Shampoo and conditioner survey

Plymouth, MI(Zone 6a)

My DH is going to kill me if I don't quit buying shampoos that I dont use because I dont think they work good so I stick them up in the closet. I have colored thin hair and would really be happy if I could find something that works well.It is medium length and I need some body without striping the color! It gets expensive buying these large bottles and then not liking the stuff. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.I am curous to know what you all use and if you really like it..

High Springs, FL(Zone 8b)

My first suggestion would be to quit buying the large bottles!! Buy trial sizes whenever possible. Check out manufacturers web sites to see if they offer samples. You might also go to a beauty supply store and ask for advice.

As a last resort, mix together all the shampoo you've accumulated and maybe you'll come up with a new formula!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Meems, I might be able to help! I have very flyaway hair. No body. "I ain't got nobody" is my theme song. But shampoo won't correct the body problem, anyway, no matter what you pay or how you use it. Go to a beauty supply store and ask for Vavoom forming gel. It will seem expensive, but you only need a little bit, about a half teaspoon combed into damp hair. Be sure it gets to the roots and is well distributed, let it dry naturally, then comb it out. I sort of form my hair to control some cow licks and what my grandma called a rooster tail, while it's still wet. If you have to use a dryer, you will have to develop your own method, but my DD uses it and drys hers. It is the best product I've found. I tried some of their other products, like the mousse, but this is the only one I need. I use a shampoo by a different maker and alternate it with Neutrogena every few times. But it doesn't seem to matter which shampoo I use as long as I use the gel. So I buy the shampoo for the clean fresh smell. I don't use Suave or the other really cheap ones anymore, they strip my color and leave my hair dull.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Use the excess you have stored to bath the dog.

Montrose, PA(Zone 5a)

I use Pantene for colored or permed hair.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I just use White Rain. It's cheap, and gives me body because it gets the oil out. You know how you have oily hair when you're a teen and it's supposed to get drier as you age? Well, mine didn't. It can look like road-kill in a day if I don't use a shampoo for oily hair. And White Rain works for me. I also like to use a little lemon juice as a rinse. It makes my hair shine and helps protect the color

or use up your old shampoos for fine washables...delicate items that you hand wash....!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

The pH might not be right for your dog if it has sensitive skin. Most small breeds do, and it can cause them to have allergic reactions. I would approach this with caution but it might be fine. Shampoo that you aren't going to use any other way can be good for shaving and handsoap. Like Amanda, I use it for delicate items. The mail samples are great for traveling, to use for hand laundry and hand soap on the road.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I too seem to end up with large bottles of shampoos that I decided to try and then decided I didn't like. I started using them for bubble bath when the kids visit. They love the bubbles and the smells and it sure makes cleaning the tub easier!

Decatur, MI(Zone 5a)

Meems I also have thin hair and I color it whice help,
but I find a shampoo at I really like,
I went to the beauty supply store, and got RX professional prescription for dry-sun-damaged or chemically-treated hair
use very little, it was $399 it is very good and I also got Biotera Styling gel, firm control
I blow dry than use a curling iron on it,
look like I have more hair

I have been doing hair for the past 20 years. We sell Sukesha, Framesi, and Redken ,Roffler. If you have colored treated hair~ Use shampoo fr colored treated hair.!!! Also, VERY important. DO a deep conditioning treatment Once a week! I am not talking hot oil. get yourself a salon product that you put on and leave on 20 minutes. Shampoo off. Invest in a good shampoo and conditioner. You WILL notice a huge difference.Do not use Pantene. It is wax based. It makes the hair feel good, It builds up on the hair. Your color will NOT take evenly . Try a small bottle of professional to start. If you like it. get the large/. It is the better buy. Professional products will give your hair better shine and control. If they didn;t work. I know I wouldn;t be selling them. I live in a very depressed area. Our products fly off the shelf. Take what you like and leave the rest. Check the comments of the other professional hair cutters listed above. For a $20 investment....You will have great products that work on your hair. And I can honestly tell you .....You will NOT go back to your other products. Did you know that anyone can make a shampoo and sell it???? The FDA does not control hair care products. The choice is up to you. Like I said. I have been doing hair for 20 years. If you use good products, It sure makes MY job a hell of alot easier. I do not get a comession any more for selling products. My boss could not afford me. It was cheaper for him to give me a weeks paid vacation instead of 10%

Plymouth, MI(Zone 6a)

Thanks Mings, I am going to give my box load to family and friends. I havent tried any of the salon products, you are right $20.00 is not a bad investment if it does a good job.
I am trying to find something that will not strip the color yet gives me some body. Are any of the products you mention better then the others?? I have heard of Redkin but not the others. Thanks again.

Get any salon shampoo for colored treated hair and give it the 1 bottle challange. I promise , You will not go back to the other. Plus, salon products are more concentrated. You will use less. Do not judge a shampoo on How much it lathers. Do 2 shampoos. And watch that hair spray too. Once you get our new product, Dump a handfull of baking SODA in your hand and make a paste with your new shampoo. Lather....let sit a few minutes, That will help to strip those waxes off your hairshaft. then. rinse and do a normal shampoo. please, Let me know what you think. Look in your phone book. If you can find a Framesi salon. They have EXCELLENT products. Just tell them you need for colored treated hair. You WILL notice a huge difference. honset

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, I for one am going to find some Framesi! I have butt-length hair and it's constantly breaking off this time of year. Mimi, would you recommend using a deep conditioner more often in winter?

Meems, you might could give all those shampoos to a helping center or homeless shelter. Food stamps don't cover shampoo and homeless people don't get food stamps anyway, so either one you choose, surely would help.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Wingnut. I hope you are getting trims regularly. And make sure your head is forward , or someone will take 3 inches and not a half inch! If your hair is in bad shape, you might want to think of releasing a few inches. setting them free! I have had one length hair to my elbows and I have had it an inch long all over. I know what it is like to have someone tell you "your ends are trashed' Healthy hair grows a half inch a month. It grows from the scalp. So, if it is growing from the scalp, and busting at the ends. you aren;t getting anywhere. Get yourself a good mask conditioner and start taking good care of it. It will be glorious again. Honest. Leave the mask on 20 minutes. Once a week. Wrap your hair in plastic. you know those bags they give you to take your groceries home in? they make great treatment bags.I always have one on my head. I go outside in the sun in it and wash the car. my neighbors are used to seeing me with a blue cap on my head! Those that dont like it. TOO BAD!!!

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Do you recommend a specific kind of mask conditioner? Or should I just walk into the salon my sis goes to and ask for one? She really likes the job the hairdresser there does on her and I do, too. "And make sure your head is forward , or someone will take 3 inches and not a half inch!" No kidding, Mimi! I've had that happen more than once, which makes me leery of going back. That's probably the problem ~ it's been so long since I've had a trim. I did it myself the other day ~ put it all in a ponytail on top of my head and trimmed the ends about 3/4 to 1 inch. It stopped some of it, but there's still a lot of breakage. I've been kicking around the idea of "setting free" a couple more inches (*grin, Mimi!*) That'll probably stop the majority of the rest of the breaking, huh?

I really should start taking care of it. Beforehand, I couldn't find the time between the goats, the chickens, the garden...know what I mean? ;-) But I need to MAKE the time before my head ends up looking like the edges of a well-done fried egg. A blue head once a week would be better than that! LOL! Thanks for the advice!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Mimi, since we're on a hair thread....and you're in the "know" what do you recomment for flaky scalp? I have very short hair that I am trying to grow out (we'll see if I can make it thru that icky stage - hair touching my ears)
very little body, and flakes.....I have been using "t" gel, I heard dissolving an aspirin in your regular shampoo. speaking of shampoo, I know what you're recomending for treated hair, but what would you suggest for fine/limp uncolored hair?

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

pepple~what I really recommend for fine , limp, short hair IS to color it! it will give you #1. Tons of body#2 a new lease on life. #3. Don;t be afraid to go alburn...think about it.
Flaky wise, I honestly do not know what is out there on the shelf. I just use salon products since I have total access to them at work. Sorry. Redkne makes a good dandruff one. Make sure you are rinsing well.

Wingnut~ you need to take time for you. it only takes a half hour to get a haircut. I think you could squeeze that in once every 6 weeks. Don;t you??? And you will love the results. "How Important is it?' VERY! Its a new century! have You had a cut since we have been in the 2000's...you are worth it.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

mimi, I have been toying with the idea of coloring my hair, a deep burgundy maybe? quite a change from a blond....
But, quite frankly, I have been scared to color my hair. What if i absolutely hate it? then I would have to wait for it to grow out, and wouldnt that look funny, deep burgundy with blond roots?

Salem, OR(Zone 8a)

Hi there, I just saw this thread about hair and thought I'd throw my two bits in. I have fine colored hair, fairly longish, below the shoulders, so I can tie it back for gardening and what not. Anyway, I was using Biolage deep conditioner, but recently found that the new Clairol Renewal 5X products are really the ticket for me! The green bottle of revitalizing shampoo, for color treated hair, and the silver tube of hydration therapy. Not very expensive, coupons come out often for $1 off, and they are available everywhere. After shampooing I also spray a leave-in conditioner in. I use Biolage Daily leave in Tonic, and it's nice. Helps to prevent fading and sun damage. Also, I have found that if I always use the same shampoo, it starts to not be what it started out to be, so I use another brand a couple times a week. This is usually some cheap brand, nothing fancy, just what ever my DH is using.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

so, your Dh colors his hair to! thats great! that way you both can use the same shampoo for colored treated hair. Love it!

Plymouth, MI(Zone 6a)

Thanks mimi, for all the info....You sure know your hair!!!!
I think we have all benefited. Thanks Daves Garden girlfriends for all your ideas, it really is appreciated. I am glad your all here. This hair thing is really an issue with me... I dont care what you are wearing or how good you look if your hair is looking bad ya just dont feel good about yourself.
Meems

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Take what you like and leave the rest. None of you will be sitting in my chair. It would be nice if you were!I would get you all into great shape. The best thing I can tell you to do is get a regular trim. Use good products. If you color... or perm use producs for that purpose.Wash the car and the dog with the products you have that are not correct and treat yourself to the knowledge listed above. Would you put koolaide in your gas tank? I think not! If you don;t think that you are worth it , no one else will. If YOU feel good about yourself. It boils over into each and everything you do. You are allowed to put paint on that barn! don;t you feel better with lipstick on? If you feel better about yourself, You will have a happier you. and family and garden....

Thanks Meems and everyone here participating,I did learn alot "lurking",lol' I trimmed my hair last night, forget usually but what a difference' I don't frequent beauty shops as with naturally curly hair,it doesn't come out right ever, lol' My hair has a "mind of its own"so to speak' Not complaining but when the barrel of your curling iron is 2inches around and still after smoothing it all out,the weather does "its thing" back to the "tumbleweed look",lol' I was always the "model"for my girlfriends in cosmetology school, fun and for years they took care of me,lol'Mingsmimi, you are soo RIGHT,when ya look good ya feel Good, true''Everything effects our hair,it is a living thing,so if you are on medications,be sure to let your beautician know BEFORE any treatments also''Very important'I used to study and once thought I'd become a beautician but didn't have the legs for it,oh well' Great thread''' Sis'

Salem, OR(Zone 8a)

Hi Mingsmimi adn everyone else!Just thought I'd clear up the thing about DH coloring his hair. I had to laugh, since he has threatened to a few times, as his once reddish hair is fading to gray, and he is three year younger than I am. But I really meant that I use a his regular shampoo once in a while to bring back the "spring" in my other color treated hair shampoo. You know when DH threatens to color his hair and beard, I always think how great he looks with the gray and with the wrinkles, too. Men are a little luckier than women in that respect, I think. Also, I saw your sweet dog in you homepage, and I posted a pet photo today of my big baby Thor, on the pets page. I lost a little similar to your ming about a year and a half ago. Still not over it! I think it's great that Dave figured our how we can post to individual forums now!

Crossville, TN

I believe that my Mother was frightened by the back end of a horse when she was carrying me! I have hair like a horse's tail...thick, dry, and coarse! Nature has colored my hair salt and pepper...wish she would hurry up and get the complete job done so I'd have nice grey hair like my 3 sisters!

I hadn't had a perm in my hair for about 4 years, so when we moved to AZ I started going to a new (to me) beautician. She put something on my hair and left it for 30 minutes...to offset the medications I am on she said. Anyhow...I got the best perm I have had in years...and as we get older they don't seem to take as well, or our hair doesn't seem as managable, as it did when we were young! Another "downside" of ageing. I just bought another big bottle of Pantene....looks like I goofed again! I'll have to pass it on the the granddogs, and buy some at my salon. Jo
(PSST...isn't it great to have our own beautician here on DG? And we don't even have to have an appointment!! Thanks Mimi!!!)

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Like I said ...I won;t be seeing any of you in my chair. take what you like and leave the rest. I just know what makes MY job easier. I don't know what anyone's incomes are and what they can afford. That is why I like Sukesha. It is cheaper to buy and is an excellent product. Those in New Hampshire MUST know it. Thats where it is from. Great product. That is all my family has used for 10years now. ATLEAST> Maybe even more. Just trying to help, if one person hears.I have done my job

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

THanks, Mimi! "Even the barn gets a coat of paint." Yah-ha-ha-ha! You're right! I'll be taking your advice and looking for those products you mentioned next trip into town. Thanks again!
