Mass Update - Happy, happy, joy, joy

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Yes, I sang the happy, happy joy joy song today (and if you've never heard it, you've probably never heard of Ren & Stimpy. Count your blessings for that. It was one of the dumbest cartoons to come along in a long time. Had an even dumber song they used to sing....) But I digress. Where was I? Oh, yes. I was VERY VERY HAPPY! Because I just added the same update to several plant entries in my journal. SIMULTANEOUSLY, as in I typed it once and I was done!

Oh, Dave - you ARE the man!!! Thank you so much - I was NOT looking forward to copying this over and over and over.....now if I can just get that stupid song out of my head!!!!

Thanks a lot, now that song is in MY head. This is the thanks I get for adding the Mass Action feature. ;-)

It is a cool feature isn't it? I needed it when I suddenly had to move 200 plants from the greenhouse to the kitchen, and didn't want to go through them ONE BY ONE with the entry. Mass action and baddy-bing-badda-boom all in one entry update!! WOO HOO!

See, if you need a feature added to DG, you just need to make it so that somehow I can't live without it, and it magically appears right away. This is the principle advantage of having a webmaster who uses the site as much as you do.

Sorry about the song transferance thing....didn't mean to let it rub off on you (but if you didn't already KNOW the song, it wouldn't be stuck in your head, so I'm only partially responsible here! hee hee)

One thing I noticed (but forgot to mention in the midst of my joy) is that I had to do some translating to figure out how to submit my entry; the "submit" button beneath the entry field had "add entry" on it. I figured it out pretty quickly, even in my euphoric state, but it'd probably be nicer if it said "submit" instead.....No big deal; the functionality was the most wonderful part, the rest is gravy!

Oh great - I just had to read the thread - Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy, GO VOLS!!!! (that was me using the seargent carter to gomer pile yell).

I can't wait to have a mass action big enough to use the feature with, lol! Hey, do all little tomato plants have a purple tint to the undersides of the leaves? I can't seem to remember seeing it before...

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Well, Gollllleeee, Sarge (shoot, you just can't spell that North Carolina drawl.....) So, you've seen/heard Ren & Stimpy, too huh?) In retrospect it was arguably better than Sponge Bob Square Pants or Cat/Dog - which both rank in my kids' top 5 favorites (ugh!!!!) If you have managed to miss those, definitely thank your lucky stars!!!

Ummm, my "Keepsake" tomatoes from Park Seed have a purple tint to their leaves, but since they're new (to me ), I chalked it up to it the variety. My others are too small to tell yet......but I bet Dave or Pete2 or Bud or.....(aw, just pick a name from the market growers and/or heirloom growers - they've all got waist-high tomatoes, I do believe! LOL!) and any of them can tell you if there's a strange tint to all of them, or if it's just yours. (oooooh - that would be weird, huh?)

Rapid City, SD(Zone 5b)

LOL, I see Dave's tomato pictures don't have any purple tint - probably some vitamin in the soil or something - they are really purple.

I hate to tell you but I LOVE Sponge Bob! What can I say - I'm just a big kid :) We have cartoons on around here most of the time. I remember when cartoons were only on Saturday morning (back in the day). My DS is, of course, horrified at the concept. Now having to see all the Scooby Doos over again, thats scary!

Rise: No purple tint here that I've detected. I'm at a loss as to why it's happening!

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

RiseAnn. I think the purple coloration on your tomato could be due to a phosphorus deficiency. When new leaves exhibit purple to purplish red color this is often the case particularly with tomatos. You might try adding some bonemeal. Hope this helps.

I quite like Ren & stimpy.

Alan.

I've got some bonemeal - I'll sprinkle some in and see what happens. Thanks :)

I've got a purple tint in the stems of my capanula... is this a phospherous deficiency issue too? I'm with go_vols on the Nicktoons, but dare I admit, I watch Poke'mon from time to time? (I teach Kindergarten, I think it's a job requirement...) :) Kathy

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Alan, you LIKE Ren & Stimpy? What about the other NickToons (Cat/Dog, Sponge Bob, et al ad nauseum?????)

Before you say yes, I should warn you I'm ready to pack my kids on the next plane to YOUR house. They can cure you of this problem in a fast-but-painful desensitization program. How? They'll just watch these cartoons nonstop (since that's how Nickelodeon shows them here), and most of the episodes have been re-run so many times my kids can and do recite the lines along with the characters....ugh!

Oh, Kathy - my condolences on Pokemon.....we seemed to have missed that craze, and I am grateful. My daughter's kindergarten class has had to have Pokemon cards confiscated almost every day (its mostly a few boys who seem to be nearly obsessed with trading and collecting them....)

But aren't kindergarteners wonderful, in that sticky, messy, not-quite-kid but not-a-baby anymore way? I'm in my daughter's classroom two days a week to help them with their reading program, and nowhere else in the world could I get such an enthusiastic welcome every time I walk in the door! I am guaranteed hugs (sometimes sticky, but always good), and compliments on my clothes and jewelry (never mind it's the same watch, ring and earrings every time!)

But utterly exhausting, too - I don't know how her teacher does it 5 days a week, 8 hours a day (they have all-day kindergarten.....)

On a more serious gardening note, Verdesign - my tomatoes have a purplish tinge to the lower half of their stem. Same problem as RiseAnn, or is it only when the leaves are affected do we have a phosphorous deficiency? I've got bonemeal, and can add it if needed, but I try to avoid adding such things unless I know they are necessary. Thanks!

Go_Vols,
We teachers have a secret stash of emergency chocolate to get us through some days... I teach all day Kindergarten too, from 8 to 2, with no nap time. I'm excited because next week we will begin our plant unit (which for me will probably last until the end of school!), and boy will we have fun (sticky, excited and MUDDY - and that's just me!) :)

OK, my tomatoes have that same twinge of purple... how much bonemeal do I need to add to a 3 by 3 pot to make them happy again?

Some varieties of tomatoes have a purplish tint on the UNDERSIDE of the leaves. it's normal. Campanula has a purple tint to the STEMS if it is a blue or pink color flower.

RiseAnn, no purple tint on my tomatoes either. Are your tomatoes planted in the ground already? I see you're in SD and it's pretty chilly up your way. If your tomatoes are in pots and have been repotted for at least 1 week, you can water them with a very weak liquid fertilizer. There are 3 causes for tomato leaves to have a purplish color:
1) Phosphorous deficiency
2) Cold damage
3) Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus

BTW, thanks RiseAnn! Now I've got that "Scooby, Scooby Doo where are you?" in my head!!! ROFL

Hi Terri :) The tomatoes are in yogurt containers in a 50/50 mix of soil-less seed starting medium and vermiculite. The purple is on the underside of the leaves only and on the stems. I have them in the basement under shop lights 18 hours at a constant 66 degrees. I transplanted them on the 22nd. Do I want to add the fertilizer after adding the bone meal? I am not really worried, just commenting on the striking purple hue. The plants look extremely healthy and happy.

Richmond Hill, GA(Zone 8b)

That temp should be fine, RiseAnn. I wouldn't call a constant temp of 66 degrees cold at all. I would also rule out TSWV. By process of elimination, that leaves us with a phosphorus deficiency. If you've already added the bone meal, I would not fertilize again for a while. Wait and see what happens next and then we can go from there. I suspect that everything will turn out just fine. In researching your problem, I found that this purplish tint is not an unsual occurrence. So, not to worry! :)
