I cant stop laughing!
I saw this once on a movie called ground hog day... Ithought it was just a movie!
can anyone enlighten this dumb old aussie???
what is the story behind it and do they really do that??
punxsatawney phil is real???!!!! Oh My!
Here's a supposed scientific explanation behind the groundhog phenomenon:
In the northeast part of the U.S. prevailing winter winds are from the north, and clouds tend to be high - lots of bright sunlight (in which one would see one's shadow.)
Around mid-winter (early February), the weather patterns start to change and the winds come from the south, which also brings more rain and lower-hanging cloud cover (in which one does not see one's shadow.)
As long as the prevailing winds are still coming out of the north, high clouds means bright sunshine, shadows and continued cold north winds.
But if the winds have already shifted to come from the south, it generally means warmer weather, rain and more chance of overcast days.
P.S. according to one "official" Groundhog source, Phil sees his shadow 90% of the time. Bummer.
Sis,
I live about 45 minutes away from Punxsutawney, and yes, Phil is real! I posted this over in the voting forum, but will repost here:
"Punxsutawney is a Lenni Lenape/Delaware indian word which means "town of the sandflies."(I'm not kidding!) It is very near to Kittanning, which means "place by the great river." Alot of things around here in Western PA also end in "mahoning" which is Delaware for "at the licks," i.e. Sinnemahoning means "at the stony licks."
The legend of the groundhog seeing it's shadow on Candlemas Day is a German legend. It was first officially celebrated in Punxsutawney in 1886, and has been blown WAY out of proportion by the movie "Groundhog Day" starring Bill Murray and Andie McDowell.
If you ever get to Punxsy, you can see Punxsutawney Phil for yourself. He lives in the local public library in a climate controlled burrow. :-)"
Sis,
I saw it. I just thought it would be easier for the folks to find it if I reposted it here.
No big deal.
Yeah-- I don't know why I typed your name at the beginning.
I guess I really need to call it a day--It's been a LOOOONG one. (One of my girls is sick.)
Sorry for the confusion (which was wholly and entirely mine.) :-)
well I'll be jiggered on both sides!
Wonder, we even have a southern groundhog, and sometimes the Phil sees his shadow and General Lee doesn't :) They give Phil about 5 seconds on the news down here, and General Lee 5 or 10 minutes:)
oh my!!!!
Yep, he's real. I just found a site with Groundhog ecards on it and sent one to a friend.
General Lee has only been wrong once in 12 years. Phil saw his shadow 6 more weeks of winter, General Lee DID NOT!!!!!! yippee, early spring!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy Pork Sausage Day!
If the Pork Sausage sees his shadow we will have 6 1/2 more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow we will have 6 1/2 more weeks of winter.
other nonsense:
If you put salt on a wild birds tail it cannot fly. If it could fly you will never get close enough.
HI, Our local expert- Sun Prairie "Jimmy" says it is an early spring also. The other spring pronosticator (?) (no ID remembered) pot bellied pig from Cottage Grove (WI) also is saying early spring.
My Gas bill says it better be an early spring!!!!!
Wonder............here's a link to the famous groundhog festivities. The crowd was estimated at 15,000 yesterday.
