Let's be careful...

When you add a definition or information to the Plants Database or to Gardenology, nobody says you have to completely "reinvent the wheel" and develop your information entirely from scratch. However, if you are relying on another source for the bulk of your entry, please keep in mind the general guidelines for what constitutes plagiarism, and make sure your entry won't violate those guidelines.

We received a pointed email from someone who was (understandably) upset that someone had copied verbatim a long entry on a plant in our database. I did a side-by-side comparison of his website to what we had, and he was right - it was a "cut and paste" job.

I don't want to discourage anyone from contributing to either of these resources, but we do need to take care that we don't steal the work of anyone else. So when you're creating an entry, put it in your own words, or give credit where it's due. Thanks!!!!

Thanks go_vols for the reminder. This has made me wonder about my journal also. I have spent many hours on it, and part of my journal is so I can reference the plants and seeds that I have without jumping through numerous sites. I did this for my own information, not even thinking about it being open for others to see also. I hadn't even thought about this issue when I did it, but I have now marked my journal as private until I can get all the information that I borrowed credited to the proper site and/or people.
