PDB FYI

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm currently working with Dave on some upcoming enhancements to the Plants Database. As Dave works on the programming aspect of the changes, I'm working to clean up the database, and put the "spit and polish" on the botanical name pronunciation/definition key that Baa and Copperbaron have worked very hard to make complete.

Right now I could really use everyone's help - if you've added ANYTHING to the PDB, please take a moment to check your entry(ies):
-if you added any photos, make sure you added a caption with the cultivar/variety name;
-if you didn't add things like height, hardiness, etc. to an entry, please take a few minutes to do it;
-double check family, genus and species names (pretty, pretty please???)
-if time permits, see if there's anything else you can add to complete your entry (or any others, for that matter) like a general description, a list of cultivar names, etc.

(But DON'T add germination instructions to any entry, as we're changing the way we enter and display this info - see this thread for details: http://davesgarden.com/showthread/178676.html

If you browse the database over the next couple weeks, you may notice cultivar names being dropped - this is a long-overdue editing process. Cultivar/variety information should go in a text box within the entry. That also means some entries will be combined, and I'm using the general rule of "first in stays", so whichever entry was created first will stay, the duplicate entry information moved over, and the duplicate deleted.

The cleanup effort is huge - with over 2500 entries, the PDB now a considerable-sized repository of data, so I'm counting on everyone's help. If I email you with a request or question about one of your entries, please react and reply as soon as possible, so I can cross it off a long (and growing) list of to-do's. Many thanks in advance - with everyone pitching in, we will soon have an even better database to use and enjoy!

Stay tuned - more news to come...

Thanks for working so hard on this, Terry and friends. It's a wonderful thing.

When I saw your subject line it made me think of XYZPDQ. Anyone remember that one?

Go_Vols: 10-4! Lucky me, I haven't been here long enough to contribute much, so it's an easy do for me! I've used the data base a lot to get my own catalog of plants going, and I've noticed lots of holes in the information. I guess the only way to fill that in is with an additional entry. Is that ok at this point, or more work for you?...WZ PS: Your subject line made me think of PFD's (permanent fund dividends)-an Alaskan's pre-Christmas gift!

Wow...big job there for Dave and Vols ya'll...we better get on the stick. (yeh yeh, even me!) I've had to cut down my computer time recently but I'll try to help out at least one change/addition a day...surely I can take five minutes and put it into DG, eh?

Thanks, Shoe! Actually, if I could ask a huge favor of you, I'd love it if you could pop over to Gardenology and add a recipe or two for your world-famous compost tea, LOL. (Or add a definition for anything that catches your eye!) And anything you do with the Plants Database is MOST appreciated, too.

Whatever you do, do it PDQ or even ASAP, and I'll say TYVVM for helping me avoid a real FUBAR. (If you want to know what that means, ask anybody who's ever been in the U.S. military. Of course, we don't use the exact same terminology in our family, but it's the same basic premise, LOL.)

Go_Vols... Love what you are doing for all of us here at DG, and can never post enough heartfelt THANKS! I don't think I have known enough to contribute anything to the PlantDatabase. but will check, and correct.

(And, it was lovely to have a belly-laugh at FUBAR... I was in a military family, so I know FUBAR's and SNAFU, and many others that escape me at the moment!)

I just noticed in the Roses catagory that there are 2 listings for the John F Kenedy. One is mine should and can I just delete the entire entry? Since I am totally not sure my entries are done right I will be glad to delete or have deleted any you deem incorrect. :)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Zany, I'll take a look at it when I get to the roses category - generally speaking you can't delete an entry. But if there's another plant you'd like to add, you can edit your own entry to become something else - just let me know if you do that, so I won't be looking for two JFK's :)

Compost tea? Am I allowed freedom of speech? (Horseshoe-ism?) Not that I'd ever use it...when ya'll put me on the spot I tend to freeze. However, I'll take a visit over there and look around!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Okay Vols, DONE! I didn't know the rules of the place so may have entered too much wordiness (now would I do THAT!?).

Folks it was fun and EASY. Ya'll oughta give it a try!
