In case you haven't heard, we have a new feature to ready to debut, and (thanks to Sis), it has a catchy name.
WHAT IS GARDENOLOGY?
Currently it's a list of about 1,000 gardening terms, with about 10% of them already defined.
WHAT WILL GARDENOLOGY BE?
The ultimate garden knowledge base - when we all work together. Unlike most glossaries, which were created by a few people, Gardenology is for gardeners...BY gardeners. And that's where YOU come in. Most of the terms are not yet defined, and everyone's input is absolutely necessary.
For example, WHAT is compost tea? Do you have special way you make it? (I know for a fact that Horseshoe has some good "recipes" for his tea.) If we have a dozen recipes for compost tea, that's 12 times more helpful than having only one! If you have a different definition than what someone else contributed - PLEASE add yours. That's what will make Gardenology different (and BETTER) than any other glossary available.
WHAT IS GARDENOLOGY NOT?
Well, it's not a repository for botanical nomenclature. Latin plant names and their definitions will soon be appearing in the Plants Database. Just about anything else is fair game.
HOW CAN I FIND IT?
Any time a gardening term from our list appears in the forum, it will be automatically converted to a hyperlink over to its entry in the database. Additionally, you can get to it from the "DG Network" box, under the logo. You may find terms by alphabetical listing, or by searching.
A Big Thank You to go_vols for driving this thing. She gave me all the data and told me what features she wanted. Thanks to her work, I was able to put this feature together in record time - I started it yesterday afternoon and finished it last night! Thanks vols!
So....let the games begin!
Dave
Announcing... Gardenology!
Thanks for yet another feature to make me NEVER be able to leave this place LOL
What a great name! I think it should be copyrighted if it isn't already.
Yes Terry,THANK YOU' Your hard work is sooo appreciated here by all of us'
I feel so "HONORED" to be a part of your garden Dave/Trish and was to say the least, thrilled to contribute something as helpful and necessary for expanding the adventure of gardening for everyone here' This is the BEST EARLY BIRTHDAY PRESENT, I've ever experienced, thank you' Sis'
You go...GoVols!!
"eyes"
Good one, eyes. Indeed, our family often cheers "gooooooo VOLS!" (Of course, they aren't cheering "yours truly" but our favorite team :)
Sis, thanks again for a very clever name. You saved us from the "safe" route, and calling it a garden (gardening, gardener's) glossary.
Okay, now we REALLY need everyone's participation! Please go browse around the terms, find some you are familiar with, and post - in your own words - your definition, tips, advice, or plain old opinion.
Do you want to know the difference between all of us "regular folks" and the so-called experts? Somewhere along the line, somebody decided they were an expert :)
Even a one-line description is fantastic. When you go look at an entry that has no definition, just give it a line or two, in your own words, what that word means to you.
It's quick, it's easy, and it should be the law. :)
Dave
Love it!!!!! What will you guy's think of next??????? Another job well done to all of you!!!!!
sue
I'm glad ya smiled when ya said that, Dave! :o)
"eyes"
Oh this is so cool Dave...Thank you SO much!!! vic
So that's what all those blue words are! I thought I'd messed something up again.
Thanks Dave
It's pretty funny to see "bed" in the Goldville thread, a link. This could make for some comic relief real often.
LOL, wish I has read this thread before i posted a definition of "tender" from a recipe! I suspect 'tender' may mean an entirely different thing in a garden vocabulary vs. a cooking vocabulary.
hehehe, Darius. Well, if you look up the term family you'll find that Dave hasn't necessarily stuck with garden definitions, either. A few of those sprinkled in should be entertaining.
I can't believe no-one got to define garden before I did! ;)
Linnea, we were saving it just for you :)
Seriously, you guys (and gals) are GREAT! I was away from my desk for a while, came back and found the definitions POURING in - most serious, some funny. This is wonderful! I hope you know how helpful this wil be to new gardeners - it's a breath of fresh air in a technical, boring and sometimes "uppity" arena.
If anyone is scared to contribute because it might not sound "professional" well - just take a look at the current set of definitions for family LOL.
And we definitely need some "shoe-isms" in there. I do believe he described capillary action to us awhile back. Of course the context was a bit different, but still it was Gardenology material for sure. :0) Thanks for all those terrific definitions - keep 'em coming!
(It IS kind of fun, isn't it???)
This is super! I just added a definition for sport. I cited the dictionary I got its formal definition from. Is it necessary to cite the reference? Are such things copyrighted material, too?
Kimberly, if you've tweaked it to be in your own words, you don't have to cite it, IMO. Some definitions are so standardized, I'm not sure who you could cite as the "original author".
Dave
How can I add additionl terms?
Paul
Dave, this is habit forming. I added 'penduncle" but capitalized the first letter, can you fix it for me?
I'm not Dave, but:
Paulgrow, if you scroll down the page of Gardenology, past the search box, you'll find a link to "add a term".
Cala, I already fixed peduncle for you :)
Thanks
Yes it is habit forming. I was surprised by how many I really do know. Terry are you watching the ballgame.
Mystic, WHAT ballgame, LOL. It's on in the next room. I'm not a big fan of TV ball. But DH is always in the mood to watch :)
Just figured since Ky was playing TN you might be watching it. lol Heather told me to ask you since she wanted to know what your name meant the other night. lol
Oh goodness - habit and fan are showing up as hyperlinks now. Hmmmm. Well, we'll see how this goes. I *think* it's a good idea, since sometimes you read a post, and wonder what in the world a person is talking about. With any luck, you can click on the term, and go right to the definition(s).
Ok, I have to reign my strange sense of humor in, but I love being able to use that trivial part of my brain that dispenses these bits of information, usually to people who didn't want to know in the first place *sigh* it's hard to be a botanist wanna-be. But at least now I know they'll be appreciated.
Vols, is "obsession" on the list?
Now you're getting a glimpse into the frenzy that drove me to create that list of terms. The more I found, the more I wanted to find :)
I'm just tickled pink with the response so far. I hope everybody here adds at least one definition, tip or technique. That's what will make it most meaningful to all who use it.
By the way, you may notice that your definition gets slightly tweaked. It's likely me doing it; I'm trying to make sure as many terms as possible are cross-referenced to each other.
That can require removing punctuation or changing things around a bit. I'm trying to never lose the original meaning of your definitions; but if you don't like my modifications, email me and I'll be glad to work with you to restore it.
I want to recognize paulgrow, sugar_fl, Greenwood, Calalily, Mystic, Jody, Sis, Linnea, Mikepiper, Dave and the others who have contributed hundreds of definitions to Gardenology already!
Now EVERYBODY knows SOME gardening terms. About 40% of the terms have been defined, so there are still a lot of terms that are "up for grabs"
That goes double for our international members - adding your definitions of these terms - and the terms that are familiar to you - will be deeply appreciated by the rest of us.
Caution: working on Gardenology can be addictive - just ask some of those mentioned above. You think you're just going to define a term or two, and they go so fast, you suddenly realize you've defined a baker's dozen. Or two ;0)
