Sleepwalking Scare

Harford County, MD(Zone 6b)

If any of you have children that sleepwalk occasionally, please take precautions...In the middle of the night my daughters alarm system went off.She went flying downstairs to turn it off,(which, had it been a breakin she could have been in danger),however, she did see that the door had been opened. She heard crying from the direction of the family room and looked over to see her 6 year old son OUTSIDE trying to get in the patio door. He had walked out the kitchen door, through the garage and around the house.SCAREY to say the least...Her husband went right out and bought chain locks to put at the tops of all the doors.
Michael has never done any sleepwalking other than from one bedroom to the next and hasn't even done that in a year.
They both agree that the alarm system was worth every penny

Gin sounds like it was good they had the alarm system. I used to sleepwalk as a child my parents would always find me at the doors or a big picture window trying to get out. I never got out of course but thats where I always ended up. The chain locks are a good idea. So glad he was unharmed.

Oh, what memories! I once walked several miles through a dark wooded area, to the home of a neighbor. Crawled into bed with some of the kids and had no idea why I was there in the morning. We were very country, had no phone within miles, but one of the older girls took me home. It must have been summer, because I don't recall going to school that day. I was punished! But it did no good, I often found myself outside in the middle of the night. Lots of funny stories there, some scary ones. My grandmother despised me, and she said it was because I was the devil. Didn't fool me, though, I knew I wasn't bad and figured it was my little secret escape from a negative setting to a positive one. You who were trying to get back in were probably just playing and sort of woke up. If I had ever awakened out of bed, I would have probably panicked.

My goodness Aimee,it's a good thing you didn't wake up while in the woods. You would have been terrified. My grandson never woke up either and the next day, when they told him what happened,he said.."stop talking about it,you're scaring me"(he's afraid of the dark)I read that it's quite common for children ages 4-12 to sleepwalk occasionally.

ginlyn, as a child, I had no idea there was anything in the woods that would harm me! But take me to town, and I had anxiety attacks. I would have probably worried about being in trouble if I was caught.

I just had my first sleepwalking experience a few months ago. My husband found me rustling through some stuff in the closet and then I got up and started for the bedroom door when I suddenly turned around and went back to bed. I don't remember much about it. I thought it was a dream. Weird.

I don't as much anymore, but my husband found me standing naked in the driveway in 2 feet of snow in the middle of the night, and I was telling people to get away from my house. Crazy mind works overtime!

We don't know if it was sleepwalking, but about twelve years ago my then nine-year old autistic sister walked a mile down our drive to the Alaska Highway and back again in the middle of the night. None of us knew about it until morning, when my mom found mud on her bare feet (she had come back into her own bed) and we followed her tracks to see where she had been. Talk about terrified. My mom lacked the door at night after that.

My youngest son sleepwalks and I did as a child as well. I used my fathers cheap yet easy trick to keep him in when he was little which was sliding a butter knife between the doorframe and the door. It created just enough pressure to stop myself and him from leaving the house.
It doesn't work when they get older though. Robbie got out once when he was 11 and in his confusion when he woke up on the street, and went to the wrong house to get in. It was quite scarey for us all.
I grew out of my sleep walking and I'm hoipng he will too. It's been almost a year without and incident. He is 15 now.

I've been sleepwalking since I was little. Two years ago I walked out onto my patio and was looking at my pond. The cold air woke me up. "T" :)

OMG-I thought I was alone. My 8yr old gets up and runs through the house yelling-he doesnt remember it! One night I heard him doing this again, except this time I heard the 2 doors to outside open-So i got up and went to the doors-he was nowhere in sight. I called to him 3 times till he came back out of the shadows over by the dog house. As he came back in he had a very funny look about him and he went by me and to the couch and layed down-usually hes frightened to sleep alone, so I went to crawl in next to him. I told him to move his arm so I could get semi-comfy,,,there was no response he was out like a light. The next morning my DH found my teenagers car door open!!! I cant even think about what could have happened.
Now I see that he may never grow out of this-YIKES!
Haighr-you poor poor thing!!!
My heart goes out to all of you!
Amieethats scary foryour parents to wake up and find you gone!!!! Devestating!!!!

I sleep walked till I was in my 20's but haven't in a long time. My daughter is 11 and sleepwalks and also will sit up and talk to you. We have used the butterknife trick to keep her inside too, as well as locking the storm doors. Wally our dog usually comes and gets me if she is up walking around now. He's a good doggie.

Well. I don't sleepwalk anymore, but still 'talk' in my sleep. I'm told that, if someone speaks to me, I make what sound like perfectly awake sounding sentences, except that they usuallly make no sense. I did sleepwalk as a child, just not out of the house...

Y'all take care of those sleepwalkin' chillruns, y'hear?

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

There's going to be a special on-dont know when. Its on date line or one of those shows. Its about sleepwalkers that have KILLED in their sleep! YIKES!!!
One girl killed her mom! I want to watch it-anyone else know when its on???

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)
