW! The increased speed is amazing! Thanks DAVE!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Yep, Windy, that one is free. :)

Kool, thanks again.
