Virus alert

Memphis, TN

I have posted this in the computer form also.
I just got a email from
graywolf@aptus.....
Title:New photo from my party
There was no attachment, nor did I have to click on the email for it to attempt to get in. My Nortons caught it and unable to repair. I quarn. and deleted it.
Just a heads up. If you are not running a virus protection you can get this without knowing it.

I got it as well about an hour ago from graywolf1@aptushome.com... I don't know who this is but I was aware that the virus was out there already and deleted it.. I would like to let the person who is infected know they have it... does anyone know who that is?

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Macafee has it as number one on this weeks virus list if anyone would like information about it.

optushome.com is an Austrailian provider... does this ring a bell for anyone?

Thank you'

I know who it is and I wrote to the address and gave them links to sites which have info and removal instructions for the w32.myparty@mm virus, which is what this is. You do not have to wipe your entire system clean if you get this - containment is simple, and Norton will do it for you if you run a full system scan. Make sure your antivirus is updated...This was added to Norton's database on January 26 and they did some updates today, I believe.

The file attached had a .com extension, which the e-mail refers to as an attached website. I bet this will fool many people with that wording and that file extension. Buggers.

No worries,... it happens all the time. Part of the communications age we are all used to and should be prepared for but they get through every now and then :)

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Uh-oh, as if I don't have enough problems with the computer. That e-mail is in my inbox right now, so I guess Norton didn't catch it. If you don't see me here, it will be because I'm trying to clean up whatever it leaves.

Pegasus Mail can be found at pmail.com - http://www.pmail.com

It will not allow a program to execute automatically inside of an e-mail like Outlook and Outlook Express will allow. You cannot run any program file manually from within Pegasus, either. You have to save it to your hard drive first. I know that Norton, at least, scans as you save attachments and will alert you at that point (providing it's not so new the antivirus companies don't have updates for it yet).

Pegasus will allow you to view safe files (such as .jpg, .gif and .bmp) in its own viewer. But it is written to exclude anything which actually executes a program and puts you at risk.

Never open attachments which you get from people you don't know.

The my Party virus is from Russia and it won't infect pc's in Russia!
It infects you pc if you have Windows 2000, NT, and XP. I've got 2000, great.. :/

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Even if you do know the person - don't open attachments without updating your a/v and scanning the bejeebers out of 'em. And be sure you have your e-mail set up to show the complete file names of attachments (show extensions). For example, some viruses attach files named things like

kitty.jpg.scr (.scr is the extension)

and the e-mail program only shows the kitty.jpg because it's not set to show the file extensions. So the person thinks it is just a harmless picture file and opens it. Look in your e-mail's documentation for how to show file extensions. You should have Windows set up to do the same.

Antrim, Northern Ire, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

and it doesnt infect pcs that have the wrong date. it only affects those dated 25 -29 January. I changed my date to Jan 1st.
