Laughed all the way home

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

After church today and driving back home heard the funniest radio show ever!! In fact of all the comedy I've seen on TV or heard on the radio, this has to be the most hilarious!! It was on public radio and normally from Minnesota but today the show was in New Orleans. I can't tell you what the show is or who was running it but I never stopped laughing and the music was great too. Does anybody know what I'm talking about!! It was airing about 12 noon I think - we were listening to it at 12.30!! I wonder if this is a regular Sunday slot or what!!!

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Louisa, I sure wish I could help you! With it being from New Orleans today sure has me wondering too!

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Lisa the show was only broadcast from New Orleans because it was Mardi Gras, so I assume it was recorded!! Normally it is aired from Minnesota!! I will check it out next Sunday and see if it comes on again!!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Could it have been a Garrison Keillor thing, where he talks about life in Lake Wobegon?

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes Aimee - you got it!!!!! How clever of you!! So am I right in assuming that it's one of the funniest things around???

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

A Prairie Home Companion - some people put their lives on hold once a week just to listen to it.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

I've never heard of him. I did seach and couldn't believe all the stuff I found on this guy. This link http://www.phc.mpr.org/ looks like you might be able to listen to his program on line. I will have to listen to it. Thanks Louisa for mentioning this!

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes Kathleen I can well imagine why!! Some of the material was a bit risque but I was not offended!! Thanks Lisa for the link. I just used it and have now bookmarked the site!!

Vicksburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Louisa, in case you're interested, Garrison has several books out about Lake Wobegon. I used to watch it all the time on PBS because he would have absolutely incredible musicians on that only a few folks had ever heard about.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

You watched it??? That must have been some treat!! I would imagine the library would stock the books then?? They must make hilarious reading. The music is so good and so I take it that these are amateurs!! Did you check out the site above - quite a bit on these musicians there!! Thanks for the info!!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Louisa -- You can get audiobooks of his books, plus they often have cassettes of his radio shows. He's one of our all-time favorites! We'd love to go to St. Paul and see the show live sometime. :-D

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Me too Kimberley - with you and me in the audience it would be a hoot!! I have quite a loud belly laugh!!!! I really would like the cassettes so will hunt them down!!

High Springs, FL(Zone 8b)

Louisa, try your local library for the Lake Woebegon radio broadcasts on audio cassette. In the past my family has enjoyed listening to them while traveling by car.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I had to comment here, though I seldom hit this forum. I have been a fan of Prairy Home Companion for many years. I have recorded many tapes of his programs and monologues about Lake Wobegon. He's a wonderful companion out in the greenhouse or out on the lawn as I work, since he's as welcome as each new blossom! He is broadcast here on Saturdays and repeated again on Sundays. One of his programs was recorded from Anchorage, Alaska, and as always, he poked fun at his hosts! Garrison Keillor has the gift of making us laugh at ourselves and others in a loving way. I'm so glad others think so!..WZ

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Ten-four on all the above! Garrison Keillor is a hero for me! (I seem to have found someone I identify with, finally!)
Every so often he does 'specials'...they are also a real hoot! (Just like his regular shows!) What is really cool folks is that lots of times he just makes some of those stories up just off the top of his head...now THAT'S entertainment, eh?
Thanks for the link,Lisa!

Tilton, NH(Zone 4a)

For the first few years of our marriage, my husband and I set aside an hour on Saturday night just to listen to Prarie Home Companion...if he were traveling or at work, I would listen, and it made him feel closer. We called it our date time, to listen together.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Linnea: What a wonderful idea, sharing a program together from miles away..laughing together at the funny parts, but miles away! I love it!...WZ

(Zone 5a)

This is my first time hearing about him but I will check it out and see what it's all about. I am going to check my local library and see if they have a copy and if not I will request it.
I just checked my library and low and behold they have the book, cd and the tape I couldn't believe my luck.

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

Louisa,
Yeah, and this is the main path to practise my English listening.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Well it must be working for you Jianhua - you speak it very well, or should I say write it very well :-)

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

My written english is not half bad(heheh licking boots of myself).regarding my spoken english,it's hard to say if i can stand in the crowd, for i have never spoken face to face with a native english speaker.:-)

Fall River, MA(Zone 6a)

NO NO NO! it was NOT garrison keillor that you were listening to! it was MICHAEL FELDMAN and the show is called WHADYA KNOW! (show usually from madison, wisconsin, though he does travel quite a bit around the country)

i agree that it is one of the best shows on radio! you can find it on weekends on most NPR radio stations (i listen to WBUR out of boston and it is on saturdays at 1 p.m.)

go michael feldman!

p.s. this american life is another really excellent radio program on npr stations :)

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm sorry but it is Keillor!! I would know that voice anywhere!! :-)

Windy what you were hearing was an interview reviewing his latest book - a type of semi-autobiography. Try this to get an idea of the guy's humour!!

With Garrison Keillor, it's necessary to listen. And you may have to listen for a few minutes for the full impact to hit you. He is a master at developing unexpected turns from the simplest thoughts or events. One tale that comes to mind had to do with a funeral procession through town, a young girl's wedding and an outhouse, and for the life of me, I can't see how he strung all of it together. But it did all come together perfectly, and was uproarishly funny. His understated style, just telling it like it wuz, makes it even better. I imagine he and Shoe have a lot in common when it comes to style.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

I HEARD THAT!! :>)

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Bingo! Now I know at least one time I got his attention! Don't tell Laura.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Careful what you say Aimee or he'll start calling you names :-)

Fall River, MA(Zone 6a)

lol ... well i guess you'd know :)

but michael feldman IS the funniest man on radio! rah michael feldman!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Louisa, you mean Shoe will call me names? Would he? How can I get him to do that?

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

karen I'll have to watch out for your 'funny' man!! Aimee I'm sure he will come up with a name for you. He calls me Weezy or is it Weeza!! :-)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Oh my, don't get me started. You want a name, eh? Better just stick with aimee. Course now, there's Brainy Aimee. Or should it be Aimless aimee. Or maybe Able Aimee...naw, that one is too close to Abel, a pet cockroach I once had, and the memory makes me sad. I put his leash on him one day and took him for a walk to the fishin' pier...first time I turned my back he attempted to jump in the water. There he was, hangin' by his little skinny neck from that leash when all of a sudden a pelican swooped down and swallowed him. I had to let go of the leash. For yrs everyone around would point fingers at "Pete" the pelican cause that leash was always hanging out between his lips. When I got older tho I snuck up to Pete one nite, snatched that leash, pulled super hard and heard a sound like a champagne bottle go 'pop!'!. Lo and behold, on the end of that leash lived Abel! We were re-united! I couldn't believe it! Abel had lived in the pouch of a pelican named Pete a purty long period of time! (I love saying that last sentence...makes my lips tickle!) Anyway, for shame for shame, Abel was different, like he hardly knew me anymore. Abel wasn't able. I understood tho and took his leash off and gave him his freedom...he immediately headed back to the pelican, Pete. When he got close, Pete bent down and snatched him up like he was sardine...and all I heard was a mighty GULP! Yep, Pete had finally swallowed Abel all the way down this time. Yep, Pete had finally gotten that tickle out of his throat after all those yrs! As for me...the way I figger it...if you're able, be able. If you're Abel, be careful. And if your Aimee, you'll just hafta wait till I work my way farther down the dikshunary for a better name for ya! K?
