Please read: "If your wallet is stolen (not a joke)"
Awesome tip! I'd known to have the phone and CC numbers on hand just in case, but didn't even think about calling the credit reporting companies. Thank you, Crimson!
Crimson, Thanks for the info, I always plan to be careful, but never get the information down, where I can do something about it. I live in Middleton and was watching the news where several people had their " identities" stolen and are now having similiar problems--looks like someone sold the company's employee records list.
Thanks for the suggestion. Another tip - before throwing anything away, shred anything that has any pertinent info on (address, ss#, birth date, etc.) I've even heard where people steal those credit card applications that you receive in the mail and resubmit with a different address on them. Several weeks ago, there was a bit on our local news where a cleaning woman stole a credit card from someone and then called the credit card company posing as the woman she stole from and requested a new credit card with a new address. She wracked up $40,000 in cash advances, etc. before getting caught. Sometime I will have to tell you all about our "new friendly neighbor" who stole check blanks when she went into houses to use the bathroom.
That is great info!
Another thing that my credit union suggests is to get a copy of your credit report from the credit reporting companys on a regular basis. Not only will you find out if someone is trying to get credit in your name but also if any info on these reports is incorrect.
Something else I do to help protect myself. Since I don't use my credit cards on a day to day basis, I have a second wallet that contains my credit cards, ss card and other things I would not like to fall into the wrong hands. I do not carry it unless I need it. It stays hidden in a secure place at my house. That way if my wallet is snatched or I lose it, there are less problems. All they get is my drivers license and a few dollers. That was another thing the credit union suggested.
GOOD good advice.
Thanks... a good HEAD'S UP for all of us!
